Transient modeling and protection of the Sen Transformer

Many different Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices have been studied in recent years in order to control the flow of power through transmission lines and reduce the overall burden on the power grid. The net results of these devices are decreased utility costs, increased system stability, and improved system flexibility. The main issues with most currently available FACTS controllers are the high costs of installation, and operation. The Sen Transformer (ST) is a new FACTS device that decreases these costs by using relatively inexpensive and industry familiar transformer technology to independently control the active and reactive power in a transmission line.<p> This thesis introduces the first full transient model for the ST developed in an ElectroMagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) using a hybrid transformer modeling approach. This technique handles all the non-linearities of the core, including losses and saturation effects, as well as inter-phase coupling, and zero sequence effect with an attached topographically correct core model. This new model can be used in a variety of power system studies such as transient and dynamic simulations, and protection analysis. The flexibility of the hybid ST model allows for different core and winding configurations as well as response to very fast transients with little modification. Fault analysis studies are presented to showcase the capabilities of the transient ST model developed.<p> The first ST transient model using the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) technique is also created for comparison with the hybrid ST model. This method uses Maxwells equations, material non-linearities and coupled electric circuits to obtain a precise transient solution for the ST. There is good agreement between the two models in a test system for multiple types of fault scenarios. The hybrid ST model is therefore the preferred model to use for fault analysis since it reduces simulation time drastically when compared to the FEA ST model.<p> The hybrid ST model is then used to develop and test differential, and ground protection schemes that ensure device safety during faulted scenarios. The protection schemes are analyzed and compared with analogous Phase Angle Regulator (PAR) schemes that have been implemented for many years.

Dynamic Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Processing with Energy Storage Applications

The cryogenic carbon capture™ (CCC) process provides energy- and cost-efficient carbon capture and can be configured to provide an energy storage system using an open-loop natural gas (NG) refrigeration system, which is called energy storing cryogenic carbon capture (CCC-ES™). This investigation focuses on the transient operation and especially on the dynamic response of this energy storage system and explores its efficiency, effectiveness, design, and operation. This investigation included four tasks.The first task explores the steady-state design of four different natural gas liquefaction processes simulated by Aspen HYSYS. These processes differ from traditional LNG process in that the CCC process vaporizes the LNG and the cold vapors return through the LNG heat exchangers, exchanging sensible heat with the incoming flows. The comparisons include costs and energy performance with individually optimized processes, each operating at three operating conditions: energy storage, energy recovery, and balanced operation. The second task examines steady-state and transient models and optimization of natural gas liquefaction using Aspen HYSYS. Steady-state exergy and heat exchanger efficiency analyses characterize the performance of several potential systems. Transient analyses of the optimal steady-state model produced most of the results discussed here. The third task explores transient Aspen HYSYS modeling and optimization of two natural gas liquefaction processes and identifies the rate-limiting process components during load variations. Novel flowrate variations included in this investigation drive transient responses of all units, especially compressors and heat exchangers. Model-predictive controls (MPC) effectively manages such heat exchangers and compares favorably with results using traditional controls. The last task shows how an unprocessed natural gas (NG) pretreatment system can remove more than 90% of the CO2 from NG with CCC technology using Aspen Plus simulations and experimental data. This task shows how CCC-based technology can treat NG streams to prepare them for LNG use. Data from an experimental bench-scale apparatus verify simulation results. Simulated results on carbon (CO2) capture qualitatively and quantitatively agree with experimental results as a function of feedstock properties.

Modeling and Control of a PMSynRel Drive for a Plug-InHybrid Electric Vehicle

This thesis presents two transient models for a prototype integrated charger for use in a plug-in hybrid-electrical vehicle application. The models can be useful in order to develop control algorithms for the system or to recommend improvements to the machine design. A flux map based method, obtaining input data from simulations using the finite element method (FEM) is used to model the grid synchronization process. The grid side voltage can then be predicted by incorporating spatial flux linkage harmonics. The model is implemented in Matlab/Simulink and compared to stand alone FEM simulations with good agreement. The charging process is modeled using an inductance based model also requiring FEM simulations as input data. Since the flux linkages in the grid and inverter side windings are dependent on each other, the presented transient model is linearized around a specific operating point. This model is also implemented in a Matlab/Simulink environment. Sensorless control of a PMSynRel drive is also studied in this thesis. Focus is put on operating limits due to magnetic saturation when operating at low speeds. The rotating and pulsating voltage vector injection methods for sensorless control are studied in detail. A technique to map the feasible sensorless control region is proposed which utilizes the resulting position error signal rather than data of differential inductances. This technique is implemented experimentally and compared to corresponding FEM simulations with good agreement. The impact of spatial inductance harmonics on the quality of the position estimates is also studied. A method to predict the maximum position estimation error due to the inductance harmonics is proposed based on simplified analytical models. A technique is presented and experimentally verified which can compensate for this effect by injecting a modified rotating voltage carrier. Lastly, the impact of saturation in the rotor structure on the initial magnet polarity detection is investigated. The experimental results, in good agreement with the corresponding FEM simulations, indicate that the impact of saturation in the magnet bridges of rotor is the dominant phenomenon at lower peak current magnitudes. / QC 20110928
