Transformation of waste landscape in Shanghai : progressive reclamation of obselescent lilong housing

Yu, Zhiqing, 于之清 January 2012 (has links)
Shanghai has experienced rapid urbanization over the past three decades, accompanied by large-scale economic development. The spatial structure and landscape of Shanghai has been significantly transformed due to this urbanization and decentralization process. As the byproduct of urbanization process, the creation of all kinds of “wastes”( including actual waste as well as some waste or wasteful places) are an inevitable effect of urban growth which sustain our activities of growth. As a result, these “wastes” have caused a number of negative impacts on the environment, natural resources, human health, social and economic issues. The objective of this thesis project is to explore the potentials embed in those waste landscape in terms of landscape intervention as well as update our understanding and redefine the roles of those areas in the process of urbanization. How landscape as a medium to construct the city and how to redefine and reclaim waste landscape that in order to propose sustainable urbanization in Shanghai would also be explored and reflected from this thesis project. / published_or_final_version / Architecture / Master / Master of Landscape Architecture

Establishing local identity through planning and landscape design in urban waterfront development

Liu, Huirong 10 May 2013 (has links)
In an increasingly globalized world, emphasis on attracting investment, talent and tourists has resulted in similar iconic urban landscapes in cities. This has increased concerns on the reduction or complete loss of local identity along urban waterfronts. This study aimed to develop a set of design guidelines that contribute to the establishment of local identity on urban waterfronts. The research focused on the history and current status of urban waterfront development, globalization impacts on urban landscape, notions of place identity and place making. It defined local identity as one type of place identity and explored the key aspects that foster local identity in waterfront development. A case study was conducted by analyzing these key aspects in a successful waterfront development. From a synthesis of the findings, a set of design guidelines was developed and then tested on an unsuccessful project; recommendations for future improvement were based on the developed guidelines.

Kazakh Capitals and the Construction of Kazakh Identity in the post-Soviet Period

Shelekpayev, Nariman January 2013 (has links)
Kazakh Capitals and the Construction of Kazakh National Identity in the post-Soviet Period (1991-2011) Nariman Shelekpayev This thesis explores the urban landscapes of the two major cities in post-Soviet Kazakhstan: Astana and Almaty. Analysis of their urban architecture, organization of public spaces and toponymy provides information about the identity and the identification of the country in the twenty-first century. The main sources for this research are the texts produced by geographers, graphic representations (mainly photographs and postcards) and several textbooks on the "History of Kazakhstan". The primary research questions include how historical and political change (mainly the transition from Soviet to national in 1990s) influenced the urban landscape, the role of the urban landscape in construction of national (self-) identification, and what symbolizes "Kazakhness". From the temporal point of view, the study attempts a diachronic comparison of Soviet and post-Soviet Kazakhstan. From the spatial point of view, the analysis of the urban landscape in two cities located in different parts of the country with different history and geography helps to see different, heterogeneous territories which are part of one country. Astana is the capital of Kazakhstan, a city with the sharpest contrasts between...

Schützer, Kléber 26 October 2010 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-06-02T20:00:35Z (GMT).
