Early Àbbāsid religious policies and the proto-Sunnī ùlamā'

Zaman, Muhammad Qasim January 1994 (has links)
This dissertation studies the evolving relationship of the early 'Abbasid caliphs with the proto-Sunni 'ulama'. By the time of Harun al-Rashid, the 'Abbasids had aligned themselves with the emergent proto-Sunnitrends; a pattern of state - 'ulama' relations, with the caliph's view of his function approaching that of the 'ulama ', had begun to emerge. al-Ma'mun was uncharacteristic of the early 'Abbasids in claiming religious authority for himself, apparently to challenge the 'ulama's influence and authority. That effort proved abortive, and confirmed in its failure the earlier pattern of state - 'ulama' relations. The pattern was one of collaboration between the caliphs and the 'ulama'. Proto-Sunni scholars were among the beneficiaries of extensive caliphal patronage, and it was their viewpoints which caliphal interventions in religious life upheld. Owing perhaps to the effects of 'Abbasid patronage, but also to the implications of certain proto-Sunni viewpoints, proto-Sunnis were generally favourable towards the 'Abbasids. A convergence is discernible in the interests of the Caliphs and the 'ulama', and partly explains not only the latter's pro-'Abbasid sentiment but also why it was the proto-Sunni viewpoints that the 'Abbasids came to patronize.

Intellectuals Of Varied State Traditions: The Ottoman Empire And The Volga-ural Region

Karahasanoglu, Selim 01 March 2004 (has links) (PDF)
I intend to analyze in the present study, the status of the intellectuals under varied state traditions. The Volga-Ural region was under the legacy of Chinggis Khan. In the thirteenth century with the invasion of Mongol-Tatar groups under the leadership of Chinggis Khan&amp / #65533 / s grandchild Batu Khan, the Volga-Bulghar state was removed and the Golden Horde was founded. By the collapse period of the Golden Horde at the end of the 14th century and at the beginning of the 15th century, the Khanates period began in the region: Kazan, Astrakhan and Kasim. The struggles among the khanates were used by Russia in her favor and these problems paved the way for inclusion of the region under Russian hegemony. Especially after the collapse of Kazan in 1552, a long period of Russianization and Christianization took place. In the Volga-Ural region, where there was no Islamic state, one observes a deep impact of Turco Mongol political culture, in which distributive economics based on power-sharing mechanisms prevailed, and a lively exchange of ideas among the intellectuals as well as conflicts and clashes became the norm. The Ottoman Empire, on the other hand, was formed with conquests and ideological aggregation, which led to a concentration of powr in the state. In such an environment, dynastic ideology determined the borders of intellectual life and the ways of expression of ideas. In the present study, my concern is on more on the interference of the state in the intellectual life.

Faith, Moral Authority, and Politics; The Making of Progressive Islam in Indonesia

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: Several Islamic organizations have experience major changes in their theological frames and political identities away from fundamentalist and revivalist theological orientation to one that embraces a progressive Islamic theology that synthesizes these norms with classical Islamic teachings. What are the factors that explain these theological changes? What are the causal mechanisms that help to promote them? Using the moral authority leadership theory, I argue that Islamic groups would be able to change their theological frames and political identities if the changes are promoted by religious leaders with 'moral authority' status, who are using both ideational and instrumental strategies to reconstruct the theological frames of their organizations. In addition to moral authority leadership, intermediary variables that also affect the likelihood of a theological change within Islamic groups are the institutional culture of the organization - the degree of tolerance for non-Islamic theological teachings - and the relationship between the Islamic group and the state. This study is a comparative historical analysis of two Indonesian Islamic groups: the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and the Muhammadiyah. It finds that the NU was able to successfully change its theological positions due to the presence of a charismatic moral authority leader, the tolerant institutional culture within the organization, and the ability of the organization to ally with the Suharto regime, allowing the reform to be institutionalized with little intervention from the regime. On the other hand, theological reform within the Muhammadiyah was not successful due to the lack of a leader with moral authority status who could have led the reforms within the organization, as well as to the dominance of a revivalist institutional culture that does not tolerate any challenges to their interpretation of Islamic theology. The analysis makes theoretical contributions on the role of religious leadership within Islamic movements and the likelihood of Islamic groups to adopt liberal political norms such as democracy, religion-state separation, and tolerance toward religious minorities. It identifies the mechanisms in which theological change within Islamic group become possible. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Political Science 2012
