“Drinking Deeply with Delight”: An Investigation of Transformative Images in Isaiah 1 and 65-66

Radford, Peter January 2016 (has links)
This project examines the images used in the beginning and ending chapters of Isaiah. The purpose of this project is to trace the transformation of specific images from their introduction in Isaiah 1 to their re-interpretation in Isaiah 65-66. While this analysis uses the verbal parallels (shared vocabulary) as a starting point, the present project seeks to move beyond the analysis of verbal parallels. The discovery and analysis of these transformed images forges a deeper connection between the first and last chapters of Isaiah. The three images are as follows: The first image occurs in Isaiah 1:2-4 where YHWH is described as a spurned parent. This image is transformed and reinterpreted in Isaiah 66:13 where YHWH is described as a comforting mother. The second image occurs in Isaiah 1:15 which pictures YHWH as an unresponsive deity. This image is transformed in Isaiah 65:24 where YHWH is presented as an attentive god. The third image occurs in 1:21 where Zion is pictured as a prostitute. This image is transformed in 66:10-11 where Jerusalem is presented as a birthing and nursing mother. On this basis the present project proposes a rhetorical and literary purpose behind the repetition/transformation of images in Isaiah 65-66. These purposes are explored in conjunction with the analysis of each image. In addition, this project identifies effective reading strategies for the book as a whole and contributes to a growing trend that sees Isaiah as a literary unity. / Religion

ERK and JNK activation is essential for transformation by v-Rel

Sheely, Juliana Irene 23 October 2009 (has links)
v-Rel is the acutely oncogenic member of the NF-[kappa]B family of transcription factors and transforms cells through the altered regulation of pathways normally controlled by cellular NF-[kappa]B. Initial studies revealed that expression of v-Rel results in the strong and sustained activation of the ERK and JNK MAP kinases. This induction is critical for the v-Rel transformed phenotype, as suppression of MAPK activity with chemical inhibitors or siRNA severely limited colony formation of v-Rel transformed cell lines of hematopoietic origin. However, signaling must be maintained within a certain range in these cells, as strong additional activation of either pathway through expression of constitutively active MKK mutants also attenuated the transformed phenotype. Studies in primary spleen cells revealed that MAPK signaling is also required for the early stages of v-Rel-mediated transformation. However, constitutive MAPK activity further enhanced the transformation efficiency of v-Rel in primary cells. These studies, as well as analogous experiments in DT40 cells, indicate distinct requirements for MAPK activity at different stages of v-Rel-mediated transformation. The proto-oncoprotein, c-Rel, only weakly activates ERK and JNK signaling compared to v-Rel. Importantly, elevated MAPK activity enhanced transformation by c-Rel, indicating that the ability of v-Rel to induce MAPK signaling is a major contributor to its oncogenic potential. Taken together, this work demonstrates an important role for ERK and JNK activity in transformation by v-Rel. Additional studies examined mechanisms through which MAPK activity is regulated in v-Rel transformed cells. Feedback regulation of the ERK activator, MKK1, at T292 was shown to limit ERK activation in v-Rel transformed cells, preventing the detrimental effects of constitutive activity. This result is the first indication that this regulation may have a role in the maintenance of transformation. Further, several v-Rel induced cytokines were identified that activate ERK and JNK signaling in v-Rel transformed cells, revealing one means by which v-Rel-dependent transcriptional changes lead to MAPK activation. These studies demonstrate the integration of multiple mechanisms in achieving the optimal levels of MAPK activity that are essential for v-Rel-mediated transformation. / text

The Impact of Foreign Direct Investment on International Trade: An Empirical Study of China

Xiao, Jing January 2008 (has links)
This paper investigates the impact of inward FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) on international trade of China empirically on the country level by using panel data from 1984 to 2007. Two separate transformed models which are based on the gravity equation and refer to the econometric models of some previous studies, are used in this paper to estimate the effect of FDI inflows on exports and imports respectively. The estimation results confirmed the complementary relationship between FDI inflows and trade of China both on exports and imports, which has also been supported by previous empirical studies.

The Transformed Rejection Method for Generation Random Variables, an Alternative to the Ratio of Uniforms Method

Hörmann, Wolfgang, Derflinger, Gerhard January 1994 (has links) (PDF)
Theoretical considerations and empirical results show that the one-dimensional quality of non-uniform random numbers is bad and the discrepancy is high when they are generated by the ratio of uniforms method combined with linear congruential generators. This observation motivates the suggestion to replace the ratio of uniforms method by transformed rejection (also called exact approximation or almost exact inversion), as the above problem does not occur for this method. Using the function $G(x) =\left( \frac(a)(1-x)+b\right)x $ with appropriate $a$ and $b$ as approximation of the inverse distribution function the transformed rejection method can be used for the same distributions as the ratio of uniforms method. The resulting algorithms for the normal, the exponential and the t-distribution are short and easy to implement. Looking at the number of uniform deviates required, at the code length and at the speed the suggested algorithms are superior to the ratio of uniforms method and compare well with other algorithms suggested in literature. Combining Similarity Transformed Equation of Motion Coupled Cluster (STEOM-CC), Vibronic Coupling models, and Spin-Orbit Coupling: Towards a First Principle Description of Intersystem Crossing

Sous, John January 2013 (has links)
Electronic Structure Theory has led to a variety of developments and applications. In the Nooijen group the focus is on the development and use of Coupled Cluster based approaches. Coupled Cluster is a very strong and accurate approach to the quantum mechanical problem. The research results presented in the thesis testify to the Similarity Transformed Equation of Motion Coupled Cluster (STEOM-CC) for being a very accurate and yet computationally inexpensive approach for excited states. This study reveals new features about STEOM and provides promise regarding future improvement in the methodology. STEOM can be used as the first step in the construction of the Vibronic model, which is a strong tool to move to paradigms beyond the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Spin-Orbit Coupling (SOC) is a very important ingredient required to study relativistic phenomena and its quantum mechanical implementation for many body systems is not straightforward. The most widely used SOC operator in Chemical Physics is the Breit-Pauli operator, which requires employing non-trivial approximations to the Dirac equation to adapt the theory to many body systems. The integration of electronic structure approaches, Vibronic Coupling, and SOC is essential to study the phenomenon of intersystem crossing (transition between spin states) in fine detail. In this thesis a computational benchmark of STEOM is discussed, while the frameworks of Vibronic Coupling and Spin-Orbit Coupling (SOC) are considered on a theoretical level.
