Geographical location of Lithuania determines its role as a transit country. This fact obliges to assure an efficient movement of the goods through the territory of Lithuania. One of the directions to evolve transport sector can be the development of combined road-rail transport (CT). The purpose of the dissertation – on the basis of analysis of scientific works and best practical experience in the field of CT to determine means that stipulate development of CT, arrange them according to the particularity of Lithuanian transport sector, and create a model for the development of combined carriages through the territory of Lithuania. In order to reach this purpose, following tasks are accomplished: 1.Determined all combined road-rail transport elements and their importance; 2.Investigated current market of CT in the EU and technological measures that assure development of these carriages; 3.Carried out an investigation of capabilities of Lithuanian transport system stressing an interaction of road and rail transport; 4.Created model which involves linkage of infrastructure of different transport modes in to one network and assures an optimal exploitation of infrastructure by flows of different transport modes. 5.Explained technological factors that influence possibilities to develop combined carriages through the territory of Lithuania.

Shortsea shipping promotion and optimization issues have been repeatedly emphasized by the EU Commission and long-term researchers of the segment. The problem we are facing today is, that many commercial players still wrongly approach shortsea shipping with scepticism, as a bit outdated mode of transport; besides there are numerous administrative obstacles and factors involved that impede ultimate integration of shortsea shipping into the existing intermodal and multimodal transport chains. Inadequate infrastructures of port terminals, lack of logistics elements, as well as protectionism related barriers existing in the EU member states, all these urge the necessity to investigate the feasibility and potential of shortsea shipping across the EU.

Baigiamajame magistro darbe nagrinėjamos krovinių vežimo iš Kinijos į Europą geležinkelių transportu problemos, įvairių autorių nuomonė šia tema. Išnagrinėta esama krovinių vežimo iš Kinijos į Europą jūrų ir geležinkelių transportu situacija ir dėl to atsirandančios problemos, išanalizuotos esamos geležinkelių transporto panaudojimo galimybės tokių krovinių vežimo srityje. Baigiamajame darbe skaičiuojamas geležinkelio linijų, esančių tarp Kinijos ir Europos, krovinių metinis pralaidumas, nustatomos mažiausią pajėgumą turinčios vietos, galimi vežti srautai lyginami su esamais jūrų transporto srautais. Nustatomas šių pajėgumų didinimo planas, apskaičiuojamas jam reikalingas investicijų poreikis. Vertinant projekto investicijų efektyvumą, apskaičiuojama projekto dabartinė grynoji vertė, vidinė pelno norma, investicijų rentabilumo indeksas ir atsipirkimo laikas. Taip pat atliekamas šio projekto ekonominis įvertinimas, apskaičiuojant finansinę naudą, kurią patirs Europoje esantys krovinių gavėjai dėl sutrumpėjusio krovinių pristatymo laiko, bei prognozuojamą naudą Lietuvai dėl sukurtų naujų darbo vietų ir papildomų mokesčių į biudžetą. Išnagrinėjus teorinius ir praktinius krovinių vežimo iš Kinijos į Europą geležinkelių transportu aspektus, pateikiamos baigiamojo darbo išvados ir pasiūlymai. / The final master thesis analyses the problems and scientific literature on freight shipment by rail from China to Europe. The work contains the analysis of the current situation and emerging problems of freight shipment by sea and rail from China to Europe. It also includes an investigation of railway infrastructure abilities to manage these carriages. The work contains the calculation of cargo throughput of railway lines between China and Europe. It also determines the weakest links in these lines. In addition, the possible cargo turnover is compared with sea freight turnover. After this, the project of throughput increasing is taken, including the calculation of desirable investment. Analyzing the effectiveness of this investment project, net present value, internal return rate and investment profitableness index are calculated. The analysis also includes economical assessment, identifying financial benefit to freight receivers in Europe, which appears from saved time of cargo distribution from China. What is more, the benefit Lithuania gets from new workplaces and additional budget income is discussed. Having analyzed the theoretical and practical aspects of freight shipment by rail from China to Europe, the conclusions and proposals are presented.

The dissertation considers the problems, associated with passenger transportation by international trains (PTIT). The research object is the process of passenger transportation by international trains (PPTIT). By using the experimental methods, the significances (weights) and the order of preferences of the qualitative criteria, describing this process, are determined. The complex model, deve-loped by the author for multicriteria PTIT evaluation, allows for determining a single-valued quantitative criterion for evaluating a particular train travelling on a particular route. The main aim of the dissertation is to offer a methodology for evaluating the quality of passenger transportation by international trains (QPTIT).
The dissertation consists of the Introduction, four chapters, the description of the obtained results, the list of references as well as the author’s publications on the topic of the thesis and 12 annexes.
The Introduction briefly describes the research problem and object, the topicality of the work, its aim and objectives, and the applied research methods, as well as the novelty and practical value of the results obtained and the defended statements. Finally, the Introduction presents the list of the author’s publications and reports delivered at the conferences on the topic of the dissertation.

[to full text] / Disertacijoje nagrinėjamos tarptautinio keleivių vežimo geležinkeliais (TKVG) problemos. Pagrindinis darbo objektas – tarptautinio keleivių vežimo geležinkeliais procesas (TKVGP). Eksperimentiniais metodais nustatyti kelionės traukiniu kokybės kriterijų reikšmingumas ir šių kriterijų grupių svarba (pirmumas). Autorės suformuluotas TKVG kompleksinis daugiakriterinis vertinimo modelis leido nustatyti vieno traukinio, vykstančio tam tikru maršrutu, vienareikšmį kiekybinį rodiklį. Pagrindinis disertacijos tikslas – pateikti tarptautinio keleivių vežimo geležinkeliais (kelionės traukiniu) kokybės (TKVGK) vertinimo metodologiją.
Disertaciją sudaro įvadas, keturi skyriai, rezultatų apibendrinimas, naudotos literatūros ir autorės publikacijų disertacijos tema sąrašai bei 12 priedų.
Įvade trumpai aptarta tiriamoji problema, darbo aktualumas, pristatytas tyrimų objektas, suformuluotas darbo tikslas bei uždaviniai, aprašyta tyrimų metodika, mokslinis darbo naujumas, praktinė rezultatų reikšmė bei pateikti ginamieji teiginiai. Currently Port of Klaipėda has been interlinked by ro-ro transit lines with Germany, Sweden and Denmark. It has been sought not only for improvement but also for development and expansion of the ro-ro market in order to answer continuously growing needs of clients.
Lithuanian ro-ro liner shippers and operators although confronted by severe competition in ro-ro shipping market, strive to retain their position, conquer and manage new ro-ro markets. Yet it is to be mentioned that close cooperation with other transport industries and ro-ro terminals is not always attainable what consequently enhance the impact of factors affecting ro-ro transport and lessen attractiveness of such transportation, reduce cargo flow in general.
Relevance of the problem. Considerable part of ro-ro lines are forced to close down soon after they are opened as having no prospects for they fail to attract sufficient freight and cargo flow due to multiple reasons like inadequate assessment and underestimation of advantages, shortcomings and risks (threats) and overestimated possibilities, insufficient research into cargo flow, inconsideration or failed acknowledgement of factors affecting ro-ro transportation.
