Eletrodifusão, absorção óptica e termoluminescência no quartzo e berilo / Electrodiffusion, optical absorption and thermoluminescence of quartz and beryl

Keizo Yukimitu 16 December 1993 (has links)
+] no berilo. / A system of electrodiffusion was made in the laboratory to investigate effects of exchanging alkali ions, usually present in the structural channels by protons, in the optical and thermoluminescent properties of quartz. In the initial part of heating, the sweeping current presents a peak at about 350 GRAUS C. The analysis of the behaviour of this peak with additional data of optical absorption in the region of infrared, it was concluded that the peak at 350 GRAUS C of the current is due to [AL POT. 3+/M POT. +] system. Thermoluminescence and optical absorption spectra in the visible and ultraviolet light region for swept and unswept quartz were compared. Based on this comparison it was shown that, once irradiated to gama- or X-rays, alkali ions are removed from [AL POT. 3+/ M POT. +] and either couple to o ions or capture electron and become interstitial alkali atom, leaving, further, [ALO IND. 4] POT. 0 hole center. Heating at about 300 GRAUS C electrons from M POT 0 or M POT +O POT recombine with holes in [ALO IND. 4] POT. 0, emitting TL light, besides regrouping Al POT. 3+ and M POT. + to reform [Al POT. 3+/M POT. +] system by coulomb attraction. The electrodiffusion experiment was extended to beryl crystal, because beryl has also structural channels. To explain initial sweeping current behaviour as well as thermoluminescent property a mechanism involving [FE POT. 3+/M POT. +] system is proposed.

Mechanisms of luminescence in α-Al₂O₃:C : investigations using time-resolved optical stimulation and thermoluminescence techniques

Nyirenda, Angel Newton January 2013 (has links)
Carbon-doped aluminium oxide, α-Al₂O₃:C, is a ultra-sensitive dosimeter of topical research interest. The aim of this project was to investigate the dynamics of luminesce in this material. The methods of investigation consisted of thermoluminescence and time-resolved optical stimulation. Thermoluminescence measurements provide information on trap distribution and kinetic parameters of the traps involved in luminescence whereas time-resolved optical stimulation is a handy technique in investigation of luminescence lifetimes and provides an insight into the charge transitions between traps and recombination centres. Measurements were made on samples annealed at a nominal temperature of 900⁰C for 15 minutes. The material shows the presence of five thermoluminescence peaks at 37⁰C, 160⁰C, 300⁰C 410⁰C, and 480⁰C at a heating rate of 0.03k/s when irradiated to 6.0 Gy of beta. The main peak at 160⁰C, shows a linear dose response for doses between 0.1 Gy and 10 Gy and then goes sublinear above 10 Gy, the peak at 37⁰C shows a sublinear dose response for doses between 0.1 Gy and 10 Gy and appears to saturate thereafter, whereas the dose response of the peak at 300⁰C goes from linear to supralinear then apparently quadratic behaviour in the dose range of 0.1 Gy to 16.0 Gy. The trap depth of the main peak, that is, its activation energy as determined below the conduction band, has been approximated at 1.3 eV with a kinetic order of approximately 1.2. Time-resolved optical stimulation has been used to investigate luminescence lifetimes. The mean luminescence lifetime obtained for the sample at ambient temperatures is 35.0±1.0 ms. The investigations of the dependence of luminescence lifetimes on measurement temperature show that the material suffers from thermal quenching effects at measurement temperatures above 140⁰C with the activation energy of thermal quenching estimated at 1.045±0.002 eV. Shallow traps i.e. traps lying close to the conduction band, seem to elongate the lifetimes of optically stimulated luminescence in the material at temperatures between 30⁰C - 80⁰C due to charge retrapping. The material exhibits both fading and recuperation of the optically stimulated luminescence signal with storage time.

Étude des effets mémoire dans les matériaux scintillateurs / Study of memory effects in scintillating materials

Patton, Gaël 17 September 2015 (has links)
The interest of scintillating materials is the conversion of high energy radiations (γ or α particles, electrons, ...) in low energy photons detectable by usual photo-detectors. They are used in many applications : research in high energy physics, gamma spectrometry for research or radiation protection, medical and technical X-ray imaging, as well as for homeland security. The scintillation properties of this materials is dependent on the history of irradiation. This behavior, called memory effect, directly affects the performance of instruments using these materials. Three different memory effects can be distinguished : aging is a decrease in the scintillation yield after an absorption of ionizing radiation, the afterglow is the persistence of light emission after excitation, and finally radio-sensitization which is an increase of scintillation yield depending on the dose absorbed by the scintillator. This work mainly focus on the understanding of radio-sensitization phenomenon and afterglow in the scintillators. A model material, Y PO4 : Ce,Nd, was used to highlight the correlation between charges carrier traps present in the material and memory effects. Once this link is highlighted, a study of a commercial material widely used in many applications, thallium doped cesium iodide, was lead. Based on thermoluminescence measures, a numerical model was developed to simulate the memory effects in these materials and to predict their behavior in case of modification of charge carrier traps. Furthermore, several methods to reduce memory effects were investigated through the introduction of new traps with specific characteristics or through optical stimulation of the material in parallel to its irradiation. Finally, the role of radiosensitization in the scintillation efficiency under gamma excitation was highlighted on BaAl4O7 : Eu2+ ceramics. These results suggest a way to improve performance of some scintillating performance by the exaltation via prior irradiation

Caractérisation thermique de structures de combustion par les effets de la chauffe sur les minéraux : thermoluminescence et propriétés magnétiques de foyers de la grotte des Fraux (Dordogne) / Thermal characterisation of combustion structures by the heating effect on minerals : thermoluminescence and magnetic properties of hearths from the cave of Les Fraux (Dordogne, France)

Brodard, Aurélie 29 January 2013 (has links)
The study of the combustion structures, which are a remaining evidence of the human occupation, can give information about the way of occupation of a site. In this research we decided to complete the classical approaches of combustion structures generally based on typological description of hearths, frequency of fires, nature of fuel, etc. by a a thermal characterisation. This study deals with the thermal impacts recorded by the fired sediment. More precisely, the modifications of both thermoluminescence (TL) and magnetism properties with heating were investigated. The laboratory-site is the cave of Les Fraux (Dordogne, France) which was occupied in the Bronze Age. The archaeologists were wandering about the function and the way of occupation of this cave because of the existence of both domestic vestiges (archaeological occupation grounds, hearths, and ceramics) and symbolic evidences (rock art and votive ceramic deposition). A specific study of the combustion structures had started considering the significant number of hearths, more than sixty, and their importance in the human occupation. In addition, as the cave remained closed since the Bronze Age, the hearths are in an excellent state of conservation and that is an important point for our archaeometric study. The thermal characterisation of some hearths from the cave of Les Fraux firstly consisted in studying the paleothermometer potential of two properties: the thermoluminescence of quartz grains and the magnetism of iron oxides taken from the sediments. The TL paleothermometer was established by comparing TL signals of samples from archaeological hearths and those of thermal references heated in laboratory. Two properties were explored for the magnetic paleothermometer: the unblocking temperatures of the remanent magnetization and the evolution of magnetic signature (mineralogy and grain size) with heating. The paleotemperatures determined for the sediment of the hearths give a first information about the heating intensity of fires. Then experimental fires were carried out to calibrate paleothermometric data in quantity of energy and wood consumption, to check the suitability of laboratory thermal references, and to characterise the process of heat transfer inside the sediment. Finally, a numerical modeling of heat propagation within the sediment was implemented from temperatures recorded during fire experimentations. Numerical simulations performed in this model allowed us to estimate a minimal duration of functioning of the combustion structures.A novel tool for the thermal characterisation of combustion structures is then available.
