The temperature and character of the phase transition were found to depend on the composition of the sample and the method of preparation. B.E.T. Building Ecological Transition

In the era of the Anthropocene, cities are facing significant social, economic and environmental changes that, unlike previous historical periods, are occurring extremely rapidly. The acronym b.e.t. - included in the title - refers to the word bet, whose definition is closely linked to the concepts of unpredictability and risk. But the word bet also refers to the notion of opportunity understood positively as the possibility of success. The challenge that the cities of the 21st century have to face concerns the overcoming of the limits and rigidities of the current urban planning, which seems inadequate to manage the new dynamics in action. The term resilience has been introduced in the lexicon of urban planning and architecture to support a new approach to the management of the contemporary city, capable of implementing the attributes of diversity, variability and redundancy of the urban system. The structure of this research wants to retrace the holistic nature of the theme and is proposed as a mosaic of projects, tools and strategies that have the potential to assemble each time in a different way. The objective is to emphasize the importance of triggering in the urban system a plurality of actions, capable of acting simultaneously on multiple levels to ensure processes suitable for change and multifunctional. This research does not intend to trace a defined path, the assumptions of flexibility and adaptability related to the definition of resilience do not allow to define a new urban planning technique based on a model to be followed for the management of the territory, but proposes an open framework of possibilities to guide the cities towards the ecological transition and make them increasingly livable, comfortable, happy, vibrant and beautiful.

In order to address the purpose of this study the following research questions have been investigated: a. What are the critical elements that are reported as having impacted students' success or failure in making the transition from an alternative program back into high school? b. What types of intervention strategies occur when students return to high school from alternative programs? c. How are students returning from alternative programs achieving in terms of their grades, attendance and behavior? In this study students and parents, along with administrators, counselors and teachers, share their understandings about the value of interactions and interventions. Their descriptions will help explain why some students achieve success and why some experience failure when they return to high school from an alternative setting. / Ed. D.

Examining the Effectiveness of Capturing Kids’ Hearts Training for Teachers in a Ninth Grade Transition Program

The purpose of this research was to determine if there was a difference in the scores of students on the “What Helped Me to Become Successful in the Ninth Grade?” survey between the retained and promoted students who had been taught by teachers who had Capturing Kids’ Hearts (CKH) training during 2007-08 school year. The students in one Mid-Atlantic Virginia, urban school were the study population. Students who had completed the ninth grade on time with teachers who had CKH training were compared with students who had been retained with teachers who had the CKH training were asked to complete a student perception survey. A mean score on a 25-item Student Perception Survey for each item was computed for the two groups of students who were in this high school during the 2007-08 school year and remained during the 2008-09 school year. Particular attention was given to nine questions that focused on relationship issues. A t-test was utilized to determine if there was a significant difference between comparative data on the mean for the two groups of students. In all nine of the relationship questions, there was no statistical significant difference in the mean of the responses for the repeat ninth grade students and the on time tenth grade students. The responses to the relationship questions indicated that the training the teachers received had a similar effect on students whether they were on time tenth grade students or repeat ninth grade students. The percentage of repeat ninth grade students had a higher percentage than the tenth grade students of agree responses on five of the nine relationship questions. Additionally, the median for the repeat ninth grade participants was higher on six of the nine relationship questions; therefore, the repeat ninth grade students had a stronger response to the relationship questions than the on time tenth grade students. The CKH training was a three-day off site learning experience for ninth grade teachers that provided tools to build positive, productive, and trusting relationships among themselves and their students. The EXCEL Model utilized five distinctive training areas: (a) engaging, (b) exploring, (c) communicating, (d) empowering, and (e) launching. The focus for students included developing skills that could affect their school success. / Ph. D.

A thoughtful architectural transition prepares for journey ahead by intensifying aspects of space and relating it to the before and after. In the analogous the trifold structure of time and tenses, transition could be designated as the present, situate between past and future. Transition is always assumed as a space that connects the two other spaces. The thesis claims that a building functions better with a thoughtful transition. Exploring the experiences of transitional care from child and adolescent mental health services to adult mental health services : the perspectives of professionals, parents and young people

Transitional care is an important process for professionals to consider, particularly as recent studies have shown how a mental health difficulty in adolescence will persist into adulthood. This indicates that a number of those seen in Child and Adolescent mental health services are likely to make the transition into Adult services. For professionals from both services, barriers can arise when supporting young people across service boundaries and recent studies have stated that the current practice of transitional care in mental health is deemed to be problematic. However at the time of conducting this study, there was a paucity of literature, therefore the aim of the study was to add to the existing knowledge. The study followed a Social Constructivist grounded theory (Charmaz, 2014) approach to explore the experience of stakeholders of the transition process. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with professionals, young people and parents. There were a total of eight interviews which were transcribed and analysed. The findings present the core category as Facing the transition, with three sub- categories: Changing status, Manoeuvring the boundaries and Reflections on the process. The tentative theory explains how facing the transition involves stakeholders adjusting to the changing status of the service user. This category triggers the service transition but also describes how societal perceptions about adulthood influence the expectations placed on young people. Manoeuvring the boundaries describes and explains service transition, identifying a range of barriers and strategies to overcome these. One of the most significant barriers was identified as cultural differences between the two services. The third category describes how stakeholders make sense of their experiences, and how these are managed within the therapeutic relationship.

Cette thèse propose la reformulation et l'implantation d'une méthode simplifiée de prévision de la transition laminaire-turbulent naturelle, la méthode des paraboles. Elle s'appuie sur une base de donnée pour fournir une expression analytique des taux d'amplification de perturbations modales de la couche limite. Ces perturbations prennent naissance dans la couche limite à travers un mécanisme de réceptivité, puis connaissent une croissance linéaire suivie d'interactions non-linéaires qui conduisent à la transition vers la turbulence.La méthode du facteur-N permet la prévision de la position de transition en supposant qu'elle a lieu quand l'amplification linéaire totale d'un mode des perturbations a atteint une amplitude critique.L'amplification totale est obtenue en intégrant les taux d'amplifications des perturbations le long de la ligne de courant extérieure à la couche limite.Cette formulation intégrale n'est pas adaptée aux codes RANS et ces travaux proposent une reformulation de la méthode du facteur-N sous forme d'équation de transport, dont le terme source dépend du taux d'amplification des perturbations donné par la méthode des paraboles.Le modèle qui en résulte (N-sigma-P ou NSP) permet de déterminer si un point donné est en amont ou en aval du point de transition et ainsi de prévoir la position de transition, pour des configurations où la transition est déclenchée par des modes longitudinaux (ondes de Tollmien-Schlichting) ou transverses (crossflow). / A simplified laminar-turbulent transition prediction method (the so-called parabolas method) is recast into a RANS compatible formulation.The parabolas method is a database approach that gives an estimation of the growth rates of modal perturbations growing in the boundary layer.These perturbations rise through a process called receptivity and undergo a linear modal growth, followed by non-linear interactions that lead to a breakdown to transition. The N-factor (or e-to-N) method predicts the transition location under the assumption that transition occurs when the total linear growth of a mode reaches a prescribed threshold. This total growth is obtained via an integration of a mode's growth rate along the boundary-layer edge streamline. This classical integral formulation is not suitable in a RANS context and is therefore recast into a set of transport equations whose source terms depend on the growth rates given by the parabolas method.The resulting model (N-sigma-P or NSP) predicts if a given point in the flow field is up- or downstream of the transition location. It has been validated for cases where transition was triggered by longitudinal (Tollmien-Schlichting) and crossflow modes.
