Spirit, penance, and perfection : the exegesis of I Corinthians 5:3-5 from A.D. 200-451McDonald, Bruce Andrew January 1994 (has links)
This thesis examines the exegesis of I Corinthians 5:3-5 between the years of 200, when the text is first cited, and 451, by which time the text had been subjected to a variety of exegetical approaches and applied to a number of different situations. A chronological (rather than topical) approach has been adopted; each writer's overall use of the passage is studied, in hope that this will give better insight into his exegesis of the Corinthian text. Although penitential theology was beginning to develop, with one major penance allowed for grievous post-baptismal sin (an idea found in the Shepherd of Hermas), the earliest extant exegesis of I Corinthians 5 :3-5 occurs in the works of Tertullian during his Montanist phase; he cites it to support his argument that certain grave sins are beyond remission by the Church. For Tertullian, the interitum earn is refers to irrevocable excommunication and possible death for a serious offender. The spiritus which is to be saved is that of the Church, since the offender's spirit cannot possibly be saved after a descent into serious sin. Later in the same century, Origen takes a different position; since Paul counseled the church at Corinth to forgive a penitent sinner (II Corinthians 2: 5-11), this was presumably the same man who had so grievously sinned (I Corinthians 5). Therefore, all sins are remissible by the Church. Origen construes the 7tv£uμa to be saved as the offender's spirit. The oA.£0pov -cilc; crapx:oc; refers to the destruction of the cpp6v11μa -cilc; crapx:oc; and may be identified with the sufferings and humiliations which penitents undergo. These approaches to the Corinthian passage are joined by a third in the following century: Basil, although he at times cites I Corinthians 5 :3-5 in a congregational context, also transplants the passage into a monastic setting, deriving support from it for his method of chastising recalcitrant monks. Here xxx is construed as the individualistic, self-asserting human nature. This thesis will show that these three methods of interpreting the Corinthian text remain normative for the period under discussion, although by the end of the period under discussion, writers such as John Chrysostom, Pacian, and Jerome suggest that the punishment may involve more than mere excommunication, although it does include that. By the mid-fifth century, the exegesis of I Corinthians 5 is closely bound to the penitential procedure of the Church, and there is general agreement that the passage's overall character is remedial and restorative; crap~ refers to the carnal nature which must be destroyed in order for a person to become spiritual again, and this is done through penance. The punishment imposed by Paul is seen to be temporary and restorative, not final and destructive. Although the patristic consensus differs from most modem commentators in identifying the offenders of I Corinthians 5 and II Corinthians 2, nevertheless the exegesis of this passage by the Fathers retains its interest and value. Some of the more exceptional interpretations are now echoed in recent commentaries.

Characterization of Novel Plasmonic, Photonic, and Semiconductor MicrostructuresSears, Jasmine Soria, Sears, Jasmine Soria January 2017 (has links)
The fields of telecommunications and optoelectronics are under constant pressure to shrink devices and reduce power consumption. Micro-scale photonic and plasmonic structures can trap light and enhance the brightness of active emitters; thus, these types of structures are promising avenues to accomplishing the goals of miniaturization and efficiency. A deeper understanding of specific structures is important in order to gauge their suitability for specific applications. In this dissertation, two types of microstructures are explored: one-dimensional silicon photonic crystals and self-assembled indium islands. This dissertation will provide novel characterization of these structures and a description of how to utilize or compensate for the observed features.
A photonic crystal can act as a tiny resonator for certain wavelengths, making it a promising structure for applications that require extremely small lasers. However, because of silicon’s indirect bandgap, a silicon photonic crystal cavity would require the addition of an active emitter to function as a light source. Attempts to incorporate erbium into these cavities, and the observation of an unusual coupling phenomenon, will be discussed.
Self-assembled indium islands are plasmonic structures that can be grown via molecular beam epitaxy. In theory, these islands should be pure indium nanoantennas on top of a smooth gallium arsenide substrate. In practice, the component materials are less segregated than predicted, giving rise to unexpected hollow dome shapes and a sub-surface indium layer. Although these features were not an intended result of indium island growth, they provide information regarding the island formation process and potentially contribute additional applications.

Vidia Naipaul - artist of the absurd.Zinkhan, Elaine Joan January 1972 (has links)
This thesis acknowledges that the philosophical basis of the novels and short stories of Vidia Naipaul bears a significant resemblance to the tenets of Absurdity set out in Albert Camus' The Myth of Sisyphus and witnessed in various other Absurdist writings. At the same time it attempts to demonstrate that Naipaul's Absurdist vision reflects a Zeitgeist fundamental to the West Indies. It in no way suggests, however, that Naipaul consciously imitated the thoughts of Camus or others, or that he deliberately set out to circumscribe West Indian feelings.
Chapter One attempts to demonstrate that Naipaul's most crucial perceptions of life have been those of disorientation and futility. It then shows where awareness of an inharmonious existence has been especially prevalent in the twentieth century, and it goes on to examine in some detail the discovery of the Absurd Conjunction between the world and individual consciousness articulated by Camus in The Myth of Sisyphus. In addition it describes the alternatives which Camus and other Absurdist writers advance to counter-act the anguish of Absurd Discovery.
The second chapter begins by revealing the relationship between the absurd as "ridiculous" and the Absurd as "anguish", demonstrating that while Naipaul's perception of the irreducibility of the world is more central to his later works, it begins already in his earlier ones. It then goes on to discuss various aspects of Absurd Discovery which appear in Naipaul’s fiction: discovery of the isolation of man; discovery of the hostility of the world to the desires of man; and discovery of the disparity between the possible and the actual. Chapter Three shows how Naipaul's characters respond to the challenge of meaninglessness with both negation and affirmation. Although his characters frequently submit to despondency, this is in most cases only an initial reaction.
In a vein similar to that of Camus, Naipaul implies that the Absurd would best be confronted by rebellion, creativity, personal involvement or, barring all else, ironic assessment.
The final chapter demonstrates that the world of Vidia Naipaul - the disorder to which he attests and the alternatives he offers - while exhibiting sentiments essential to the European Absurdists, also mirrors experiences general to the West Indies.. Rather than dissecting with dispassionate superiority a background from which he has had occasion to feel alienated, Naipaul has sensitively illuminated a geographical region which, both historically and sociologically, has come to encompass its own especial Sisyphean sphere. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

Ta/v\am: Real-time Audio/video Scrubbing Tools for Analysis of Multimedia and G®¡ndTramte, Daniel Albert 05 1900 (has links)
tA/v\Am (the Audio/Video Analysis Machine) is an interactive analysis engine optimized for audio/visual mediums, such as film, video games, and music. I designed tA/v\Am to allow users to pace the playback speed of videos containing sub-title style analytical text, without affecting the pitch content of the audio. The software affords writers the opportunity to display the relevant sensory data (i.e., analytical text and sound/visual media) more efficiently than the paper format. It also serves as a flexible medium; the writer may, for example, compress extensive text into a short amount of time, causing the reader to pause or slow down the rate of the video and thus suspending him/her in the sensorial moment which the writer describes. G®¡ND for Alto Saxophone, Percussion & Electronics is an exploration of the tipping point between signal and noise. Through tablature notation, MIR tools, granular synthesis, and the deconstruction of the saxophone, I have assembled a palette of inordinately contrasting sounds and threaded them together based on action profiles obtained by computer assisted analysis. With them, I have set varying physical conditions of friction that dictates whether the sonic energy is to become focused to one resonant point, or distributed equally/randomly throughout the spectrum as noise. In my critical essay, I use the software to analyze independent video games, showing how tA/v\Am is a highly appropriate tool for such analysis as it is an analogous medium. I then show the software's capabilities as a multimedia platform in analyzing acoustic music, as well as my own electroacoustic work, G®¡ND. In doing so, I advocate for a media-driven analyses, and maintain that one can communicate nuanced ideas using minimal verbal/textual explanation.

Filmová projekce v malbě / Projecting Film Into PaintingLorenz, Petr Unknown Date (has links)
Film screenings in painting In his theoretical work and film storyboard artwork I had the opportunity to prepare the philosophical basis for the practical part of the thesis. I was inspired by many authors with different approaches to film and film footage contemplation. For me as a creator, it was important to work with what is well-known. I dealt with the question of whether he could reality that surrounds us, filmic look when she make her over. After previous experience of seeing the painting, which draws on the film composition and borrowing of foreign ideas, I decided - as well as a film director - search for compositions which can be seen in the reality around us. Following my bachelor thesis, which was purely monochromatic cycle, I now chose a color theme and I returned to the activities that precede the making of the film. Our eye can function as a film lens. A seemingly ordinary reality is for me a pretext for building atmospheric film scene. For a long time I wore a camera with me, which was ready to use the moment I discovered an interesting space or situation. Patterns for paintings I naturally found in my travels around the city. I specifically sought location, which could be part of an imaginary film. For me, the composition under sunny streets huddled different feeling and unfinished, something that comes and works below the surface of each image in parallel. I hope linking reality and personal paintings will boost the atmosphere as value added. Name Film screenings in painting refers to the vocabulary filmmakers, the author looks at the experiences around film composition. In my work I wanted to simulate the Czech local, peculiar atmosphere of the place. During the work, there was a change from the original plan, and that the originals are really own, nevypůjčené. Heroes paintings are everyday people with their personal stories. However, there is a blending and assimilation of different film genres. For example, an image with the workers and the working machine has a compositional compliance with the sci-fi film, light and story recall something that we could ever see. Compared painters who have the means to extensive designed templates, I worked with a range that can be found only through accurate observation of reality. Construction patterns and Figures, therefore, actor scene, I could not prepare in advance. I counted with the fact that something interesting camera ready to capture and scene appeared before me. A crucial part of the process of my work was therefore observation and effort as possible to capture the genius loci.

Hodnocení kvality mléčných výrobků vyrobených z kozího mlékaLovasová, Renáta January 2019 (has links)
This diploma thesis engages in theme: Quality evaluation of dairy products made from goat milk. In literature summary of the thesis is described composition and characteristics of goat milk. There is basic information about goat dairy products, especially about cheeses. Practical part of the thesis deals with measuring pH, titrating acidity, content of proteins, fat, salt, dry matter and fat in dry matter in samples of goat cheeses. All results are compared in its group of goat cheese and simultaneously with other groups of goat cheeses. Measured values of analysis are compared with data on packaging. The lowest value in majority of the analysis reach group of spreadable cheeses. The highest values in majority of the analysis were found in semi-hard cheeses made only from goat milk and from mixture of goat, cow and ewe milk. When the results are being compared with the packaging, the most values correspond with dry matter and content of proteins. The lowest corresponding results were found in fat in matter and content of salt of goat cheese.
