Nykterhet och Kollektiv Identitet. : Kollektiv identitet inom Nykterhetsorganisationen Verdandi (NOV) i bruksorten Hällefors. (1927-1942) / Temperance and Collective Identity. : Collective identity within temperance organization Verdandi (NOV) in the industrial town of Hällefors. (1927-1942)

Lund, Tommy January 2017 (has links)
All social movements have their starting sometimes in the 1700s, but as with the temperance pledge, movements, and especially the temperance movement take off in the 1800s. The temperance organizations initially advocated for moderate use of alcohol, but at the late 1800s all of them had adopted temperance. Initially the temperance movements were branded by pious ideals from religion, but a crisis within IOGT in the late 1800s would result in the birth of Verdandi, non-religious but socialistic in core, with strong links to the labor movement. The study’s purpose was to examine the association 1363 Frihet of NOV in order to recall what constituted the collective identity within. This has been done through a qualitative study with an inductive method where I have collected, analyzed and interpreted the material on my own that I’ve judged to be appropriate to describe the collective identity within the association. In reality, the collective identity is something larger than the individual association, so in my study I’ve focused on key concepts that describe this. Solidarity and its expression, but also the principle of “Us and Them”. The association have shown to be an active one in the years of my study, lovable by members and well-liked in the industrial town of Hällefors. They took care of their members, discussed vividly about their goals, formed study groups and started events that the members and general public could attend.

Prohibice v ruských zemích a Spojených státech amerických / PROHIBITION IN RUSSIAN COUNTRIES AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Mikláš, Martin January 2013 (has links)
In this thesis deals with the issue of prohibition of alcohol. At the beginning of the work are discussed theoretical approaches to the prohibition of alcohol across the major authors of the economic community . Then I deal with the prohibitive measures in several countries. In these two examples, a detailed study of the causes , course and consequences of prohibitive measures are implemented . For example serves two major experiments in this area , is the first of Prohibition in the United States of America (USA) , second prohibition is almost unknown in Tsarist Russia, respectively . in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics ( USSR). At work I have carried out a detailed study of the causes of prohibition in relation to the U.S. when I consider the prohibition of the years 1920-1933 for determining the direction of the legislative creation of Americans that influences the legislative power to this day. In the case of Prohibition in Russian countries I concentrated course , because unlike Prohibition in the U.S. was an administrative directive measures. In my work, I have proved that prohibitive measures nationwide scope of the pre- reliant to fail if they are not accepted by the general public . Under other circumstances, lead to circumvention of the law and the growth of crime. I am also on the basis of the findings refute the commonly accepted view that the prohibition in the USA in the years 1920-1933 was an absolute failure. The failure was undoubtedly related to the political point of view , however, if one takes into account the health impact on society, according to statistics reported for 1933. Prohibition changed the culture of the society as alcohol consumption , when the company moved from the bars and streets of privacy. Repeal of Prohibition was a logical step in the new circumstances on the 1930s

Nykterhetsrörelsens visuella kommunikation : En semiotisk studie av bild- och symbolspråket hos fanor och standar tillhörande Independent Order of Good Templars och Svenska Blåbandsföreningen / The Visual Communication of the Temperance Movement : A semiotic study of the visual and symbolic language of banners and standards belonging to the Independent Order of Good Templars and the Swedish Blue-Ribbon Movement

Samor, Alice January 2023 (has links)
This essay aims to investigate the visual and symbolic language of banners and standards belonging to two Swedish temperance organizations, the Independent Order of Good Templars, and the Swedish Blue-Ribbon Movement. The examined material is 98 banners and standards from Folkrörelsearkivet för Uppsala län. Mieke Bal and Norman Bryson's semiotic starting point in the article "Semiotics and Art History" (1991), mainly based on Charles Sanders Peirce's semiosis, has been used as the method of analysis. Support has also been taken from Roland Barthes' semiotic concepts of denotation and connotation. Visual culture studies, with support from Nicolas Mirzoeff's Introduction to Visual Culture (1999) has been used as a theoretical and structural starting point of the essay. The analysis has shown a rich use of symbolic signs within the material, and that – and how – the use of said symbolic signs is both similar and different between the organizations. The analysis has further demonstrated the possibility to interpret meaning which were communicated through the banners and the standards visual and symbolic language. In the essay's discussion, these meanings have been divided into different themes which can be said to reflect the ideals, ideas, and activities of the organizations. The visual communication is understood based on the activities and religious history of the organizations, and on the political, social, historical, and cultural context of the collective symbols.

Nykterhetsrörelsen i Bohuslän : En studie av storstrejken 1909 års praktik vid nykterhetslogen nr 73 Vikingen i Uddevalla. / The temperance movement in Bohuslän : A study of the practice of the general stike of 1909 at the temperance lodge No.73 Vikingen in Uddevalla.

Jansson, Alice January 2023 (has links)

'Women's sphere' and religious activity in America, 1800-1860 : dynamic negotiation of reality and meaning in a time of cultural distortion

Newby, Alison Michelle January 1992 (has links)
The thesis uses the case study of the experience of middle-class northern white women in America during the period 1800-1860 to explore several issues of wider significance. Firstly, the research focuses upon the dynamic relationships between the culturally-constructed categories of public/formal and private/informal power and participation at both the practical and symbolic levels, suggesting ways in which they intersected on the lives of women. Secondly, consideration is given to the validity of the stereotyped view that 'domestic' women were necessarily disadvantaged and dominated relative to those who aspired to public political and economic roles. Thirdly, the relationship of religious belief to these two areas is discussed, in order to discover its relevance to the way in which women both perceived themselves and were perceived by others. In seeking to explore these issues, the research has analysed the patterns of social and cultural change in the era under question, indicating how those changes influenced the perceptions and experiences of both women and men. Their reactions in terms of discourse and activity are located as strategies of negotiation in redefining both social role and participation for the sexes. The rhetoric of 'separate spheres', which was used by men and women to order their mental and physical surroundings, is reduced to its symbolic constituents in order to illustrate that the distinction between male and female arenas was more perceptual than actual. The motivating forces behind the activities and ideas of women themselves are investigated to determine the role of religion in the construction of both female self-images and wider negotiational strategies. The context of nineteenth-century social dynamics has been revealed by detailed analysis of extensive primary sources originated by both women and men for private as well as public consumption. Feminist tools of analysis which enable the conceptualisation of 'meaningful discourse' as including female contributions have further enhanced the specific focus on how women constructed their own world-views and approaches to reality. 'Traditional' approaches and tools are shown to have seriously skewed and misrepresented the reality and variety of both discourse and female experience in the era. Great efforts have been made to allow women to speak in their own words. This has produced an insight into a richness of female social participation and discourse which would otherwise be obscured. The research indicates that women were indeed actors and negotiators during the period. Those women who advocated as primary the duties of women in the domestic and social arenas were by no means setting narrow limitations on female participation in both society and discourse. The religious impulses and eschatological frameworks derived by women (varied as they were) served to order and renegotiate reality and meaning, whilst they produced female roles and influence of great significance. Women were not passive victims of male oppression. Religion can thus be perceived as a positive force which women were able to approach both for its own sake, and for their own particular ends.
