Integration of dynamic data into reservoir description using streamline approaches

Integration of dynamic data is critical for reliable reservoir description and has been an outstanding challenge for the petroleum industry. This work develops practical dynamic data integration techniques using streamline approaches to condition static geological models to various kinds of dynamic data, including two-phase production history, interference pressure observations and primary production data. The proposed techniques are computationally efficient and robust, and thus well-suited for large-scale field applications. We can account for realistic field conditions, such as gravity, and changing field conditions, arising from infill drilling, pattern conversion, and recompletion, etc., during the integration of two-phase production data. Our approach is fast and exhibits rapid convergence even when the initial model is far from the solution. The power and practical applicability of the proposed techniques are demonstrated with a variety of field examples. To integrate two-phase production data, a travel-time inversion analogous to seismic inversion is adopted. We extend the method via a 'generalized travel-time' inversion to ensure matching of the entire production response rather than just a single time point while retaining most of the quasi-linear property of travel-time inversion. To integrate the interference pressure data, we propose an alternating procedure of travel-time inversion and peak amplitude inversion or pressure inversion to improve the overall matching of the pressure response. A key component of the proposed techniques is the efficient computation of the sensitivities of dynamic responses with respect to reservoir parameters. These sensitivities are calculated analytically using a single forward simulation. Thus, our methods can be orders of magnitude faster than finite-difference based numerical approaches that require multiple forward simulations. Streamline approach has also been extended to identify reservoir compartmentalization and flow barriers using primary production data in conjunction with decline type-curve analysis. The streamline 'diffusive' time of flight provides an effective way to calculate the drainage volume in 3D heterogeneous reservoirs. The flow barriers and reservoir compartmentalization are inferred based on the matching of drainage volumes from streamline-based calculation and decline type-curve analysis. The proposed approach is well-suited for application in the early stages of field development with limited well data and has been illustrated using a field example from the Gulf of Mexico.

Velocity structure of S.W. British Columbia, and N.W. Washington, from 3-D non-linear seismic tomography

This thesis applies three-dimensional (3-D) non-linear seismic tomography to image crustal/upper mantle structure of S.W. British Columbia and N.W. Washington. Two tomographic inversions are carried out including high-resolution imaging of upper crustal structure using controlled source data, and deeper imaging by simultaneous inversion of controlled source and earthquake data. Non-linear first arrival travel-time tomography is applied to controlled source data from the Seismic Hazards Investigation of Puget Sound (SHIPS) experiment conducted in 1998. Nearly 175,000 first arrival travel-times are inverted to obtain a minimum structure upper crustal velocity model to a depth of 12 km with a cubical cell size of 1 km. Results from checker-board tests for this velocity model indicate a lateral resolution of 20 km and above. The main geological and structural features in the study area are well defined by this velocity model. The structural outline of the sedimentary basins in the Straits of Georgia and Juan de Fuca are distinctly mapped. The Crescent Terrane is mapped beneath southern Vancouver Island with velocities up to 7 km/s that correlate well with the presence of gabbro in the subsurface. The northwest-southeast structural trend observed in the Strait of Georgia correlates with the observed seismicity. Shallow seismicity observed at the southern tip of Vancouver Island correlates with the location of the Leech River Fault. An earthquake tomography algorithm was developed for joint estimation of hypocentral and velocity parameters, and tested on a synthetic data set. Using this algorithm, tomographic inversion was performed simultaneously on earthquake and controlled source data from southwestern British Columbia and northwestern Washington. Approximately 15,000 first arrivals from 1,400 earthquakes and 40,000 first arrivals from the SHIPS experiment were simultaneously inverted for hypocentral parameters and velocity structure. Model resolution studies indicate a lateral resolution of 30 km and above. Upper-crustal earthquakes close to southern Vancouver Island correlate with the velocity contrasts associated with the Leech River, Southern Whidbey Island, and Darrington-Devils Mountain faults. Three mafic to ultramafic high velocity units are identified at approximately 25 km depth beneath the Crescent Terrane and above the subducting Juan de Fuca crust. The continental crust and subducting Juan de Fuca crust and mantle are well mapped. The transition zone to continental mantle occurs at 35 km depth beneath the eastern Strait of Georgia. The slab seismicity beneath the Strait of Georgia at depths >65 km lies below a low velocity zone mapped in the mantle wedge at depths of about 45–55 km. This low velocity zone may be indicative of the presence of fluids released during the phase change from basalt/gabbro to eclogite in the subducting slab. / Graduate

Neste trabalho avaliou-se a potencialidade do uso da sísmica rasa de reflexão multicomponente para investigação geológica-geotécnica. Foram abordados vários aspectos relacionados à aquisição dos dados sísmicos de reflexão multicomponente, com o objetivo de entender as vantagens e limitações do método para aplicação em investigações de subsuperfície rasa. Os ensaios de campo foram realizados em duas áreas, ambas em terrenos da Bacia Sedimentar de São Paulo, em área urbana da cidade de São Paulo. Para a interpretação dos dados sísmicos multicomponente foram investigados procedimentos para a inversão não-linear dos tempos de trânsito e das amplitudes. O testes realizados orientaram a escolha da aproximação não-hiperbólica mais apropriada para calculo dos tempos de trânsito visando à análise de velocidades do pacote acima do refletor. O estudo numérico desenvolvido para a inversão das amplitudes mostrou a viabilidade da estimativa das velocidades e densidades, acima e abaixo do refletor, empregando-se as equações de Zoeppritz para as ondas refletidas PP, PSv, SvP e SvSv, antes e depois do ângulo crítico. Dada a complexidade da inversão nao-linear das amplitudes, se fez necessário elaborar uma estratégia estocástica de otimização e desenvolver uma nova abordagem para análise da função objetivo multi-dimensional, garantindo confiabilidade ao resultado da inversão não-linear. Os resultados deste trabalho mostraram o potencial da sísmica de reflexão rasa multicomponente para caracterização geológica-geotécnica, possibilitando um melhor entendimento das camadas superficiais. / This thesis aims to evaluate the useful of the multicomponent seismic methods for shallow investigations, mainly its potential for the geotechnical and geological characterization of the nearsurface. Several aspects regarding the acquisition and processing data of multicomponent seismic data are discussed. They were based on data set acquired in the urban area of Sao Paulo city, Brazil. Two different areas were investigated. Both located in sedimentary terrains belonging to the Sao Paulo Sedimentary Basin. We present a non-linear travel time and seismic amplitude inversion scheme to quantitative interpretation of multicomponent seismic data. Several tests were performed to guide the choice of non-hyperbolic equation more suitable for travel time inversion aiming the velocity analysis above the reflector. A numerical experiment developed to solve the nonlinear inversion of seismic amplitudes showed the feasibility to estimate seismic interval velocities and layer densities above and below the reflector using the exact Zoeppritz equations for PP, PSv, SvP e SvSv reflected waves, before and after critical angle. Due to the apparent complexity of the nonlinear seismic amplitude inversion, it was necessary elaborate the strategy for stochastic optimization and develop a new approach to analyze the multi-dimensional objective function, with different implications for the accuracy and efficiency of the non-linear inversion. The study show the benefits of using the multicomponent seismic method for shallow geological-geotechnical characterization, improving the nearsurface understanding, once allows an integrated analyzes of a more complete record of the wave field.
