Relationships Between Non-Destructive Tests, Breaking Strength, and Stiffness of Wood Crossarms

Catchot, Tyler Russell 11 December 2015 (has links)
Wood crossarms provide an efficient economical, structural, and sustainable solution to the distribution and transmission of electric utilities. The majority of these crossarms are made from two species of wood, Douglasir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and southern pine (Pinus spp.). In this study 210 solid-sawn wood crossarms (120 pieces of Douglasir/ 90 pieces of southern pine) were evaluated with non-destructive (NDTs) and destructive testing to determine if NDT could be used to predict crossarm performance. Three NDTs were conducted. Subsequently, destructive testing in which each specimen was broken in accordance to ASTM D-198 for modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) was performed. After testing each specimen the non-destructive data was compared to the destructive testing results by mean comparisons and correlations. In this study it was found that the E-computer (NDT) produced the strongest correlation in both species to destructive values, especially MOE.

Impact of Integrated Vegetation Management Practices on Green Antelopehorn Milkweed (Asclepias Viridis Walter) in Right-Of-Ways and Forages

Thorne, Nolan Hendrix 14 December 2018 (has links)
Common integrated vegetation management (IVM) practices including herbicide and mowing applications on right-of-ways and forages were evaluated on green antelopehorn populations near Starkville, MS. Live stems in each plot were counted prior to treatment application and approximately one year after treatment (YAT). Analysis of the stem counts 1YAT indicated aminopyralid+metsulfuron, imazapyr, picloram+2,4-D, maximum rates of triclopyr ester or choline, glyphosate, imazapyr+aminocyclopyrachlor+metsulfuron reduced the number of green antelopehorn stems compared to the untreated. Aminocyclopyrachlor, aminocyclopyrachlor+chlorsulfuron, aminopyralid, aminopyralid+2,4-D, dicamba+2,4-D, foramsulfuron+iodosulfuron+thiencarbazone, fluroxypyr, hexazinone, metsulfuron, metsulfuron+chlorsulfuron, nicosulfuron+metsulfuron, sulfometuron, sulfosulfuron or low rates of triclopyr did not reduce the stem count 1YAT when compared to the untreated. Mowing timing and frequencies applications were initiated May through July and evaluated through August. Mowing early in the season increased milkweed stems one month after treatment versus late season mowings. Majority of milkweed plants developed mature seed pods and senesced by early August.

On the Definition of Intraurban Mobility Concepts

Kanaroglou, Paul 07 1900 (has links)

Several concepts have been developed recently in the intraurban mobility literature. Among them the concepts of aspirations, place utility and stress are of particular importance. Nevertheless, their definition appears to be not very clear.

This paper aims to clarify them by employing concepts from the consumer choice theory as they are used in equilibrium models in Geography. With this purpose in mind the world of a specific equilibrium model is used. The distinction between the hypothetical world of this model and the real world is continuously emphasized.

In order to clarify further the concepts mentioned above a particular example is given. In this example a Cobb-Douglas is used as a utility function.
/ Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Optimal hedging strategies for early-planted soybeans in the South

Sayle, James Hughes 11 August 2007 (has links)
Agricultural producers are exposed to various types of risk in production agriculture. Price risk is one type of risk that producers need to manage. A well established method for managing price risk is the use of futures contracts. Soybean production in the south has evolved over recent years due to changes in technology. The change in production practices due to technology has created agronomic benefits as well as new possible marketing strategies. The agronomic benefits are reflected in both higher and less variable yields. This reduction in production risk may contribute to changes in optimal marketing strategies compared to traditional production systems. New marketing strategies may now be feasible due to earlier harvesting opportunities allowing for new marketing strategies which may be preferable to traditional strategies. The focus of this study will be estimating utility maximizing hedge ratios to capture the impact of production risk on the optimal hedging strategy.
