A Toolkit for Rapid FPGA System Deployment

FPGA implementation tools have not kept pace with growing FPGA density. It is common for non-trivial designs to take multiple hours to go through the entire FPGA toolflow (synthesis, mapping, placement, routing, bitstream generation). FPGA implementation tool runtime is a major hindrance to FPGA Productivity. In modern FPGA designs, designers often change logic and/or connections in an already existing design. If small modifications are made to a particular module in a design, then almost the entire design will go through most of the FPGA toolflow again. This can be time consuming for complex designs and hinder productivity of FPGA designers. The main goal of this thesis is to improve FPGA productivity by reducing FPGA design implementation time for modifications made to an already existing design for rapid system deployment. In this thesis, a toolkit is presented, which is capable of making design modifications at a lower level of abstraction for already existing designs on Xilinx FPGAs. The toolkit is a part of the open-source RapidSmith framework and includes the EDIF parser, mapper, placer, and router. It can be used to change logic and/or modify connections. Modules can be placed, unplaced, relocated, and/or duplicated with ease using this toolkit. Significant time-savings were seen by making use of the toolkit along-with the standard Xilinx FPGA toolflow, for making design modifications to already existing designs. / Master of Science

Embedding consultant radiographer roles within radiology departments: A framework for success

Yes / Objectives: Many organisations struggle to clearly differentiate the radiographer consultant role from advanced or specialist practice, with newly appointed consultant practitioners often illprepared for working at this level. This article discusses the design, implementation and validation of an outcomes framework for benchmarking competencies for trainee or new-in-post consultant radiographers. Methods: Five experienced radiographers from different clinical specialisms were seconded to a twelve month consultant trainee post, guided by a locally-devised outcomes framework. A longitudinal qualitative study explored, from the radiographers' perspective, the impact of the outcomes framework on the transition to consultant practice and beyond. Data collection included semi-structured interviews (months 1, 6 and 12), validation via a focus group (month 18) and a group interview (5 years). Results: Early interactions with framework objectives were mechanistic, but as participants better understood the role more creative approaches emerged. Despite diverse clinical expertise, the framework facilitated parity between participants, promoting transparency and credibility which was important in how the consultant role was perceived. All participants achieved all framework outcomes and were subsequently appointed to substantive consultant radiographer positions. Conclusion This outcomes framework facilitates experienced radiographers to successfully transition into consultant radiographers, enabling them to meet multiple non-clinical targets while continuing to work effectively within a changing clinical environment. It is the first validated benchmarking tool designed to support the transition to radiographer consultant practice. Adoption of the tool will provide a standardised measure of consultant radiographer outcomes that will promote inter-organisational transferability hitherto unseen in the UK. / Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust Hospitals

A Lifestyle Modification Toolkit to Increase Physical Activity Among Young Adults

Substantial decreases in physical activity have been observed between early to late adolescence in males and females, with decreases in levels of activity into adulthood. Physical inactivity among young adults leads to medical conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, stroke, ischemic heart disease, falls resulting in hip fractures, and depression later in life. Advanced Nurse Practitioners have a significant impact on the problem of physical inactivity among young adults through education to improve knowledge regarding physical activity participation. The focus of this project was to develop a toolkit on lifestyle modification as a resource for physical education teachers and nurses to increase physical activity participation and to decrease sedentary behaviors among young adults. The project practice question asked whether an evidence-based toolkit would address the identified needs of improving lifestyle diet and physical activity in young adults. Pender’s health promotion model guided the planning and development of the project. The Computer Attitude Questionnaire together with the 3-Day Physical Activity Recall was used during a needs assessment. Feedback from the survey was included in the development of the toolkit. A 5-item survey was given to 5 content experts who evaluated the toolkit. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to obtain a content validity index score of 1.00. Findings show universal agreement about the content of the toolkit as a resource for physical education teachers and school nurses to encourage physical activity participation in young adults. The implications of project findings for positive social change include the potential to increase the involvement of young adults in activities that improve the lives of the individual.

Master of Science / Department of Computing and Information Sciences / Alley Stoughton / This thesis covers the process leading up to the release of eXene 2.0, a User Interface Management System (UIMS) toolkit. Since its inception, eXene has provided a unique way to create meaningful graphical user interfaces (GUIs) for Standard ML applications. Additionally, it has gone through several quality revisions which have both enhanced the toolkit and corrected many deficiencies that were present. Even with these improvements, however, the full potential of eXene has become increasingly difficult for developers to utilize. That is, in spite of the natural innovation that eXene brings to GUI construction, its current lack of extensibility, usability, and functionality has caused Standard ML developers to choose simpler, more familiar UIMS toolkits, despite their limitations, for the creation of their applications. In light of this fact, eXene needs an internal and cosmetic overhaul to extend its usage and appeal. First, to improve its extensibility, formerly weakened by organic growth, eXene requires some restructuring of its architecture. Second, to improve its overall usability, previously stifled by sparse documentation, eXene requires the implementation of an interactive electronic document for its API. Finally, to improve its functionality, several new multi-purpose widgets need to be introduced. It is the author's hypothesis that the revised structure, improved documentation, and additional multi-purpose widgets detailed in this thesis sufficiently elevate eXene's extensibility, usability, and functionality such that eXene can be considered a fully featured UIMS toolkit. With these changes and the release of eXene 2.0, eXene is more likely to be adopted as the primary UIMS toolkit for Standard ML developers.

The Police National Database (PND) was launched in June 2011 as a direct recommendation from the Bichard Inquiry. Its main purpose is to provide a national platform to share police information and for the first time, the PND will provide a single view of data held in police intelligence, custody, crime, child and domestic abuse systems across the UK. The PND will not replace local police systems, but it will allow all forces to see and share information - that until now has only been available within individual force boundaries.

Developing a service for the personalisation of running shoes

The aim of this research was to specify and develop a service that is capable of delivering personalisable running shoes with mass appeal. Current sports footwear personalisation services focus primarily on aesthetic design via the internet. Aesthetics do not appear to be the consumers primary interest when purchasing running shoes and a large number are also reluctant to purchase online; preferring to purchase from specialist running stores where they receive the advice needed and can directly interact with the product. After reviewing the literature, it was hypothesised that the implementation of a primarily comfort and performance running shoe personalisation service with an in store fitting element, utilising additive manufacturing as an enabling technology, would give the greatest opportunity for success. Survey methods and store visits were employed that targeted both qualitative and quantitative data, exploring consumer running shoe purchase preferences, running shoe use and opinions of current personalisation services. The findings from these studies supported the previously stated hypothesis and enabled the specification of a suitable service. Subsequently, the focus of this research was the development of a toolkit, a computer-based system that enables the consumer to make their selections, the core of most of the current services. Experts in biomechanics and additive manufacturing were consulted to ensure that a feasible yet innovative solution was delivered. The resultant toolkit prototype (www.yourstep.co.uk) was tested formatively, using multiple methods and summatively with a large sample. Using the toolkit was considered an enjoyable, intuitive experience; a large percentage (69%) of summative testing participants would consider purchasing personalised running shoes using this method. The approach adopted to specify and develop this service provides a framework, based upon empirical research, for those looking to implement a practical running shoe personalisation service that meets their consumers requirements.

Molecular tools for functional genomic analyses of the stealth pathogenesis of wheat by Zymoseptoria tritici

Zymoseptoria tritici is an ascomycete fungus that causes Septoria tritici leaf blotch disease, which is one of the most devastating diseases of wheat. The lack of molecular tools has withheld functional genomics and consequently has left extensive gaps in the knowledge of the biology of infection by Z. tritici. The current research was conducted to develop molecular tools in order to facilitate forward and reserves genetic screens in Z. tritici. These tools include an optimised genetic manipulation protocol, the Z. tritici strains that provide high frequency targeted genome manipulations, a strategy for gene overexpression and protein tagging, and regulatable promoters for controlled gene expression in Z. tritici. The regulatable promoters served to reveal that the Z. tritici β-(1,3)- glucan synthase (BGS1) gene encoded an essential protein, which regulated cell wall stress tolerance and was therefore, a potential drug target. In addition, these molecular tools revealed a virulence-associated role of the glyoxylate cycle in Z. tritici as inactivation of this pathway impeded pre-penetration morphogenesis, which was restored by exogenous glucose application. This result implied that Z. tritici engaged the glyoxylate cycle to produce energy though gluconeogenesis by channelling the by-products of lipolysis. This significance of the glyoxylate cycle during initiation of the bi-phasic infection cycle suggests that Z. tritici is not a hemibiotroph, but a necrotrophic pathogen with an extended asymptomatic phase of infection. Overall, the molecular tools developed in this study will facilitate large-scale functional genomic analyses to interrogate the biology of infection by Z. tritici. The resulting data will inform the development of durable control strategies to combat Z. tritici outbreaks.

English The thesis explores the topic of cost planning of Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) projects in the Czech Republic, especially with respect to institutional settings and road infrastructure. First, the PPP concept is introduced from a theoretical perspective and compared to traditional public procurement. Then the financing of PPP projects is discussed in the context of project finance and the European PPP market. The main part of the thesis focuses on public procurement of road infrastructure and the advantages of the PPP organizational structure. Initially, flaws of the procurement institutions are identified and a number of solutions suggested. The solutions cover four main areas: improvement of procurement laws, better qualifications of public officials, strategic planning of needed roads and asset management perspective on the existing infrastructure. The question whether Czech institutions are hindering the potential of PPP projects is answered positively. Follows a thorough empirical analysis of a World Bank PPP model for highways through a Monte Carlo simulation. A particular case of R35 motorway is evaluated as a PPP project and key drivers of public and private NPV are identified and compared across three different scenarios. Neste trabalho, apresentamos Visual Soccer Match Analysis (VSMA), uma ferramenta para a compreensão dos diferentes aspectos relacionados com a evolução de um jogo de futebol. A nossa ferramenta recebe como entrada as coordenadas de cada jogador durante o jogo, bem como os eventos associados. Apresentamos um design visual que permite identificar rapidamente padrões relevantes em jogo. A abordagem foi desenvolvida em conjunto com colegas da área da educação física com experiência em análise de futebol. Validamos a utilidade da nossa abordagem utilizando dados de várias partidas, juntamente com avaliações de especialistas. / Soccer is a fascinating sport that captures the attention of millions of people in the world. Professional soccer teams, as well as the broadcasting media, have a deep interest in the analysis of soccer matches. Statistical summaries are the most-used approach to describe a soccer match. However, they often fail to capture the evolution of the game and changes of strategies that happen. In this work, we present the Visual Soccer Match Analysis (VSMA) system, a tool for understanding the different aspects associated with the evolution of a soccer match. Our tool receives as input the coordinates of each player throughout the match and related events. We present a visual design that allows to quickly identify relevant patterns in the match. Our approach was developed in conjunction with colleagues from the physical education field with expertise in soccer analysis. We validated the system utility using several matches together with expert evaluations.
