Study of Strategies for Urban Aesthetics and Urban Marketing with The Case of Kaohsiung City

Chuang, Chi-chang 02 September 2009 (has links)
Under globalized competition, the traditional meaning of space has been demolished and re-defined. The boundaries of countries have been blurred by the absence of time difference and a global movement that re-defines territory based on information, knowledge, acceptance and economy has begun. The global society moves towards the trend of ¡§urban orientation¡¨. ¡§Urban marketing¡¨ has growing importance as it affects the development capacity and life quality of its habitants. Local government actively promotes urban marketing in an attempt to raise the competitiveness of its city: promote local attractions, allow urban re-construction, and revitalize urban development. The process of urban renewal in the creation of a new city image is related to its urban competitiveness, and its adaptability relies upon innovative thinking and applicable strategies of urban development. The key to whether a city can rise among the ranks is that it can create a unique and irreplaceable urban value. This value will depend on the urban marketing ideal of its decision-makers and the urban positioning strategy under the guidance of this ideal. In the view of the function of ¡§Urban Aesthetics¡¨ in ¡§Urban Marketing¡¨, research is conducted on how local government utilizes ¡§Urban Aesthetics¡¨ and their gain and loss in the renewal process. The successful experience of Kaohsiung in utilizing ¡§Urban Aesthetics¡¨ sets an example for other counties to model. This is the research motivation of this undertaking. This research adopts the literature review methodology to investigate the concept and development background and different phases of urban marketing, and further classifies the different types of urban marketing, that is, its classification and product contents. From the perspective of individual case experience, the structure of urban marketing is analyzed to provide reference for future promotion and individualized marketing strategy. This research adopts in-depth interviews on direct participants and decision-makers of Kaohsiung City urban marketing. The first-hand materials gained from these interviews add value to this research.

Investigating the intersection of urban agriculture and urban planning concerning urban governance and elements in Victoria, Canada

Ghezeljeh, Abdolzaher 06 May 2020 (has links)
The world is home to predominantly urbanized populations that continue to grow. In an increasingly urbanized world, cities suffer from various challenges, including urban poverty and food insecurity, which result in unsustainability, health concerns, and crime increase. Many reasons affect urban poverty, including controversial government policies, an imbalance between existing resources and demands, and inefficient urban management and planning. Integrating urban agriculture (UA) into development policies can alleviate urban poverty and food insecurity in cities. Therefore, a line of research seems necessary to gain a better understanding of various ways to boost food production and improve sustainability in cities. To this end, the present study attempts to investigate the role of urban planning and governance in community gardens in Victoria to examine how urban planning and governance can support food production. A qualitative research method with semi-structured interviews and community mapping workshops were used within three groups of governmental, non-governmental, and residential actors in Victoria, Canada. Eighteen participants were interviewed, and eight participants took part in workshops held in the James Bay and Fernwood neighbourhoods. The three proposed research questions in this study were analyzed by thematic analysis using NVivo 10 software. The findings revealed that nine themes should be considered to improve food production in Victoria. The themes include improving UA economic efficiency, increasing awareness, gaining community satisfaction, effective landuse policies, productive partnership, improving the long bureaucratic procedure, offering grants, providing resources and facilities for gardeners, and changes in existing zoning bylaws. In addition, the findings of the workshops show that the City of Victoria plays the most crucial role in UA projects. Study results reveal that the compost education center, residents, and community centres should create an active partnership with the City towards improving community gardens. / Graduate

Thermal Variation and the Built Environment of Jackson, Mississippi

Crank, Peter Jay 12 August 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Urbanization and a changing climate have encouraged more discussion as to how the urban heat island affects humans and society. This research examines three temperature variables (air temperature, apparent temperature, and surface skin temperature) across the Jackson, Mississippi metropolitan area to determine if intra-city thermal variability in select neighborhoods and business districts is connected to the built environment of each location. Using hand-held observation equipment, official weather observations from nearby airports, and land cover data from the United States Geological Survey, this research suggests that the built environment is contributing to the thermal variability around the city; however, the fine scale variations require closer investigation of the built environment around them to confirm or deny their role in the variations. Some sustainable urban design recommendations such as street shading and increasing the tree canopy are included for select areas throughout the Jackson Metro (Lakeland Drive, the Governor’s Mansion, etc.).
