České překlady Fitzgeraldova Velkého Gatsbyho (L. Dorůžka 1960/2011; Alexandr Tomský a Rudolf Červenka 2011; Martin Pokorný 2013) / Czech translations of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby (L. Dorůžka 1960/2011; Alexandr Tomský a Rudolf Červenka 2011; Martin Pokorný 2013)

Hřebcová, Zuzana January 2015 (has links)
The thesis focuses on modern translations of the classic American novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald within the Czech cultural setting. Initially, in accordance with Gideon Toury's (2012) descriptive model, two Czech translations will be compared in light of their functionality within the target literary canon, their dominating stylistic features will be determined and they will be assessed in terms of their acceptability or adequacy. Subsequently selected excerpts will be compared with the source text to reveal how each of the translations treats Fitzgerald's text, and in relation to these findings their shifts between acceptability and adequacy will be specified. The central goal of the thesis is to evaluate the transfer of Fitzgerald's very specific writing style, with special focus on its poetic character, lyricism and imagery. Therefore individual translation strategies will be identified and the invariant core of both of the translations will be determined. For an even more detailed explanation of the translation strategies the thesis employs the preceding translation by Lubomír Dorůžka (1960) which helps clarify the relationship between the studied translations. In conclusion all of the findings are summarized and characteristics of each of the Czech versions of Fitzgerald's The...

Rilkův román Zápisky Malta Lauridse Brigga v českých překladech / Rilke's Novel Die Aufzeichungen des Malte Laurids Brigge in Czech Translations

Dubcová, Eliška January 2013 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with two translations of Rilke's novel Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge. Each translation is not only conceived as a final product, but also as a communication process, influenced by a number of cultural and socio-political factors. The thesis therefore attempts to capture changes in Rilke's reception in relation to the literary paradigm and - with regards to the political situation - to the contemporary publisher policy, because during the period of socialism Rilke's work, which was highly valued in the thirties, came back into general awareness quite slowly in connection with the gradual liberation of cultural and political situation. The goal of the thesis is to map the problems of the translations' genesis with regards to the period and cultural environment and to the translators' poetic style. Part of the thesis addresses a translatological analysis, which is the base for defining both of the translators' methods.

Freedom of female sexuality in Calixthe Beyala's C'est le soleil qui m'a brûlée: a critical analysis in translation

Chomga, Annick Vanessa Magne January 2016 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Translation Johannesburg, March 2016 / The study provides a comparative and contrastive analysis of Calixthe Beyala’s novel, C'est le soleil qui m'a brûlée, and its translation, The Sun Hath Looked upon Me, by Marjolijn de Jager focusing on textual, paratextual and metatextual elements of these two texts. The analysis shows how the translator dealt with the disruptive stylistic effects of a postcolonial text and the themes around which the novel is centred. Problems and solutions related to postcolonial translations and relevant theories are approached in the analysis. The textual analysis is done using Gérard Genette’s (1997) model of analysis of the elements of the paratext and Vinay and Darbelnet’s (1995) model of comparative analysis of French and English. / GR2017

And yet: studio sulla traduzione di alcuni “appunti” epigrammatici di sandro penna

Unknown Date (has links)
Sandro Penna, an understudied Italian poet whose literary corpus is produced during the end period and eventual fall of Italian fascism, writes Appunti, the second volume of his major poetic corpus, from 1938-49. In it, he explicates a poetic of an unapologetic, open homoeroticism that allows one to examine the obstacles a translator faces in considering how one can remain faithful to the original poems and the identity the poet creates. Keeping in mind theoretical influences informing the creation and translation of poetry and the political choices inherent therein, my translations of these poems mediate the content and form in the target text to maintain the importance of the context in which the originals are written. This thesis and these translations aim to reexamine the importance of Penna as a poet, address the importance of translation in the establishment of foreign poets, and develop a new perspective in Translation Studies that considers the interdisciplinary applications of Gender and Sexuality Studies. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2014. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

This thesis examines one late Qing Chinese translation of Gulliver’s Travels in 1906, namely Haiwai Xuanqulu 海外軒渠錄. The study focuses on how the literary devices of satire employed in the original text were rendered into Chinese by the late Qing translators. These devices include a narrative "persona" and the "imaginary voyage" structure. It is a challenging task for the translator to fully render these literary techniques into Chinese in late Qing period when the Western and Chinese literatures were remarkably different. Through detailed text comparison and analysis, we find that, influenced by Chinese literature tradition and late Qing translation practice, the translators made changes in translation in a way that the original satirical effect was not retained in the translated work. The translation also reflects in some degree the clash and dialogue between Western and Chinese literatures. This thesis aims to explore late Qing fiction translation from the perspective of literary transmission. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / 季凌婕. / Thesis (M.Phil.)
