DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A WHEELER CAP TEST SET-UP

WANG, WENCHAO, JIANG, ZHANHUA January 2010 (has links)
In practice, the radiation efficiency of antennas is often measured by the anechoic chambers. For this method, it takes plenty time and cost. In order to bring down the measurement costs, another alternative method was proposed and published by H.A. Wheeler in 1959. The Wheeler Cap method can measure the radiation efficiency of the antenna quickly and easily during the design and development stage. It has the many benefits, such as simple construction, easy and fast to implement, lower cost and accurate enough compared to other methods. Moreover, it is a reliable and extensively used method for measuring the antenna’s radiation efficiency. The basic concept about Wheeler’s method is to use the "radiansphere" which is the boundary between the near field and the far field of any small antenna to measure the radiation efficiency of antenna under test. The radiation efficiency is obtained by performing measurement in two steps i.e. measuring the antenna under test (AUT) without and with conducting radiation metal shield. The main objective of this thesis work is to design and construct a Wheeler cap test set-up. This thesis is performed to study a modified Wheeler cap method which is based on constant power loss principle and according to this principle the loss resistance of AUT remains constant whether the Wheeler cap is placed or removed, it means the AUT has zero or finite radiation resistance. Thus, the radiation efficiency can be measured using the return loss magnitude with or without Wheeler cap. The equivalent RLC circuits of AUT in the free space and with a Wheeler cap have been theoretically reviewed and analyzed. At the same time, the mathematical expressions of radiation efficiency were presented in terms of return loss using equivalent RLC circuits. In this thesis, four types of antenna have been selected to find their radiation efficiency by the Wheeler cap method using HFSS software. To compare the simulation and measurement results of radiation efficiency, lossless wire monopole antenna and lossy loop antenna are simulated, fabricated and measured. It is found that the measurement results correlates with the simulation results.

To Determine a Plan for the Equalization of Educational Opportunities in Wheeler County, Texas

Evans, Iva C. 08 1900 (has links)
This study is made to determine the educational inequalities that exist in the schools of Wheeler County and to set up a plan that will help to equalize the educational opportunities for all the children in the county, on a basis well within its financial ability. The study consists of three phases of the problem of equalizing educational opportunities in the schools of Wheeler County. The first will consist of a study of the educational conditions of the schools, based upon the general population trends, scholastic trends, the per pupil load of each elementary classroom, the subject-pupil load of each high school teacher, and the qualification of the teachers according to college work. The second will consist of a financial survey of the schools based upon assessed valuations, tax rates, cost per scholastic, and outstanding bonded indebtedness. The third will be the formulating of a plan for the equalization of educational opportunities based upon the findings of the educational and financial surveys.

Higher Compression from the Burrows-Wheeler Transform with New Algorithms for the List Update Problem

Chapin, Brenton 08 1900 (has links)
Burrows-Wheeler compression is a three stage process in which the data is transformed with the Burrows-Wheeler Transform, then transformed with Move-To-Front, and finally encoded with an entropy coder. Move-To-Front, Transpose, and Frequency Count are some of the many algorithms used on the List Update problem. In 1985, Competitive Analysis first showed the superiority of Move-To-Front over Transpose and Frequency Count for the List Update problem with arbitrary data. Earlier studies due to Bitner assumed independent identically distributed data, and showed that while Move-To-Front adapts to a distribution faster, incurring less overwork, the asymptotic costs of Frequency Count and Transpose are less. The improvements to Burrows-Wheeler compression this work covers are increases in the amount, not speed, of compression. Best x of 2x-1 is a new family of algorithms created to improve on Move-To-Front's processing of the output of the Burrows-Wheeler Transform which is like piecewise independent identically distributed data. Other algorithms for both the middle stage of Burrows-Wheeler compression and the List Update problem for which overwork, asymptotic cost, and competitive ratios are also analyzed are several variations of Move One From Front and part of the randomized algorithm Timestamp. The Best x of 2x - 1 family includes Move-To-Front, the part of Timestamp of interest, and Frequency Count. Lastly, a greedy choosing scheme, Snake, switches back and forth as the amount of compression that two List Update algorithms achieves fluctuates, to increase overall compression. The Burrows-Wheeler Transform is based on sorting of contexts. The other improvements are better sorting orders, such as “aeioubcdf...” instead of standard alphabetical “abcdefghi...” on English text data, and an algorithm for computing orders for any data, and Gray code sorting instead of standard sorting. Both techniques lessen the overwork incurred by whatever List Update algorithms are used by reducing the difference between adjacent sorted contexts.

Compression et indexation de séquences annotées / Compressing and indexing labeled sequences

Rocher, Tatiana 12 February 2018 (has links)
This thesis in text algorithm studies the compression, indexation and querying on a labeled text. A labeled text is a text to which we add information. For example: a V(D)J recombination, a marker for lymphocytes, where the text is a DNA sequence and the labels are the genes' names. A person's immune system can be represented with a set of V(D)J recombinations. With high-throughput sequencing, we have access to millions of V(D)J recombinations which are stored and need to be recovered and compared quickly. The first contribution of this manuscript is a compression method for a labeled text which uses the concept of storage by references. The text is divided into sections which point to pre-established labeled sequences. The second contribution offers two indexes for a labeled text. Both use a Burrows-Wheeler transform to index the text and a Wavelet Tree to index the labels. These indexes allow efficient queries on text, labels or both. We would like to use one of these indexes on V(D)J recombinations which are obtained with hematology services from the diagnostic or follow-up of patients suffering from leukemia.

Wheeler/Portage Nike missile launch site C-47 : historic structure report / Nike missile launch site C-47

Sivilich, Anjanette U. January 2000 (has links)
This is a historic structure report for the C-47 Nike missile launch site in Wheeler, Indiana. This report provides a description, condition assessment, and recommendation for restoration of the site since it has sustained damage from weather, fire, and vandals. The site is listed on the State Register and National Register of Historic Places and the Nike Preservation Group desires to turn the site into a Cold War museum and memorial.A history of the Cold War and development of the Nike missile systems and C-47 site provides the background of the project. Each structure and feature is described and the condition recorded. Recommendations for treatment and maintenance are provided. Suggestions are made for a phased restoration of the site to accommodate a Cold War museum. Since it is recommended the site be open to the public, issues regarding public health, safety, security, and handicap accessibility are addressed. This project does not provide a full management and preservation plan, measured HABS/HAER drawings, or a structural analysis. / Department of Architecture

Charles Wheeler and the nude in Australia

Pennings, Mark W. January 1991 (has links) (PDF)
The place for Charles Wheeler’s nudes in Australian art history has not been adequately gauged by art historians. He was one of Australia’s most notable painters of the nude, not perhaps because his vision was particularly inventive or original, but rather because he was an important, conservative conduit of that European tradition. Wheeler was very popular with the buying public over many decades, but success with his nudes was fundamentally a critical one. The positive response to Wheeler’s nudes, paintings which combined elements of the academic tradition and more fashionable conventions, presents an intriguing reflection on the nature of art criticism in Australia. The style of Wheeler’s discourse is indebted not only to late nineteenth century British models, as it was represented in the writings of critics such as R.A.M. Stevenson, who was primarily concerned with technique, but also to current debates about art and morality. One of the determining characteristics of this discourse was an interest in defining the limits between naked and nude. Critics were particularly concerned to protect the nude as a genre against moral attack by refusing to engage in a discussion of its sensual aspects. While the public was keen to debate the moral problems associated with the nude, the critics were anxious to avoid these issues. They felt that questions of morality were not central to artistic merit, and sensed that by engaging in discussion of this kind, the nude was on danger of being brought into disrepute.
