'Weaving the past with threads of memory': Narratives and Commemorations of the colonial war in southern Namibia

Biwa, Memory January 2012 (has links)

This study seeks to contribute to the literature on the colonial war, genocide and memory studies in Namibia. I review the way in which communities in southern Namibia have developed practices in which to recall and re-enact the colonial war by focusing on narrative genres and public commemorations. I also document how these practices in southern Namibia and the Northern Cape, South Africa symbolically connect and cut across colonial and national borders. I have used the idea of re-constructed and sensorial memory practices within which to view the various narrative genres which display a range of performance repertoire projected onto persons, monuments and land. The study also focuses on the ways in which these memory practices are engaged in order to develop strategies within which to historicise practices of freedom. These have been inserted in the dialogue on national reconciliation through the debates on reparations and the repatriation of human bodies exported to Europe during the colonial war. I argue that these practices depart from a conventional way in which to view an archive and history, and that these memory practices point to the ways in which the logic and acts of the colonial war and genocide were diametrically opposed through acts of humanisation

Fatigue and fracture mechanics analysis of threaded connections

Brennan, Feargal Peter January 1992 (has links)
This thesis aims to develop a comprehensive usable engineering design approach to the fatigue analysis of threaded connections. Although primarily concerned with the fatigue-fracture mechanics behaviour of screw threads, a broad review of stress analysis investigations in such connections is reported. Connection types, their functions and standardisation authorities are presented with the purpose of familiarising the reader with the subject and the options available to the design of threaded fasteners. Fatigue crack initiation is discussed with reference to the specific setting of a critical thread root. A crack initiation model is adapted for employment in thread root design. A novel weight function approach is developed for use in the determination of stress intensity factors for threaded connections. A generic solution is proposed valid for the fatigue crack growth from any thread root under any symmetrical stress system. Its development and discussion is examined in detail, remaining close to its proposed application. Two engineering situations where the chief structural components are comprised of threaded members are taken as case studies. The background to each situation is elaborated in detail and full-scale fatigue tests were conducted on the critical components. In all, fourteen full-scale tests under constant and variable amplitude loading are reported. The results of these are analysed and used to validate the fatigue crack initiation and propagation models. Useful observations which are helpful to understanding the fracture mechanisms operating during the fatigue of threaded connections are reported. Material and environmental considerations are examined and a survey of relevant materials and their behaviour in environments associated with threaded fasteners is presented. The merits or otherwise of some common engineering practices are discussed with regard to fatigue. A method has been developed for predicting fatigue life in large threaded connections under random loading. Experimental results have been gathered on two types of components used on certain oil rigs, tether joints and drill strings. The agreement found between prediction and experiment is appreciably better than by previous methods of analysis and also points to aspects open to further improvement.

DESIGN TRADE-OFFS FOR REAL-TIME CHAPTER 10 REPRODUCTION

Tompkins, Bob, K/Bidy, Gilles 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2007 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Third Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 22-25, 2007 / Riviera Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / This paper presents an analysis of various methods to address the reproduction of recorded Chapter 10 data in real-time. The standard IRIG 106 Chapter 10 recording format is quickly becoming the most commonly used data recording format in the community. As such, a lot of emphasis has been put on recording requirements including time-stamping, data multiplexing, etc. However, there are additional needs that must be considered when using Chapter 10 as the only permanent data record. It is often necessary to reproduce the original data stream exactly as it was recorded with all its timing characteristics. This paper presents various tradeoffs discovered while designing a real-time playback system for recorded chapter 10 data files. In particular, techniques such as just-enough buffering, data re-ordering, pre-processing, etc will be discussed.

Fair Service for High-Concurrent Requests

Zhanwen, Li January 2007 (has links)
Master of Engineering (Research) / This thesis presents a new approach to ensuring fair service for highly concurrent requests. Our design uses the advantages of staged event-driven architecture (SEDA) to support high-concurrent loadings and makes use of control theory to manage the system performance. In order to guarantee the quality of service is fairly made to each request, based on SEDA, the control system for fairness is developed as a combination of a global control framework and a set of local self-tune stags. The global control framework is used to control the performance of the whole staged network at the top-level, aimed at coordinating the performance of the stages in the network. On the other hand, each self-tune stage under the control framework is built on the thread pool model, and will use automatic control theory to adjust its performance locally in order to meet the overall target performance. The automatic control system in each stage consists of an automatic modeling mechanism and a feedback module, which optimizes the controller parameters in the system automatically and guarantees the quality of performance (service rate here) for the stage at runtime. Based on mathematical proof and simulation results, our designs are implemented in a SEDA-based web server running in a dynamic loading environment. Results demonstrate that the performance of the new system in the real world is almost the same as the theoretical results. It demonstrates that the design is able to adaptively ensure the quality of service to the high-concurrent requests fairly. Compared to the original SEDA design, our design is an effective and handy approach to significantly enhancing the performance of SEDA in a variety of aspects, including fairer service, faster convergent speed, better robustness, higher accuracy and ease of deployment in various practical applications.

A performance study of multithreading

Kwak, Hantak 07 December 1998 (has links)
As the performance gap between processor and memory grows, memory latency will be a major bottleneck in achieving high processor utilization. Multithreading has emerged as one of the most promising and exciting techniques used to tolerate memory latency by exploiting thread-level parallelism. The question however remains as to how effective multithreading is on tolerating memory latency. Due to the current availability of powerful microprocessors, high-speed networks and software infrastructure systems, a cost-effective parallel machine is often realized using a network of workstations. Therefore, we examine the possibility and the effectiveness of using multithreading in a networked computing environment. Also, we propose the Multithreaded Virtual Processor model as a means of integrating multithreaded programming paradigm and modern superscalar processor with support for fast context switching and thread scheduling. In order to validate our idea, a simulator was developed using a POSIX compliant Pthreads package and a generic superscalar simulator called Simple Scalar glued together with support for multithreading. The simulator is a powerful workbench that enables us to study how future superscalar design and thread management should be modified to better support multithreading. Our studies with MVP show that, in general, the performance improvement comes not only from tolerating memory latency, but also due to the data sharing among threads. / Graduation date: 1999

Mobilt övervakningssystem : System för internetkommunikation mellan sensorer, webbsida, server och databas

Stålberg, Ingela January 2012 (has links)
This thesis has been carried out in cooperation with a company which develops mobile sensor platforms. The sensors measure different types of data such as temperature, pressure etc.. They will communicate through the internet with a server that stores data in a database. This system will be controlled and monitored through a web page. The project's aim has been to develop this system and to implement a server, a database, a website and a client application that simulates sensor signals. In addition, the performance of the server should be measured and a usability test should be performed. To measure the performance of the server, different variants of the client program, which continuously sent data from an increasing number of clients to the server, were developed. In the usability test the participants had to solve a number of tasks after which they answered a survey and were interviewed. The result is a communication system that works according to the requirements and a client program that is also used for testing the server. The investigation of the server performance showed a maximum bandwidth of about 370 kb/s while serving up to 70 clients. The database consumed 95% of the bandwith. However, with a rising number of clients there was a continous decline in the performance. In usability tests, there was a big difference in how people perceive computer programs depending on their experience and education. For this application, the server worked well, but if the project is to be developed into a large scale, it then becomes relevant to move onto an asynchronous working server instead of a thread-server. Queries to a database (MySQL) considerably decreases bandwidth and should be optimized where possible.

Jämförelse av trådbibliotek för Linux

Lundell, Daniel January 2003 (has links)
