Training in the Value Systems for Seventh Grade Students: a Creative DesignRhodes, Sherry C. 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this project was to design a values package to create awareness and understanding for seventh grade students in the value system so as to achieve a more complementary classroom atmosphere. The value system is a new concept based on Clare Graves' seven levels of psychological existence: Reactive, Tribalistic, Egocentric, Conformist, Manipulative, Sociocentric, Existential. In addition, the package was designed to integrate the affective and cognitive levels of learning into an experimental learning situation. The package included written material, games, and activities which are all designed to create self-awareness and maintain relevancy for the students.

Exploring Social Issues and Value Systems in Contemporary Art EducationTurner, Charlotte 04 May 2007 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to field test a unit of lessons in which students explore how a variety of social issues and value systems impact the meaning expressed in their artwork. By exposing students to different systems of belief, their historical contexts, and providing opportunities for students to discuss, research and symbolically express meaning I hope to develop critical thinking skills; promote increase in the social conscience of teenagers; help students develop critical thinking skills; promote student active involvement in their community at large; encourage social activism; and help students become part of the larger global community. The study utilized pre and post written tests, student artwork, student written responses and an auto-ethnographic approach to document student outcomes. Although evidence of progress was observed there is a need for additional research about ways art education might be used to assist students in the development of a social conscience and awareness of the global community.

Pastoral counsellors' value systems and moral judgement development : a practical theological studyHestenes, Mark Erling, 1949- 11 1900 (has links)
Recent literature by several eminent psychotherapists ·such as
Bergin and Beutler argues that counsellors' personal values are
probably the greatest influence on the success and outcome of
therapy and that the counsellor tends to convert the client to
the counsellor's values. This literature provided strong support
for this researcher's contention of the need for similar studies
in pastoral counselling. The researcher was particularly
concerned about the role of pastoral counsellors' value systems
and moral judgement development in counselling situations. The
researcher selected the Rokeach Value Survey and the Rest
Defining Issues Test as instruments to test a sample of South
African pastoral counsellors in this regard.
The research questions addressed were as follows.
Firstly, what are the value systems of a sample of pastoral
counsellors in the South African context?
Secondly, what are the moral judgement development levels of the
pastoral counsellors?
Thirdly, what is the relationship between the rank ordering of
values and pastoral counsellors' levels of moral judgement
development?
Fourthly, what implications could these variables have for
pastoral-client pairing in pastoral counselling?
The chief findings were as follows.
Firstly, the pastoral counsellors were shown to have conservative
value systems with a preference for introspective terminal values
over social terminal values.
Secondly, the pastoral counsellors had a P score of 39.6 on the
Defining Issues Test. This compares favourably with Asian
university students who score between 36-40 as opposed to
American university students who have a mean P score of 42.6. The
researcher concluded that the conservative religious ideology of the sample helped to explain the low P scores somewhat.
Thirdly, the Spearman correlational coefficient indicated little
correlation between the Rokeach Value Survey and the Rest
Defining Issues Test.
Fourthly, both instruments indicated that the conservative nature
of the pastoral counsellors would no doubt make them very
effective counsellors in most denominations. They would tend to
counsel in support of the status quo in the church. A major
recommendation of the study was the need for further pastoral
counsellor education in dealing with moral values issues. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / D.Th. (Practical theology)

Sacrificial and Expressive Value Systems in the English Neo-Classic and Romantic MovementsHeflich, Debra L. 05 1900 (has links)
This rhetorical study applies Clare W. Graves' "Level of Existence" or value systems theory to the English Neo-Classic and Romantic Movements. Graves' framework, which focuses on sacrificial (Tribalistic, Absolutistic, and Sociocentric) systems and expressive (Egocentric, Achievist, and Individualistic) systems~was utilized in analyzing the politics, society, religion, philosophy, and literature of the two periods. The Neo-Classic Period was dominated by sacrificial systems, especially Absolutistic, while the Romantic Movement was dominated by expressive systems, especially Achievist. This thesis suggests that man's cultural development, like his psychological development, appears to evolve in a spiraling, pendular motion between sacrificial and expressive systems.

Cognition and value systems at a leadership level in a multinational organisationSatchel, Sally Alexandra 02 1900 (has links)
Globalisation had a major impact on the way organisations operate. Access to information and innovative technology connote that organisational leaders need to make timely decisions while considering a range of rapidly changing variables. Leaders of global organisations need to make sense of complex information and anticipate the long-term outcomes of making different decisions. This requires highly developed cognitive skills. However, these are not the only factors influencing strategic decisions. Value systems also affect the choices organisational leaders make. Limited existing research has investigated the relationship between values and cognition within organisational leadership.
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between cognitive complexity, cognitive processes and individual values at a senior management level in a multinational company. Cognition is explored in terms of cognitive processes and levels of work (as measured by the Cognitive Process Profile), and values are explored in terms of value systems (as measured by the Value Orientations questionnaire).
The study is based on a quantitative research design, where a sample of 265 executives, senior managers and directors employed at a multinational organisation completed the assessments. The empirical study (N = 265) yielded some weak, yet statistically significant, relationships between cognition and value systems among organisational leaders in a multinational organisation. / Industrial & Organisational Psychology / M.A. (Industrial and Organisational Psychology)

Enhancing realistic academic self-actualisation : a psycho-andragogical perspective / Bevordering van realistiese akademiese selfaktualisering : 'n Psigo-andragogiese perspektiefSonnekus, Ingrid Phyllis 11 1900 (has links)
Summaries in English and Afrikaans / This research was triggered by the need to assist first year students in a way which had not
been addressed by the people involved with the upliftment of disadvantaged students. The
aspect which was addressed was the personal growth of the adult learner within the
academic situation with consideration of his own personal circumstances and ideals. This
means that a micro level approach was generated by creating the Academic Enhancement
Programme (AEP). The purpose of the programme is to give adult learners the opportunity
to understand themselves and their own value systems better on a micro, meso and macro
level, to experience personal growth or self-actualisation and to see how these factors
influence the adult learners' interaction with the tertiary academic situation.
Eight possible value systems were discussed and introduced to the adult learners who
participated in the Academic Enhancement Programme. The adult learners were given the
opportunity to measure themselves against the value systems and to evaluate how these
influenced their realistic academic self-actualisation. The psycho-andragogical categories
were utilised during the application of the programme as criteria to evaluate the
effectiveness of the programme.
The following recommendations were made
• the creation of a faculty specific induction programme
• linking study packages directly to the context of adult learners
• organising personal academic contact
• giving personal academic support
• making the evaluation procedures transparent
• creating and supporting informal study groups
Although the study has certain limitations, it should be of great value to the university
system during the transformation phase that it is experiencing at present. The main aim
of the study is, however, the contribution to the academic growth of the adult learner in the
be'invloed.
Psychology of Education / D.Ed. (Psychology of Education)
