Soft-decision decoding of permutation codes in AWGN and fading channels

A Dissertation submitted in ful llment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering January, 2017 / Permutation codes provide the required redundancy for error correction in a noisy communication channel. Combined with MFSK modulation, the outcome produces an e cient system reliable in combating background and impulse noise in the com- munication channel. Part of this can be associated with how the redundancy scales up the amount of frequencies used in transmission. Permutation coding has also shown to be a good candidate for error correction in harsh channels such as the Powerline Communication channel. Extensive work has been done to construct permutation code books but existing decoding algorithms become impractical for large codebook sizes. This is because the algorithms need to compare the received codeword with all the codewords in the codebook used in encoding. This research therefore designs an e cient soft-decision decoder of Permutation codes. The decoder's decision mechanism does not require lookup comparison with all the codewords in the codebook. The code construction technique that derives the codebook is also irrelevant to the decoder. Results compare the decoding algorithm with Hard-decision plus Envelope Detec- tion in the Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh Fading Channels. The results show that with lesser iterations, improved error correction performance is achieved for high-rate codes. Lower rate codes require additional iterations for signi cant error correction performance. The decoder also requires much less comup- tational complexity compared with existing decoding algorithms. / MT2017

Adaptive power control as a fade countermeasure on satellite links

Satellite systems in the 20/30 GHz band are very susceptible to outages due to rain-induced fades. In order to reduce the impact of these fades, it has been proposed that the power of the uplink station transmitter be adjusted during the fade to compensate. This dissertation will explore some of the issues involved in implementing this uplink power control (ULPC). Fade slope is examined as a parameter to predict signal strength during a fade. A fade slope model based on fade physics is presented, but it strongly suggests that fade slope is not an appropriate parameter for ULPC. Real time scaling of attenuation from the downlink to the uplink shows more promise for ULPC. Differences in drop size distributions during a rain storm will result is different scaling factors. If the downlink attenuation is limited to 6 dB at 20 GHz, real time scaling can be accomplished. A scaling type ULPC algorithm driven by downlink attenuation is tested on 66 hours of OLYMPUS 20/30 GHz fade data. A similar algorithm driven by uplink attenuation is tested and the performance of the two algorithms is presented and compared. / Ph. D.

Thesis (PhD (Electrical and Electronic Engineering)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A monostatic baseband radar is required with the capability of detecting close range targets that appear at distances comparable to the system’s resolution, without compromising the radar’s maximum range. The application in borehole radar imposes further constraints associated with the physical limitations and variable electromagnetic environment of different borehole diameters and conditions. This dissertation discusses the complete design process of the analog section of a monostatic radar that successfully addresses these issues. The proposed transceiver employs a series duplexing arrangement consisting of an antenna, transmitter, receiver and an isolation switch. An exponentially decaying tail is observed in the current flowing on a borehole radar antenna when excited by pulse waveforms. The characteristics of this tail depend strongly on the borehole environment. A measurement technique is developed that accurately quantifies this exponential decay by digitizing a logarithmic representation of the antenna current while it is operating in various boreholes. Transmitters are then designed to drive these antennas with waveforms that prevent the formation of current tails. This is achieved through the use of pole-zero networks or alternatively by generating certain asymmetric, bipolar waveforms. The transmitters are simultaneously designed to have an output impedance approximating a short circuit after the transient is generated. In the series configuration proposed here, the duplexing of the antenna between transmitter and receiver is then reduced to simply isolating the receiver during transmit-mode. The switch responsible for this isolation disconnects the receiver and presents a short circuit between antenna and transmitter during transmit-mode, while connecting the receiver terminals between the antenna and the short circuited transmitter terminals in receive-mode. The required close-in performance of the transceiver dictates that the transition between these two states of the isolation switch occur in a time similar to the duration of the transmitter waveform. The switching artefacts generated by the switch are consequently similar to the radar data signal. The isolation switch employs an innovative configuration (using both transistors and diodes) which accepts a single control signal and causes the switching artefacts to be generated as a common mode signal, while a differential path is created for the radar data signal which is being switched. This leads to effective suppression of the switching signal in the signal passed to the receiver. Dissipative filtering is advocated as a fundamental design principle for high fidelity receivers and it is shown how it can be applied by using constant impedance equalizers and diplexers as basic building blocks. This principle is used as the basis for the design of this transceiver's receivers, which incorporate both standard gain blocks and operational amplifiers. A complete borehole radar system, based on the transceiver developed here, was built and tested; resulting in the first known practical monostatic borehole radar system. Data obtained in field trials are presented and suggest that the monostatic system compares well with current state of the art bi-static systems. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die behoefte is geïdentifiseer vir 'n monostatiese basisbandradar wat oor die vermoë beskik om nabygeleë teikens op 'n afstand soortgelyk aan die resolusie van die stelsel waar te neem, sonder om die maksimum bereik van die stelsel in te kort. Neural mechanism of play fighting – neural circuitry, vasopressin, and CRH – in juvenile golden hamsters

Play fighting is common in juvenile mammals as a peri-pubertal form of agonistic behavior preceding adult aggressive behavior. In golden hamsters, play fighting peaks in early puberty around postnatal day 35 (P-35), and gradually matures into adult aggression in late puberty. Though extensively studied, the neural mechanisms underlying play fighting remains poorly understood. My dissertation focuses on identifying the neural circuitry and neural transmitter systems that mediate this behavior in juvenile golden hamsters. Based on behavioral similarities between the offensive components of play fighting and adult aggression, I predicted that the neural circuitries mediating both behaviors shared common components. This possibility was tested by quantifying the immunolabeling of c-Fos expression in juvenile hamsters after the consummation of play fighting. In support of my hypothesis, I found that areas previously associated with offensive aggression in adult hamsters, including the ventrolateral hypothalamus (VLH), the posterior dorsal part of the medial amygdala (MePD), and the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST), also showed enhanced c-Fos expression after play fighting, which supported my hypothesis. Vasopressin (AVP) facilitates aggression in adult hamsters. Therefore, I hypothesized that AVP also activates play fighting. To test my hypothesis, juvenile male golden hamsters were tested for play fighting after they received central microinjections of an AVP V1A-receptor antagonist into the anterior hypothalamus (AH). Also, immunocytochemistry was performed to identify possible AVP neurons associated with this behavior. I found that the AVP antagonist selectively inhibited the attack components of play fighting in experimental animals. In addition, AVP cells in the nucleus circularis (NC) and the medial division of the supraoptic nucleus (mSON), which were associated with offensive aggression, also showed increased c-Fos activity after play fighting. Together, these results show that AVP facilitates offensive behaviors throughout hamster development, from play fighting in juveniles to aggression in adults. A recent study shows that oral administration of a CRH receptor antagonist inhibits aggression in adult hamsters. Therefore, I predicted that CRH plays a similar role in play fighting. To test my prediction, juvenile hamsters were tested for play fighting after central microinjections of a CRH receptor antagonist. I found that microinjections of the CRH receptor antagonist within the lateral septum (LS) resulted in an inhibition of several aspects of play fighting. The possible source of CRH affecting the behavior was tested through combined immunocytochemistry to CRH and c-Fos. I found CRH neurons in the diagonal band of Broca (DBB), an area with extensive connections with the LS, were particularly activated in association with play fighting. In conclusion, I find that shared neural elements participating in the “vertebrate social behavior neural network” are associated with both aggression and play fighting in hamsters. This circuitry is activated before the onset of puberty and is affected by rising levels of steroid hormones during the developmental period leading to adult behaviors. Within the circuitry, vasopressin release in the AH appears to control the activation of play fighting attacks. In contrast, CRH release in the LS affects a broader range of aspects of play fighting, including not just consummatory aspects of the behavior, but apparently also appetitive components in the form of contact duration. / text

Symbol level decoding of Reed-Solomon codes with improved reliability information over fading channels

A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, 2016 / Reliable and e cient data transmission have been the subject of current research, most especially in realistic channels such as the Rayleigh fading channels. The focus of every new technique is to improve the transmission reliability and to increase the transmission capacity of the communication links for more information to be transmitted. Modulation schemes such as M-ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (M-QAM) and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) were developed to increase the transmission capacity of communication links without additional bandwidth expansion, and to reduce the design complexity of communication systems. On the contrary, due to the varying nature of communication channels, the message transmission reliability is subjected to a couple of factors. These factors include the channel estimation techniques and Forward Error Correction schemes (FEC) used in improving the message reliability. Innumerable channel estimation techniques have been proposed independently, and in combination with di erent FEC schemes in order to improve the message reliability. The emphasis have been to improve the channel estimation performance, bandwidth and power consumption, and the implementation time complexity of the estimation techniques. Of particular interest, FEC schemes such as Reed-Solomon (RS) codes, Turbo codes, Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, Hamming codes, and Permutation codes, are proposed to improve the message transmission reliability of communication links. Turbo and LDPC codes have been used extensively to combat the varying nature of communication channels, most especially in joint iterative channel estimation and decoding receiver structures. In this thesis, attention is focused on using RS codes to improve the message reliability of a communication link because RS codes have good capability of correcting random and burst errors, and are useful in di erent wireless applications. This study concentrates on symbol level soft decision decoding of RS codes. In this regards, a novel symbol level iterative soft decision decoder for RS codes based on parity-check equations is developed. This Parity-check matrix Transformation Algorithm (PTA) is based on the soft reliability information derived from the channel output in order to perform syndrome checks in an iterative process. Performance analysis verify that this developed PTA outperforms the conventional RS hard decision decoding algorithms and the symbol level Koetter and Vardy (KV ) RS soft decision decoding algorithm. In addition, this thesis develops an improved Distance Metric (DM) method of deriving reliability information over Rayleigh fading channels for combined demodulation with symbol level RS soft decision decoding algorithms. The newly proposed DM method incorporates the channel state information in deriving the soft reliability information over Rayleigh fading channels. Analysis verify that this developed metric enhances the performance of symbol level RS soft decision decoders in comparison with the conventional method. Although, in this thesis, the performance of the developed DM method of deriving soft reliability information over Rayleigh fading channels is only veri ed for symbol level RS soft decision decoders, it is applicable to any symbol level soft decision decoding FEC scheme. Besides, the performance of the all FEC decoding schemes plummet as a result of the Rayleigh fading channels. This engender the development of joint iterative channel estimation and decoding receiver structures in order to improve the message reliability, most especially with Turbo and LDPC codes as the FEC schemes. As such, this thesis develops the rst joint iterative channel estimation and Reed- Solomon decoding receiver structure. Essentially, the joint iterative channel estimation and RS decoding receiver is developed based on the existing symbol level soft decision KV algorithm. Consequently, the joint iterative channel estimation and RS decoding receiver is extended to the developed RS parity-check matrix transformation algorithm. The PTA provides design ease and exibility, and lesser computational time complexity in an iterative receiver structure in comparison with the KV algorithm. Generally, the ndings of this thesis are relevant in improving the message transmission reliability of a communication link with RS codes. For instance, it is pertinent to numerous data transmission technologies such as Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB), Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), WiMAX, and long distance satellite communications. Equally, the developed, less computationally intensive, and performance e cient symbol level decoding algorithm for RS codes can be use in consumer technologies like compact disc and digital versatile disc. / GS2016
