Electroreflectance spectroscopy of InGaAs

Hsu, Chih-cheng 27 June 2008 (has links)
The electroreflectance spectra(ER) have been measured on InxGa1-xAs film under various bias(Vbias), and they have exhibited many Franz-Keldysh Oscillations(FKOs) above band-gap energy. Their strength of field in the film can be obtained by the periods of FKOs. Due to many oscillations of FKOs, the Fast Fourier transform can be applied to separate heavy- and light-hole transitions. The relation between F and Vbias was nearly linear. FKOs were observable at a large range of photon energy(£_E). The mean free path of carriers can be estimated from the relation between £_E and F. It was compared with the range of order obtained from X-ray diffraction.

Wave Number Selection and Defect Dynamics in Patterns with Hexagonal Symmetry

Semwogerere, Denis Bbija 24 November 2003 (has links)
Wave Number Selection and Defect Dynamics in Patterns with Hexagonal Symmetry Denis B. Semwogerere 108 Pages Directed by Dr. Michael F. Schatz We report quantitative measurements of wave number selection, secondary instability and defect dynamics in hexagonal patterns. A novel optical technique ("thermal laser writing") is used to imprint initial patterns with selected characteristics in a B뮡rd-Marangoni convection experiment. Initial patterns of ideal hexagons are imposed to determine the band of stable-pattern wave numbers. For small values of control parameter epsilon the measured stable band is found to agree quantitatively with theoretical predictions at the low-wave-number side of the band, and qualitatively at the high-wave-number side. Long-wavelength perturbations of ideal hexagonal patterns suggested by theory are imposed for epsilon=0.46 and their growth rates are measured to investigate the mechanisms of secondary instability. Our results suggest a transverse-phase instability limits stable hexagons at low wave number while a longitudinal-phase instability limits high-wave-number hexagons. Initial patterns containing an isolated penta-hepta defect are imprinted to study defect propagation directions and velocities. The experimental results agree well with theoretical predictions. The experimental investigations are discussed in the context of patterns with hexagonal symmetry formed under nonequilibrium external driving conditions.

A generic approach for the study of higher-order mode propagation in circular ducts with simple aperture devices

Hu, Yikun January 2007 (has links)
The aim of the work reported in this thesis is to establish a generic approach for the study of the propagation of higher-order modes in ducts of circular cross section when a simple aperture device is installed in the duct. Additionally to describe the effects of the simple aperture device on the whole in duct acoustic field, especially in the frequency range after the first higher-order mode cuts on. The approach, which is based on approximating each higher-order mode as an uncoupled mode, requires an accurate and effective decomposition of the in duct field in the higher frequency range. In the theoretical work for the propagation of the higher-order modes in circular ducts, one established model to describe the open end of the duct is considered. Another model to describe the sound source (both plane wave source and point source) and the boundaries between the aperture device and the main duct is proposed. Combining the two models together, a revised model to describe the whole acoustic system is obtained and used to carry out the in duct field decomposition in the higher frequency range. From this the amplitudes of various higher-order modes are obtained. Experimental investigations have also been carried out to determine the applicability of this model. The experimental work can be divided into two groups: reference measurements for the inputs to the models and direct measurements of the sound fields. The reference measurements are used to obtain the strength of the sound source. The direct measurements are used to compare with the results obtained from the theoretical calculations. Through the comparison, the errors and the applicability of the theoretical model are established. It is shown that this approach to the problem may be used in the normalized wave number region up to k * R -< 7 , which is nearly four times the plane wave region and includes sixteen propagating higher-order modes. By determining the amplitudes of the higher-order modes, the whole in-duct acoustic field is fully decomposed into individual model contributions and can be reconstructed in detail. In order to get a complete and coordinate-independent description of the effects of installing different simple aperture devices, the power radiated out of the open end of - i - the duct is calculated in the fonn of different single modes. Additionally the insertion losses for different aperture device situations are also obtained. Then through the comparison of the powers and the insertion losses, it is possible to find an effective and direct way to express the effects of installing different simple aperture devices in a duct.

Nombres d'ondes, masses volumiques et modules effectifs de milieux composites formés d'une matrice poro-élastique contenant des inclusions de forme cylindrique / Wavenumbers, densities and effective moduli of composite media formed of a poroelastic matrix containing cylindrical inclusions

Gnadjro, Dossou 12 July 2019 (has links)
We study the propagation of acoustic waves in a porous medium obeying the Biot theory and containing a random distribution of cylindrical cavities and that of an acoustic wave in a fluid containing a random polydisperse distribution of porous spheres. In the first case we use the generalization by Conoir-Norris of the Linton-Martin formula. It allows to take into account the phenomenon of the conversion between the three waves (two longitudinal and one transverse) naturally propagating in a porous Biot medium containing a random distribution of cavities. Analytical expressions are found for the effective wavenumbers of coherent waves in the Rayleigh limit (low frequency regime). The approximations of the densities and heterogeneous media modules are presented up to the order of c2 in concentration. The limiting case of random fluid cavities in an elastic matrix is also discussed. In the second case the effective wavenumbers, moduli and density are determined for polydisperse distributions of poroelastic spheres. To achieve this, the recent formulas of the effective wave number given by Linton and Martin in the dilute monodisperse case have been modified. Given the uncertainty for predicting the distribution in size of obstacles, three different probability densities are studied and compared: uniform, Schulz and lognormal. More precisely, the Rayleigh limit is taken into account when the wave lengths can be assumed to be very large compared to the size of the obstacles. Within this limit, simplified formulas for concentrations are provided depending on the parameter characterizing the size dispersion.

A Dynamic Theory For Laminated Composites Consisting Of Anisotropic Layers

Yalcin, Omer Fatih 01 March 2006 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, first a higher order dynamic theory for anisotropic thermoelastic plates is developed. Then, based on this plate theory, two dynamic models, discrete and continuum models (DM and CM), are proposed for layered composites consisting of anisotropic thermoelastic layers. Of the two models, CM is more important, which is established in the study of periodic layered composites using smoothing operations. CM has the properties: it contains inherently the interface and Floquet conditions and facilitates the analysis of the composite, in particular, when the number of laminae in the composite is large / it contains all kinds of deformation modes of the layered composite / its validity range for frequencies and wave numbers may be enlarged by increasing, respectively, the orders of the theory and interface conditions. CM is assessed by comparing its prediction with the exact for the spectra of harmonic waves propagating in various directions of a two-phase periodic layered composite, as well as, for transient dynamic response of a composite slab induced by waves propagating perpendicular to layering. A good comparison is observed in the results and it is found that the model predicts very well the periodic structure of spectra with passing and stopping bands for harmonic waves propagating perpendicular to layering. In view of the results, the physical significance of Floquet wave number is also discussed in the study.

High Order Numerical Methods for Problems in Wave Scattering

Grundvig, Dane Scott 29 June 2020 (has links)
Arbitrary high order numerical methods for time-harmonic acoustic scattering problems originally defined on unbounded domains are constructed. This is done by coupling recently developed high order local absorbing boundary conditions (ABCs) with finite difference methods for the Helmholtz equation. These ABCs are based on exact representations of the outgoing waves by means of farfield expansions. The finite difference methods, which are constructed from a deferred-correction (DC) technique, approximate the Helmholtz equation and the ABCs to any desired order. As a result, high order numerical methods with an overall order of convergence equal to the order of the DC schemes are obtained. A detailed construction of these DC finite difference schemes is presented. Details and results from an extension to heterogeneous media are also included. Additionally, a rigorous proof of the consistency of the DC schemes with the Helmholtz equation and the ABCs in polar coordinates is also given. The results of several numerical experiments corroborate the high order convergence of the proposed method. A novel local high order ABC for elastic waves based on farfield expansions is constructed and preliminary results applying it to elastic scattering problems are presented.

Analysis of Two-point Turbulence Measurements for Aeroacoustics

Wenger, Christian W. 06 January 1999 (has links)
Simultaneous two-point three-component four-sensor hot-wire velocity measurements taken in three flows of aeroacoustic interest are here analyzed. The analyses provide information on the turbulence structure of the flows as it would be encountered by hypothetical noise producing blades passing through the flows. Two-point measurements taken in the first flow, a lifting wake from a rectangular NACA 0012 half wing, are used to calculate space-time correlation functions and 'pointwise' wave number frequency spectra. Two upwash spectra, calculated for locations in the region of the wake that is roughly homogenous in the spanwise direction, are direct estimates of the full wave number frequency spectra at their locations. As such, they are used to perform aeroacoustic calculations, and the results are compared to results achieved using the von Kármán isotropic spectrum. Amiet's approximation, where the wave number frequency spectra can be represented by the correlation length scales is found to hold reasonably well for the measured spectra. The two-point measurements in the second flow, a vortex/blade-tip interaction, are analyzed to provide information useful to researchers of blade-wake interaction noise produced by helicopter rotors. Space-time correlation functions and wave number frequency spectra are calculated for five cuts through the region of interaction. The correlation functions provide information concerning the turbulence length scales found in the interaction region. The spectra are compared to the von Kármán isotropic spectrum and found to be greatly different. However, the spectra do bear some resemblance to spectra calculated in the spanwise homogenous region of the lifting wake. The two-point measurements taken in the third flow, the wake from a fan cascade, are analyzed to provide information of use to modelers of broadband noise produced through rotor wake/stator interactions. In particular, space-time correlation functions are calculated for a grid of two-point measurements, which allows the estimation of the turbulence structure as seen by a passing stator blade. Space-time correlation functions and wave number frequency spectra are calculated for various stator configurations. The implications of engine operating speed and stator configuration for broadband noise production are discussed. [Vita removed March 2, 2012. GMc] / Master of Science

Étude des caractéristiques Raman et optique non-linéaire des bronzes de tungstène quadratiques (A6M2M’8O30) / Study of Raman and non-linear optical characteristics of tetragonal tungsten bronze (A6M2M’8O30)

Derbazi, Maqboula 11 October 2013 (has links)
Recently, very significant research has been devoted to the study of ferroelectric compounds of tetragonal tungsten bronze (TTB). This thesis deals with the synthesis and characterization of 7 TTB's material with general formula A6M2M'8O30 (A = Sr2+, Ba2+ or Pb2+, M = Ti4+, Zr4+ or HF4+, M '= Nb5+ or Ta5+). These crystalline compounds of large size ~ 100 nm were synthesized in powder form. The experimental Technics: X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy SEM and TEM and nonlinear optics NLO, allowed us to establish close relationships between structure and physical properties. The nonlinear 2nd and 3rd order optical susceptibility χ(2), χ(3) of all compounds were determined and the resulting values of χ(3) did not show the same characteristics as measures of χ(2) because the THG signal is less dependent on the structure where SHG signal requires a non-centro-symmetric medium. The frequency shift between the vibration modes of structures containing strontium (Sr) and those based on Barium (Ba) has been detailed to identify signatures of these specific compounds. The interpretation of these powders wasn't that easy as these peaks are very delicate but our experimental results clearly show that the positions of the peaks can be modified by the change in cation materials, as long as the crystal lattice is more rigid, more we get discernible Raman modes. This difference is clearly visible where the emission is around 808 cm-1 for the structure Sr, whereas the Br it is centered around 780cm-1. We attribute these Δσ (28cm-1) to the transition of spatial symmetry group from Pba2 to P4bm. Results showed the wide variety of settings in which it is possible to act in order to optimize the compositions for a specific application.
