Turkish Pre-service Teachers' / Critical Thinking Levels, Attitudes And Self-efficacy Beliefs In Teaching For Critical ThinkingAkdere, Nihal 01 July 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this study was three-fold: first, to describe pre-service teachers&rsquo / (i) critical thinking levels, (ii) attitudes towards teaching for critical thinking, and (iii) self-efficacy beliefs in teaching for critical thinking in terms of performance and outcome efficacy beliefs / secondly, to investigate whether there was a correlation between these three variables / and finally, to examine the relationship between participants&rsquo / certain background variables and their critical thinking levels, attitudes and self efficacy beliefs in teaching for critical thinking.
A cross-sectional survey design was employed. The participants of the study were senior pre-service teachers from fourteen state universities across the seven geographical regions in Turkey. Quantitative data were collected by means of (i) a critical thinking test, (ii) an attitude scale, (iii) a self-efficacy scale with two subscales: performance efficacy and outcome efficacy, and (iv) a participant profile form, all of which were designed by the researcher.
Both descriptive and inferential statistics (MANOVA) were used. Results indicated that pre-service teachers&rsquo / critical thinking levels were &lsquo / below average&rsquo / however, they had a moderately positive attitude towards and a moderate level of self efficacy in teaching for critical thinking. The correlation analyses indicated that there was a moderate degree of positive correlation between teachers&rsquo / attitude and self efficacy beliefs towards critical thinking. Finally, the results of MANOVA analyses indicated that pre-service teachers&rsquo / gender and level of motivation towards teaching had no impact on their critical thinking levels, attitudes or self efficacy beliefs in teaching for critical thinking. On the other hand, major, academic achievement, high school background, father&rsquo / s level of education, reading behaviour, and prior training in critical thinking had impacts of varying degrees on one or more of the dependent variables.

Establishing a new teachership through interactive radio instruction : evaluating the impact of IRI on teachers' practices in Malawian primary schoolsShaba, Chester B. K. January 2009 (has links)
This evaluation research study is concerned with the quality of support and in-service development for Malawian primary teachers through the medium of radio. The study aims to evaluate the influence that the current United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded interactive radio instruction (IRI) programme has on teachers’ behaviours, with the aim of proposing some guidelines for the development of a model of continuing professional development (CPD), appropriate to the Malawian context, using IRI. It identifies the teacher as a critical entity in raising levels of learners’ achievement within the primary school and posits that through improved teacher support and development, higher levels of learner achievement can be attained. The study identifies the potential that communication technology in the form of interactive radio instruction (IRI) offers in improving CPD of teachers at a cost that could be affordable to disadvantaged school communities in the country. The study takes place in a context where the Malawi government has been challenged to provide quality universal primary education after introducing free primary education (FPE) in 1994, which resulted in a massive expansion of primary schools, resulting in acute shortages of teachers. The study has drawn on aspects of practice theory and in particular the work of Giddens (1984), Bourdieu (1977, 1978), Shatzki et al (2001) and Reckwitz (2002a) in an attempt to emphasise the role of artefacts, such as interactive radio, as part of social practice. A practice theoretic perspective has been used to highlight the contentious role played by learning-objects in teacher practice and the need for flexibility and innovation in employing learning-objects like interactive radio as part of teaching practice. To carry out a critical exploration of the issues of teacher learning and practice, a longitudinal qualitative research approach was proposed for the evaluation of the existing IRI programme in Malawi. As the researcher was also actively involved in the planning of the Malawi IRI programme from onset, he therefore maintained a dual role of researcher and co-founder throughout the research process. The empirical evidence employed within this research was elicited through three main processes: interview survey, participant observation and focus groups in order to achieve validity through methodical triangulation. The analysis of this evidence shows the considerable difficulties faced by classroom teachers in attempting to adopt interactive radio and therefore be able to use interactive/active learner-centred instruction as part of their ongoing teaching practice. The analysis, however, also highlights the possibility of exploiting interactive radio for provision of an integrated, sustainable CPD of teachers in educationally deprived school communities. Overall, the research study puts emphasis on the need for paying attention to the social practices (contextually specific) within which the use of educational technologies (such as interactive radio), are enmeshed. There is need to explicate the details of such practices (instead of adopting a narrow, technical, focus on attributes of interactive radio itself) in order to improve the efficacy of using interactive radio.

This study intended to explore preservice elementary teachers&rsquo / science
knowledge level, attitude toward science teaching and their efficacy beliefs regarding
science teaching. In addition, the contribution of science knowledge level and
attitudes toward science teaching on Turkish preservice elementary teachers&rsquo / efficacy
beliefs was investigated.
The present study was conducted at the end of the spring semester of 2003-
2004 academic year with a total number of 750 (n=531 females / n=216 males / and
n=3 gender not provided) fourth-year preservice elementary teachers who enrolled at
elementary teacher education programs of nine different universities in Turkey. Data
were collected utilizing three questionnaires: the Science Teaching Efficacy Belief
Instrument (STEBI-B) developed by Riggs and Enochs (1990), Science Achievement
Test, and Science Teaching Attitude Scale developed by Thompson and Shrigley
(1986).
Data of the present study were analyzed utilizing descriptive and inferential
statistics. Analysis of the self-efficacy survey indicated that preservice elementary
teachers had moderate sense of self-efficacy beliefs regarding science teaching on
both Personal Science Teaching Efficacy and Outcome Expectancy dimensions of
the STEBI-B. Also, preservice elementary teachers indicated low level of science
knowledge and generally positive attitude toward science teaching. Furthermore,
science knowledge level and attitude towards science teaching made a statistically
significant contribution to the variation in preservice elementary teachers&rsquo / personal
science teaching efficacy beliefs and outcome expectancy.

This investigative study analyses a Course of continuous training for Senior High School teachers, which tackled the youth empowerment and the school. It aimed to permit the reflection about relations established among school, teachers and young people, making possible another look and another comprehension about the ways of production of the contemporary young cultures, the social representations about the young people and their implication in the school culture. It started from an affirmative prospect which intended to give visibility to the diversity/plurality of the youth expressions, in different contexts and experiences, and to permit new relations between generations in the school space. The research methodological strategy was the proposal of a space of continuous training for a group of about 20 teachers that work in different public and private schools in Porto Alegre and suburbs in RS. Two thirds of the teachers work in public schools and the rest works in private schools, beyond 6 educators who coordinate social projects among young people. The universe of the research was not constituted by a random choice, because it tried to include the plurality of youth and the teaching experiences of the schools, which are peculiar in each social context. For the study and investigation with teacher during the continuous training, the proposed themes were about Contemporary Cultures of young people and School, divides in two topics: School Culture and Youth Concept. Related to these topics, authors like, José Gimeno Sacristán, António Nóvoa, Miguel Arroyo, Maurice Tardif and Alberto Melucci, Paulo César Carrano, Marília Spósito, Jorge Baeza Correa, José Machado Pais and Jorge Atílio Iulianelli, constitute, respectively, the main theoretical references of this study. The theme Contemporary Cultures of Young People, proposed as a guideline in the investigative study, made possible to the teachers comprehend how the representations of the school culture and youth cultures, formed along the years, influence school activity and, in this way, the necessity of reconsidering the young people participation in the school space.

As trajetórias estudantis em licenciaturas com baixas taxas de diplomação : tendências e resistências / Student pathways in bachelor's degrees with low rates of graduating : tendencies and resistancesPaz, Cláudia Terra do Nascimento January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation is focused on initial training of teachers attending bachelor’s degrees with low rates of graduation, investigating tendencies of the student pathways in these bachelor’s degrees from the perspective of resistance. The courses that have been studied were Physics and Philosophy of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. It has been investigated pathways of 845 students through the diagnostic of students flow method from 2000 to 2015 with 15 coortes of analysis in each course. The Licentiate in Philosophy presented an average percentage of evasion of 60,64% due to abandonment, 18,29% due to mobility and 20,5% due to graduation. The students remained in the course on the average time of three years and eight months and integrated 37,22% of the academic curriculum. The Licentiate in Physics presented an average percentage of evasion of 72,57% due to abandonment, of 11,70% due to mobility and 15,72% due to graduation. The students remained in the course for an average of four years and integrated 31% of the academic curriculum. Several studies had already identified that the main reasons of evasion due abandonment in these courses are related to the impossibility of reconciling study and work purposes; dissatisfactions related to the absence of flexible training paths and high percentage of grade repetition in subjects that are far from a pedagogical practice, apart from the discredit of teaching profession. On one side these variables turned up applicable to the reality of the investigated courses as they have a meaningful percentage of working students and curriculum options that define empowerment strategies driven by a conservative prolonged and strict formation journey, as well as national historical elements involving these courses, on the other side. Therefore, considering the academic fields of power related disputes, it seems that the students are resisting to those same forces which insist in conservatism and hinder the construction of a teaching identity. Nevertheless, this resistance does not happen as a direct confrontation but as a re-existence and an alternative choice. Therefore, the thesis that I defend is that the analyzed pathways are of resistance and not of failure.

Previous issue date: 2012 / The present study describes the development and working conditions of teachers who work in youth and adults on the campus of the IFPA, the city of Bethlehem objective is to analyze the formation articulated to the teaching work in the context of the IFPA PROEJA considering the route training and changes in teaching. The theme was developed through a qualitative approach because of the possibility of describing the subjective aspects that fall within the subject matter, which can not be explained in its objective form. The methodological approach consisted of literature review, followed by a case study, adopting as a technique for data collection structured interview using a structured interview which formed the basis for establishing a dialogue with ten subjects in the research. It was found that the PROEJA by providing a mid-level professional training for young people and adults, is operationalized within the IFPA with significant limitations in training teachers to work in a different reality, since it is a public differences with route of education, life history, aspirations and life plans, which need to be taken into consideration. We conclude that there are still many ways to go under the IFPA and institutional capacity building of teachers to work in PROEJA, since it is subject to natural process of schooling, which should be considered in the development of the political teaching of courses, and to establish benchmarks didactic and pedagogical able to subsidize the teaching in the face of this reality. In this case, the training and working conditions of teachers who work in PROEJA-IFPA, needs to implement improvements to ensure the quality of vocational training to these subjects, but also to rescue the social value of the teacher as well as ensuring teachers operating in the PROEJA pedagogical reasons enough that they can intervene with sufficient conditions to realize the teaching effectively.
