Turbulence modelling for horizontal axis wind turbine rotor blades

This Thesis aims to assess the reliability of turbulence models in predicting the flow fields around the horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) rotor blades and also to improve our understanding of the aerodynamics of the flow field around the blades. The simulations are validated against data from the NREL/NASA Phase VI wind turbine experiments. The simulations encompass the use of fourteen turbulence models including low-and high-Reynolds-number, linear and non-linear eddy-viscosity models and Reynolds stress models. The numerical procedure is based on the finite-volume discretization of the 3D unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations in an inertial reference frame with the sliding mesh technique to follow the motion of the rotor blades. Comparisons of power coefficient, normalised thrust, local surface pressure coefficients (CP) and the radial variation of the section average of normal force coefficients with published experimental data over a range of tip-speed ratios, lead to the identification of the turbulence models that can reliably reproduce the values of the key performance indicators. The main contributions of this study are in establishing which RANS models can produce quantitatively reliable simulations of wind turbine flows and in presenting the flow evolution over a range of operating conditions. At low (relative to the blade tip speed) wind speeds the flow over the blade surfaces remains attached and all RANS models return the correct values of key performance coefficients. At higher wind speeds there is circumferential flow separation over the downwind surface of the blade, which eventually spreads over the entire surface, Moreover, within the separation bubble the centrifugal force pumps the flow outwards, which at the higher wind speeds suppresses the formation of the classical tip vortices. More refined RANS models which do not rely on the linear effective viscosity approximation generally lead to more reliable predictions over this range of higher wind speeds. In particular the Gibson-Launder version of the Reynolds stress transport model and the high-Re versions of the Lien et al non-linear k-ε produce consistently reliable simulations over the entire range of wind speeds. By contrast some popular linear effective viscosity models, like the SST (k-ω) and the v^2-f, perform the poorest over this complex flow range. Finally all RANS models are also able to predict the dominant (lowest) frequency of the pressure fluctuations and the non-linear effective viscosity models, the Launder and Shima version of RSM and the SST are also able to return some of the higher frequencies measured.

Film Cooling, Heat Transfer and Aerodynamic Measurements in a Three Stage Research Gas Turbine

The existing 3-stage turbine research facility at the Turbomachinery Performance and Flow Research Laboratory (TPFL), Texas A and M University, is re-designed and newly installed to enable coolant gas injection on the first stage rotor platform to study the effects of rotation on film cooling and heat transfer. Pressure and temperature sensitive paint techniques are used to measure film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer on the rotor platform respectively. Experiments are conducted at three turbine rotational speeds namely, 2400rpm, 2550rpm and 3000rpm. Interstage aerodynamic measurements with miniature five hole probes are also acquired at these speeds. The aerodynamic data characterizes the flow along the first stage rotor exit, second stage stator exit and second stage rotor exit. For each rotor speed, film cooling effectiveness is determined on the first stage rotor platform for upstream stator-rotor gap ejection, downstream discrete hole ejection and a combination of upstream gap and downstream hole ejection. Upstream coolant ejection experiments are conducted for coolant to mainstream mass flow ratios of MFR=0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0% and downstream discrete hole injection tests corresponding to average hole blowing ratios of M = 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75 and 2.0 for each turbine speed. To provide a complete picture of hub cooling under rotating conditions, experiments with simultaneous injection of coolant gas through upstream and downstream injection are conducted for an of MFR=1% and Mholes=0.75, 1.0 and 1.25 for the three turbine speeds. Heat transfer coefficients are determined on the rotor platform for similar upstream and downstream coolant injection. Rotation is found to significantly affect the distribution of coolant on the platform. The measured effectiveness magnitudes are lower than that obtained with numerical simulations. Coolant streams from both upstream and downstream injection orient themselves towards the blade suction side. Passage vortex cuts-off the coolant film for the lower MFR for upstream injection. As the MFR increases, the passage vortex effects are diminished. Effectiveness was maximum when Mholes was closer to one as the coolant ejection velocity is approximately equal to the mainstream relative velocity for this blowing ratio. Heat transfer coefficient and film cooling effectiveness increase with increasing rotational speed for upstream rotor stator gap injection while for downstream hole injection the maximum effectiveness and heat transfer coefficients occur at the reference speed of 2550rpm.

Analysis and optimisation of a novel wind turbine

The technologies of urban wind turbines have been rapidly developed in recent years, but urban wind turbines have not found a wide application due to the limitations of their designs. The power output of urban wind turbine is significantly affected by urban terrain, which can cause low speed flow with frequent change of its direction. Thus, there is a need for a new wind turbine to meet the requirements of an urban wind turbine. In this study, a novel wind turbine for urban areas was designed and developed. The investigations of the novel urban wind turbine were carried out by using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations and wind tunnel tests. The results from the investigation have shown that the novel wind turbine has a great potential to harvest wind energy in urban areas. A detailed study of effects of each parameter on wind energy concentration of the novel wind turbine was carried out with CFD simulations. According to the simulation results, the shroud structure of the novel wind turbine was modified and the dimensions of the final structure were identified. It was determined that the capability of wind energy concentration of the novel wind turbine shroud has been significantly improved through the structure optimisations. Furthermore, guide vane and impulse turbine were implemented in the novel wind turbine. The flow characteristics through the guide vane was studied and discussed. It was found that the wind flow characteristics can be properly modified by implementing guide vane and the structure of impulse turbine was suitable to be implemented in the novel wind turbine due to the flow characteristic through the guide vane.

Advanced Instrumentation and Measurements Techniques for Near Surface Flows

The development of aerodynamic boundary layers on wind turbine blades is an important consideration in their performance. It can be quite challenging to replicate full scale conditions in laboratory experiments, and advanced diagnostics become valuable in providing data not available from traditional means. A new variant of Doppler global velocimetry (DGV) known as cross-correlation DGV is developed to measure boundary layer profiles on a wind turbine blade airfoil in the large scale Virginia Tech Stability Wind Tunnel. The instrument provides mean velocity vectors with reduced sensitivity to external conditions, a velocity measurement range from 0ms^-1 to over 3000ms^-1, and an absolute uncertainty. Monte Carlo simulations with synthetic signals reveal that the processing routine approaches the Cramér-Rao lower bound in optimized conditions. A custom probe-beam technique is implanted to eliminate laser flare for measuring boundary layer profiles on a DU96-W-180 wind turbine airfoil model. Agreement is seen with laser Doppler velocimetry data within the uncertainty estimated for the DGV profile. Lessons learned from the near-wall flow diagnostics development were applied to a novel benchmark model problem incorporating the relevant physical mechanisms of the high amplitude periodic turbulent flow experienced by turbine blades in the field. The model problem is developed for experimentally motivated computational model development. A circular cylinder generates a periodic turbulent wake, in which a NACA 63215b airfoil with a chord Reynolds number Re_c = 170, 000 is embedded for a reduced frequency k = (pi)fc/V = 1.53. Measurements are performed with particle image velocimetry on the airfoil suction side and in highly magnified planes within the boundary layer. Outside of the viscous region, the Reynolds stress profile is consistent with the prediction of Rapid Distortion Theory (RDT), confirming that the redistribution of normal stresses is an inviscid effect. The fluctuating component of the phase- averaged turbulent boundary layer profiles is described using the exact solution to laminar Stokes flow. A phase lag similar to that in laminar flow is observed with an additional constant phase layer in the buffer region. The phase lag is relevant for modeling the intermittent transition and separation expected at full scale. / Ph. D.

Coupled computational fluid dynamics/multibody dynamics method with application to wind turbine simulations

A high fidelity approach coupling the computational fluid dynamics method (CFD) and multi-body dynamics method (MBD) is presented for aero-servo-elastic wind turbine simulations. The approach uses the incompressible CFD dynamic overset code CFDShip-Iowa v4.5 to compute the aerodynamics, coupled with the MBD code Virtual.Lab Motion to predict the motion responses to the aerodynamic loads. The IEC 61400-1 ed. 3 recommended Mann wind turbulence model was implemented in this thesis into the code CFDShip-Iowa v4.5 as boundary and initial conditions, and used as the explicit wind turbulence for CFD simulations. A drivetrain model with control systems was implemented in the CFD/MBD framework for investigation of drivetrain dynamics. The tool and methodology developed in this thesis are unique, being the first time with complete wind turbine simulations including CFD of the rotor/tower aerodynamics, elastic blades, gearbox dynamics and feedback control systems in turbulent winds. Dynamic overset CFD simulations were performed with the benchmark experiment UAE phase VI to demonstrate capabilities of the code for wind turbine aerodynamics. The complete turbine geometry was modeled, including blades and approximate geometries for hub, nacelle and tower. Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) and Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) turbulence models were used in the simulations. Results for both variable wind speed at constant blade pitch angle and variable blade pitch angle at fixed wind speed show that the CFD predictions match the experimental data consistently well, including the general trends for power and thrust, sectional normal force coefficients and pressure coefficients at different sections along the blade. The implemented Mann wind turbulence model was validated both theoretically and statistically by comparing the generated stationary wind turbulent field with the theoretical one-point spectrum for the three components of the velocity fluctuations, and by comparing the expected statistics from the simulated turbulent field by CFD with the explicit wind turbulence inlet boundary from the Mann model. The proposed coupled CFD/MBD approach was applied to the conceptual NREL 5MW offshore wind turbine. Extensive simulations were performed in an increasing level of complexity to investigate the aerodynamic predictions, turbine performance, elastic blades, wind shear and atmospheric wind turbulence. Comparisons against the publicly available OC3 simulation results show good agreements between the CFD/MBD approach and the OC3 participants in time and frequency domains. Wind turbulence/turbine interaction was examined for the wake flow to analyze the influence of turbulent wind on wake diffusion. The Gearbox Reliability Collaborative project gearbox was up-scaled in size and added to the NREL 5MW turbine with the purpose of demonstrating drivetrain dynamics. Generator torque and blade pitch controllers were implemented to simulate realistic operational conditions of commercial wind turbines. Interactions between wind turbulence, rotor aerodynamics, elastic blades, drivetrain dynamics at the gear-level and servo-control dynamics were studied, showing the potential of the methodology to study complex aerodynamic/mechanic systems.

This master thesis concerns about problematics of wind turbines. The document summarizes basic theory based on the law of momentum conservation which is essential tool for the design and calculation of wind turbines. The theory is complemented by number of correction factors and then used in the design of wind turbine for specific parameters. The calculation is performed iteratively using Matlab software and the actual code is given in appendix. Graphs summarizing the progress of various units along the blades are presented in the document. The final section briefly describes advanced topics of aerodynamics concerning other important factors that the field of wind energy deal with in recent time.
