Optimal investment in an oil-based economy : theoretical and empirical study of a Ramsey-type model for Libya

In a developing oil-based economy like Libya the availability of finance is largely affected by the availability of oil revenues which are subjected to disturbances and shocks. Therefore, the decision to save and invest a certain ratio of the country's aggregate output is, to large extent, determined (and affected) by the shocks in the oil markets rather than the requirements of economic development. In this study an attempt is made to determine the optimal rate of saving and investment, both defined as a ratio of the aggregate output, according to the requirements of economic development. For this purpose, a neo-classical Ramsey-type model for Libya is constructed and applied to obtain theoretically and empirically the optimal saving and investment rate during the period (1965-1991). The results reveal that Libya was investing over the optimal level during the oil boom of 1970s and less than the optimal level during the oil crisis of 1980s. In addition, an econometric investigation of the determinants of actual investment by sector (agriculture, non-oil industry, and services) is carried out in order to shed lights on how possible it is for Libya to adjust actual investment towards its optimal level. It is found that, as expected, the most important factor which can be used in this respect is the oil revenues or, generally, the availability of finance. In addition, the study reveals that investment in agriculture is associated, during the period of study, with a very low marginal productivity of capital whereas marginal productivity was higher in both non-oil industry and services. Finally, the study investigates also the future potential saving and investment rates and concludes that the economy, which has already reached its steady state, can be pushed out towards further growth if the economy can be able to increase the level of per worker human capital, proxied by the secondary school enrolment as a percentage of population.

Modelling the evolution dynamics of the academic performance in high school in Spain. Probabilistic predictions of future trends and their economical consequences

En esta tesis, se utilizan t ecnicas matem atico-epidemiol ogicas para modelar el rendimiento acad emico en Espa~na (prestando especial atenci on en el fracaso escolar) para comprender mejor los mecanismos detr as de esta importante cuesti on, as como para predecir c omo evolucionar an los resultados acad emicos en el Bachillerato espa~nol en los pr oximos a~nos. El nivel educativo de Bachillerato en Espa~na est a formado por los dos ultimos cursos antes de acceder a la universidad o al mercado de trabajo y corresponde a los estudiantes de 16 18 a~nos. Este nivel educativo es muy importante para la formaci on de los estudiantes ya que representa un periodo en el que deber an tomar importantes decisiones sobre el futuro acad emico y profesional. En primer lugar, en el Cap tulo 2, se presenta un modelo determinista donde se analiza el rendimiento acad emico asumiendo que la actitud negativa de los alumnos de Bachillerato puede ser debida a su comportamiento aut onomo y la in uencia de compa~neros con malos resultados acad emicos. Luego, en el Cap tulo 3, se mejora el modelo basado en la idea de que no s olo los malos h abitos acad emicos se transmiten socialmente sino tambi en los buenos h abitos de estudio. Adem as, descomponemos los par ametros de transmisi on de h abitos acad emicos con el n de analizar con m as detalle qu e grupos de estudiantes son m as susceptibles a ser in uenciados por compa~neros con buenos o malos h abitos acad emicos. El abandono escolar tambi en han sido incluido en este modelo. El enfoque adoptado permite proporcionar predicciones deterministas y con intervalos de con anza de la evoluci on del rendimiento escolar (incluyendo las tasas de abandono) en Bachillerato en Espa~na en los pr oximos a~nos. Este enfoque, adem as, nos permite modelar el rendimiento acad emico en otros niveles educativos del sistema acad emico espa~nol o de fuera de Espa~na tal y como se muestra en el Cap tulo 4, donde el modelo se aplica satisfactoriamente al sistema acad emico actual de la regi on alemana de Renania del Norte-Westfalia. Para concluir esta tesis, proporcionamos una estimaci on de los costes relacionados con el rendimiento acad emico espa~nol basado en nuestras predicciones. Esta estimaci on representa la inversi on en Bachillerato por parte del Gobierno espa~nol y las familias en los pr oximos a~nos, con especial atenci on en los grupos de estudiantes que no promocionan y abandonan en los diferentes cursos acad emicos. / In this dissertation, we use epidemiologic-mathematical techniques to model the academic performance in Spain (paying special attention on the academic underachievement) to understand better the mechanisms behind this important issue as well as to predict how academic results will evolve in the Spanish Bachillerato over the next few years. The Spanish Bachillerato educational level is made up of the last courses before accessing to the university or to the work market and corresponds to students of 16¿18 years old. This educational level is a milestone in the career training of students because it represents a period to make important decisions about academic and professional future. In a rst step, in the Chapter 2 we will present a deterministic model where academic performance is analyzed assuming the negative attitude of Bachillerato students may be due to their autonomous behavior and the in uence of classmates with bad academic results. Then, in the Chapter 3, the model is improved based on the idea that not only the bad academic habits are socially transmitted but also the good study habits. Besides, we decompose the transmission academic habits into good and bad academic habits, in order to analyze with more detail which group of students are more susceptible to be in uenced by good or bad academic students. The consideration of quantifying the abandon rates is also a new issue dealt with in it. The adopted approach allow to provide both punctual and con dence intervals predictions to the evolution of academic performance (including the abandon rates) in Bachillerato in Spain over the next few years. The adopted approach allows us to model academic performance in academic levels other than Bachillerato and/or beyond the Spanish academic system. This issue is assessed in Chapter 4, where the model is satisfactorily applied to the current academic system of the German region of North Rhine-Westphalia. To conclude this dissertation, we provide an estimation of the cost related to the Spanish academic underachievement based on our predictions. This estimation represents the investment in the Spanish Bachillerato from the Spanish Government and families over the next few years, paying special attention on the groups of students who do not promote and abandon during their corresponding academic year. / Sánchez Sánchez, A. Inactivation of Microorganisms by Photocatalysis

Photocatalysis is an advanced oxidation process, which has shown to possess an enhanced capability to remove a wide range of contaminants. It involves the use of a semiconductor photocatalyst and a photon source. Photocatalysis has several advantages such as mild reaction conditions like ambient temperature and pressure, good control over the reaction and faster reaction kinetics. Semiconductor photocatalysts such as TiO2, ZnO, Fe2O3, CdS, ZnS, etc. absorbs light of energy greater than or equal to its band gap and the electron in the valence band gets excited to conduction band leaving behind the hole in valence band. These charge carrier pair results in the formation of various reactive oxygen species such as hydroxyl and superoxide radicals which results in the degradation of chemical contaminants and inactivation of microorganisms. TiO2 is the most widely used catalyst in photocatalytic studies because of its high photocatalytic activity, non-toxicity and wide availability. Anatase phase TiO2 has been reported to possess higher photocatalytic activity than the rutile phase. Although there are several methods to synthesize TiO2, solution combustion synthesis is a single step process to produce pure anatase phase TiO2. The catalyst produced by this method has been shown to be superior to the commercially available Degussa P-25 catalyst for the degradation of various chemical contaminants. The present investigation focuses on the use of combustion synthesized catalyst for the inactivation of microorganisms. The photocatalytic activity was compared with commercial Degussa P-25 catalyst. The various aspects of photocatalytic inactivation reactions studied in this dissertation are: i) photocatalytic inactivation of microorganisms in presence of UV light, ii) effect of various parameters on the inactivation, iii) photocatalytic inactivation in presence of visible light, iv) use of immobilized catalyst for the photocatalytic inactivation, v) understanding of mechanism and kinetics of inactivation. Combustion synthesized TiO2 (CS-TiO2), combustion synthesized 1% Ag substituted TiO2 (Ag/TiO2 (Sub)) and 1% Ag impregnated CS-TiO2 (Ag/TiO2 (Imp)) were used as photocatalysts. The catalysts were characterized by powder XRD, TEM, BET surface area, UV-Vis spectroscopy, TGA and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The photocatalytic inactivation experiments were carried out using E. coli (K-12 MG 1655), a bacterial strain and P. pastoris (X-33), a yeast strain, as model microorganisms. The results demonstrate higher photocatalytic activity of all the combustion synthesized catalysts than commercial Degussa P-25 catalyst. The optimum catalyst concentration was 0.25 g/L and the maximum inactivation was observed in the presence of Ag/TiO2 (Imp) catalyst. Rapid and complete inactivation of the microorganisms was observed at lower initial cell concentrations. A reduced photocatalytic inactivation was observed in presence of various anions (HCO3¯ , SO4 2¯ , Cl¯ and NO3¯ ) and cations (Na, K, Caand Mg). Even a small addition of H2O2 was observed to improve the photocatalytic inactivation. At higher dosage of H2O2, a 2 min exposure was sufficient to result in a complete inactivation. Changing the initial pH of the solution was observed to have no significant effect on the photocatalytic inactivation. All the combustion synthesized catalysts showed higher activity as compared to those obtained with commercial Degussa P-25 TiO2 in presence of visible light. The higher photocatalytic activity of combustion synthesized TiO2 can be attributed to the lesser crystallite size, higher surface area, large amount of hydroxyl groups and decreased band-gap energy of the catalyst. The present study demonstrates the potential use of catalyst immobilized thin films for the photocatalytic inactivation of E. coli in the presence of UV light. The CS-TiO2 catalyst was immobilized on glass substrate by LbL deposition technique. The performance of immobilized CS-TiO2 was compared to commercial Degussa Aeroxide TiO2 P-25 (Aeroxide) catalyst. The effect of various operating parameters like catalyst loading, surface area and number of bilayers on inactivation has been investigated. It was observed that increasing the number of bilayers and the concentration did not influence the inactivation but increased surface area led to an increase in inactivation. It was observed that the catalyst immobilized on glass slides can be used for repeated experimental cycles with the same efficiency. It was observed that the inactivation process can be studied in continuous mode by using catalyst immobilized on glass beads. The work also focused attention towards understanding the microorganism inactivation mechanism and kinetic aspects. Various microscopy techniques such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to study the inactivation mechanism. From the images obtained, it was suggested that the inactivation is caused due to rupture of cell wall. The mechanism was also examined by carrying out degradation experiments on cell component such as protein and media component such as dextrose. UV alone was observed to degrade protein and the presence of catalyst showed no additional effect. On the other hand, dextrose does not respond to photocatalytic degradation even at a lower concentration. The photocatalytic degradation of Orange G dye was reduced by addition of dextrose sugar or protein which shows a possibility of competitive degradation. The kinetics of inactivation was studied by various models available in literature such as the power-law model, Chick-Watson model, modified Hom model, GInaFIT tool and a Langmuir-Hinshelwood type model. It was observed that power-law based kinetic model showed good agreement with the experimental data. A mechanistic Langmuir-Hinshelwood type model was also observed to model the inactivation reactions with certain assumptions.

Etude numérique de la transformation des vagues en zone littorale, de la zone de levée aux zones de surf et de jet de rive

Dans cette thèse, nous introduisons un nouveau modèle instationnaire de vagues valable de la zone de levée à la zone de jet de rive adapté à l'étude de la submersion. Le modèle est basé sur les équations de Serre Green-Naghdi (S-GN), dont l'application à la zone de surf reste un domaine de recherche ouvert. Nous proposons une nouvelle approche pour gérer le déferlement dans ce type de modèle, basée sur la représentation des fronts déferlés par des chocs. Cette approche a été utilisée avec succès pour les modèles basés sur les équations de Saint-Venant (SV) et permet une description simple et efficace du déferlement et des mouvements de la ligne d'eau. Dans ces travaux, nous cherchons à étendre le domaine de validité du modèle SV SURF-WB (Marche et al. 2007) vers la zone de levée en incluant les termes dispersifs propres aux équations de S-GN. Des basculements locaux vers les équations de SV au niveau des fronts permettent alors aux vagues de déferler et dissiper leur énergie. Le modèle obtenu, appelé SURF-GN, est validé à l'aide de données de laboratoire correspondant à différents types de vagues incidentes et de plages. Il est ensuite utilisé pour analyser la dynamique des fronts d'ondes longues de type tsunami en zone littorale. Nous montrons que SURF-GN peut décrire les différents types de fronts, d'ondulé non-déferlé à purement déferlé. Les conséquences de la transformation d'une onde de type tsunami en train d'ondulations lors de la propagation sur une plage sont ensuite considérées. Nous présentons finalement une étude de la célérité des vagues déferlées, basée sur les données de la campagne de mesure in-situ ECORS Truc-Vert 2008. L'influence des non-linéarités est en particulier quantifiée. / In this thesis, we introduce a new numerical model able to describe wave transformation from the shoaling to the swash zones, including overtopping. This model is based on Serre Green-Naghdi equations, which are the basic fully nonlinear Boussinesq-type equations. These equations can accurately describe wave dynamics prior to breaking, but their application to the surf zone usually requires the use of complex parameterizations. We propose a new approach to describe wave breaking in S-GN models, based on the representation of breaking wave fronts as shocks. This method has been successfully applied to the Nonlinear Shallow Water (NSW) equations, and allows for an easy treatment of wave breaking and shoreline motions. However, the NSW equations can only be applied after breaking. In this thesis, we aim at extending the validity domain of the NSW model SURF-WB (Marche et al. 2007) to the shoaling zone by adding the S-GN dispersive terms to the governing equations. Local switches to NSW equations are then performed in the vicinity of the breaking fronts, allowing for the waves to break and dissipate their energy. Extensive validations using laboratory data are presented. The new model, called SURF-GN, is then applied to study tsunami-like undular bore dynamics in the nearshore. The model ability to describe bore dynamics for a large range of Froude number is first demonstrated, and the effects of the bore transformation on wave run-up over a sloping beach are considered. We finally present an in-situ study of broken wave celerity, based on the ECORS-Truc Vert 2008 field experiment. In particular, we quantify the effects of non-linearities and evaluate the predictive ability of several non-linear celerity models.

Magnetické fáze umělého spinového ledu na čtvercové mřížce / Magnetic phases in an artificial realization of the square ice model

Umělé spinové systémy jsou vhodným nástrojem pro zkoumání a ovlivňování neobvyklých exotických nízko-energiových stavů přímo v reálném prostoru. Experimentální realizace těchto systémů jsou založeny na výrobě vzájemně interagujících nano-magnetů uspořádaných do požadované geometrie. Prvním a asi i nejvíce studovaným umělým systémem je prostá čtvercová mřížka. V této práci se zabýváme modifikováním této čtvercové geometrie, které umožní zachycení různých magnetických fází založených na modelech ledu. Výsledky ukazují, že vhodným nastaveném této modifikace lze realizovat různé magnetické fáze, včetně neuspořádané spinové kapalné fáze s uvězněnými magnetickými kvazičásticemi (magnetickými monopóly).

Applications de la théorie du Contrôle Optimal aux problématiques du diabète et de la propagation de la rumeur sur les réseaux sociaux / Applications of the Optimal Control theory to problems of diabetes and the spread of rumor on social networks

L'objectif de cette thèse est principalement d'appliquer la théorie du contrôle optimal à des problématiques que soulèvent la maladie du diabète et celle de la propagation de la rumeur sur les réseaux sociaux.Pour la première application, à savoir la maladie du diabète, nous développons deux études. Dans une première étude, à un modèle qui examine les diabétiques avec et sans complications, nous associons un problème de contrôle optimal. Nous montrons qu'il n'existe pas de comportement cyclique entre le groupe des diabétiques avec complications et celui des diabétiques sans complications, et que le point d'équilibre associé au problème existe et est un point selle. Dans une seconde étude, nous modifions un modèle de glucose-insuline à temps différé par l'ajout d'actions extérieures avec retard. Puis, pour minimiser la glycémie d'un diabétique, nous les contrôlons séparément puis simultanément, afin d'en donner une caractérisation à l'aide du principe du maximum de Pontryagin.Pour la deuxième application, la problématique de la propagation de la rumeur sur les réseaux sociaux, nous proposons aussi deux approches. Premièrement, nous mettons en place des stratégies optimales, par l'ajout d'actions extérieures sur un modèle d'e-rumeur de type SIR que nous contrôlons séparément puis simultanément, pour minimiser la propagation d'une fausse information. Et, dans une deuxième approche, nous construisons un nouveau modèle d'e-rumeur pour lequel nous étudions les points d'équilibres admissibles en mettant en évidence leurs conditions de stabilité, ainsi que les critères de persistance du modèle. / The aim of this thesis is mainly to apply optimal control theory to problems raised by diabetes disease and the spread of rumors on social networks.For the first application, namely diabetes disease, we develop two studies. In a first one, from a model that examines diabetics with and without complications, we associate an optimal control problem. We show that there is no cyclical behavior between the group of diabetics with complications and the one without complications, and that the associated equilibrium point exists and is a saddle point. In a second study, we modify a model of delayed glucose-insulin by adding external actions with delay. Then, in order to minimize the glycemia of a diabetic, we control them separately and simultaneously in order to give a characterization of the optimal actions with the Pontryagin maximum principle.For the second application, the issue of spreading rumors on social networks, we also give two approaches. First, we introduce some optimal strategies, by adding external actions on a e-rumor model of SIR type that we control separately and simultaneously to minimize the spread of fake news. Then, in a second approach, we build a new e-rumor model for which we study the admissible equilibrium points by highlighting their stability conditions, as well as the criteria of persistence of the model.

Développement d’un modèle in vitro de la barrière hémato-encéphalique

La barrière hémato-encéphalique (BHE) est une structure retrouvée au niveau des capillaires cérébraux. Elle représente un véritable obstacle pour les actifs qui doivent se rendre au cerveau pour y exercer un effet pharmacologique. Durant les étapes du développement du médicament, des modèles cellulaires in vitro sont utilisés pour l’évaluation de la perméabilité au cerveau des nouveaux médicaments. Le modèle assemblé avec des cellules endothéliales (CEs) isolées des capillaires des cerveaux de souris présente un intérêt particulier pour la recherche en raison de sa facilité d’obtention et sa pertinence pour le criblage des médicaments. Le but de ce projet a été de construire et de caractériser un modèle monocouche de CEs primaires de souris. En parallèle, un modèle monocouche de la lignée murine b.End3 a été investigué. L’évaluation de ces modèles a été basée sur les valeurs de TEER et de perméabilité aux marqueurs fluorescents, ainsi que sur la présence des protéines spécifiques de la BHE. La validation du modèle a été établie par la corrélation des résultats de perméabilité obtenus avec le modèle développé (in vitro) avec ceux obtenus chez la souris (in vivo). L’intégrité et l’expression des protéines spécifiques de la BHE du modèle primaire se sont montrées supérieures au modèle bEnd.3. La corrélation in vitro/in vivo du modèle primaire a abouti à un r2 = 0,765 comparé au r2 = 0,019 pour le modèle bEnd.3. Ce travail de recherche montre que le modèle primaire monocouche issu de cellules endothéliales cérébrales de souris est un modèle simple et fiable pour la prédiction de la perméabilité des actifs à travers la BHE. / The blood-brain barrier (BBB), a central nervous system structure, is found in the cerebral capillaries. It represents a major obstacle for the drugs that have to reach the brain in order to exercise their pharmacological effect. In the early stages of the drug development, in vitro cell models are used to evaluate the brain permeability of new drugs. Models assembled using primary endothelial cells (ECs) isolated from mouse brain capillaries are of particular interest for research, as for their ease of obtaining and relevance for the drug screening. Thus, the goal of this project was to build and characterize a primary mouse monolayer model. At the same time, a murine b.End3 cell line monolayer model was investigated. The evaluation of these models was based on the TEER and fluorescent marker permeability values, as well as on the presence of the BBB hallmark proteins. The model validation was established by the correlation of the permeability data obtained with the in vitro model and the data obtained in mice (in vivo). As a result, the primary mouse model showed superior monolayer integrity and higher expression of the tight junction and membrane transporter proteins when compared with the bEnd.3 cell line model. The in vitro/in vivo correlation of the primary model resulted in r2 = 0.765 compared to the bEnd.3 model with r2 = 0.019. This research work shows that the primary monolayer mouse model is a simple and reliable model for predicting the drug permeability across the BBB.
