Ecrire, comprendre et expliquer l'histoire de son temps au XIVe siècle : étude et traduction des livres XI à XIII de la nuova cronica de Giovanni Villani / Writing, understanding and explaining the History of one's time in the XIVth Century : study and translation of the Books XI-XIII of Giovanni Villani's Nuova cronicaRabiot, Jeremie 28 November 2015 (has links)
As a major work of communal historiography, Giovanni Villani's Nuova cronica is a milestone for whoever intends to immerse themselves into the history of medieval Florence. Merchant, statesman and writer, the author embodies the figure of the Florentine popolano grasso. Narrating in thirteen books the history of both his city and the world, from its origins to 1348, the chronicle has left more than one hundred manuscripts, contributed to making Tuscan the language of Italians, and has inspired an abundant bibliography. This thesis focuses on a largely ignored aspect of this book, namely the relationship the author has to the history of his time, focusing on the last three books covering the years 1326-1348. Those years were a period of important political and economic change, as of deep cultural liveliness, and marked a turning point in the communal history: the Nuova cronica reveals the prosperity of this early Florentine Trecento. The chronology of the writings shows a particularly small time span between the events and their transcription: this has its consequences on both the tools and methods of the historian, who is therefore required to re-study his information channels, renew his sources and reinterpret the explicative frameworks. In addition to relying on merchant networks, the study of the sources reveals an extensive use of archive documents, which create a memory of communal institutions. The analysis of the interpretive frameworks of history attests of the importance of the author's religious mindset; this paints his historical narrative with a strong moralistic and uplifting dimension, sometimes giving it the appearance of a sum of secular exempla or a manual of civic virtues. However, the remarkable aspect of the last books lies in the way they open new perspectives into the culture of the great Florentine merchants of this time. Through the study of two aspects of this culture, theological and scientific, the capacity of a moderately literate secular man to capture a large part of scholar culture is revealed. This makes the chronicle a true work of vulgarization which builds a link between different levels of culture.

Processos composicionais de Edmundo Villani-Côrtes na sua sinfonia nº 1 para orquestra de sopros / Composing procedures of Edmundo Villani-Cortes in his Symphony nº1 for the Wind OrchestraGiardini, Mônica 05 June 2013 (has links)
This present thesis focuses on the composing procedures of Edmundo Villani-Cortes in his Symphony nº1 for the Wind Orchestra. This study investigates the borders of the popular and erudite brazilianity of the composer´s writing, as well as the type of tools he uses to write for the Symphonic Band going through the analysis of a selected piece. We defend that the idea of his musical literature for the Symphonic Band is innovating by having a different orchestral treatment for its formation, in a scholar writing which includes thematic compounds coming from the pop music. By this study, we conclude that the composer has an unique signature in his musical language and he presents himself as a representative author of the Brazilian authenticity

THE ART SONG OF EDMUNDO VILLANI-CÔRTES: A PERFORMANCE GUIDE OF SELECTED WORKSRodrigues, Irailda Eneli Barros Silva 01 January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to present a performance guide for singers on twelve selected songs in Brazilian Portuguese for voice and piano by Brazilian composer, pianist, and arranger Edmundo Villani-Côrtes (b.1930). Since 1949, Villani-Côrtes has been active in the musical scene of Brazil. He has a unique compositional style that seamlessly combines elements of both art music and popular music. Villani-Côrtes’s body of works includes over two hundred compositions for solo instrumental music, orchestral music, choral music, and art song. He has written over sixty songs in Brazilian Portuguese, including the Ciclo Cecília Meireles (1987), winner of the 1988 Prize of the Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte (A.P.C.A.), but most of these remain unpublished.
This performance guide is the result of three years of research, study and personal communication between the author, Villani-Côrtes, and poets whose words the composer used as lyrics. It offers a comprehensive body of information relevant for both the performer and voice teacher who approach this new and untraditional repertoire. It includes a concise biography of the composer, biographical information for the poets, comments on the compositional style of Villani-Côrtes, an overview of the Brazilian Portuguese International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)—with a chart of Brazilian Portuguese Sounds, IPA transcriptions with English word-by-word translations and poetic versions of all the lyrics, comments from the composer and the poets on each of the songs, and the technical information, pedagogical suggestions, and interpretative insights provided by the author.

The political discourse and its doctrinal sources in Fourteenth century Florentine chroniclesValligny, Anne-Claire 23 March 2013 (has links)
This study focuses on a corpus of chronicles of the Fourteenth century consisting in three main historiographical Florentine texts written in vernacular in this period, namely Cronica delle cose occorrenti ne’ tempi suoi by Dino Compagni, Nuova Cronica by Giovanni Villani and Cronaca fiorentina by Marchionne di Coppo Stefani. It aims at analyzing the principal concepts describing the running of the city and its stakes, as well as identifying the sources present in these chronicles. The analysis takes in account both the operation of writing the political experience and its value in elaborating the discourse on the city.To highlight what can be seen from the main aspects of political machinery in the city, the approach to the texts is threefold : the connections between city and citizens both in the context of the Comune’s increasing sovereignty and in the light of the concepts of unity and division ; the question of freedom in Florence, its fundamental principles, its forms and representations, in opposition to tyranny ; the links between the celestial city and the city of men based on the analysis of the reading of celestial omens and the concepts of Providence, Fortune and Free Will. The approach chosen concentrates on the stakes and representations peculiar to each of those subjects. From this conceptual analysis it emerges that the three main sources to the discourse on the city are the authors of Classical Antiquity, Christian Theology and Law. Contemporary sources of the chroniclers also can be found : official texts and documents produced by the city, noted authors in the period as, for instance, Dante Alighieri.
