Cartography for Communities: An Examination of Participatory Action MappingBoll, Amber J. 11 August 2015 (has links)
Participatory Action Mapping (PAM) as a methodology strives to fill the gaps created by participatory and critical mapping methodologies. Public participatory GIS (PPGIS), which often fails to elicit a bottom up approach to mapping, and community mapping, which typically produces critical mappings that often fail to be taken seriously by decision makers both fall short in offering members of the public meaningful opportunities to make claims about particular places. Through the implementation of a critical mapping methodology that utilizes professional cartography techniques, PAM offers community organizations the ability to assert their claims through maps. Using a critical cartography lens, this case study focuses on PAM with a community-based organization in west Atlanta and reveals how this methodology can be successful in engaging professional mapping practices to communicate the truths of, and subsequently inspire action among, community members.

Protikrízové opatrenia hotela Westside v rokoch 2008/2009 so zameraním na nefinančnú sféru / Hotel Westside non-financial anti-crisis measures in 2008/2009Sýkorová, Lívia January 2009 (has links)
The goal of my thesis is to analyze anti-crisis measures of the hotel Westside located in the United States of America. The first chapter explains theoretical approaches to crisis and its impacts. It depicts crisis management approaches to successful crisis managing. In the next part of my thesis I look closer at the U.S. subprime mortgage crisis. I tried to show details of subprime mortgage crisis spreading into the financial sector and also its impacts on tourism industry. The last chapter of my thesis compares theoretical approaches with the real steps in the crisis. After analyzing the real hotel behavior, I can conclude the hotel managed the crisis successfully. Right identification of the crisis, choosing effective price strategy and additional financial resource utilization contributed to smooth managing of the crisis. There were mistakes made by human resources department. They made the impact of the crisis on the hotel bigger but their realizing taught the management of the hotel how to behave in the future.

Corner stores and bottles : African-American consumption in Indianapolis / Corner stores & bottlesRosenberg, Seth Andrew January 2008 (has links)
The majority of African Diaspora archaeology has focused on slavery and plantation contexts, particularly in the American South. Recently, some historical archaeologists have conducted research on the African American, postbellum experience in various settings and geographical locations. A few archaeologists have argued that race and racism were at the heart of American social structure in the antebellum and postbellum world alike. Expanding on current research, this paper compares the glass bottle assemblages from two sites from Indianapolis, Indiana's near-Westside to examine the ways in which race and racism impacted everyday consumption in an early to mid-twentieth century, Midwestern city. These two sites, a residence and a corner store within the same neighborhood, offer a unique archaeological opportunity to study how the relationship between race and consumption is affected by marketing and distribution. / Department of Anthropology
