The function of multiple display signals in golden whistlers (Pachycephala pectoralis) was investigated over three field seasons (2001/02 – 2003/04) at Toolangi State Forest (Victoria, Australia). Male golden whistlers are highly ornamented and possess several elaborate plumage displays, including a yellow breast and a conspicuous white throat patch. Whistler Waves Detection - Investigation of modern machine learning techniques to detect and characterise whistler waves

Lightning strokes create powerful electromagnetic pulses that routinely cause very low frequency (VLF) waves to propagate across hemispheres along geomagnetic field lines. VLF antenna receivers can be used to detect these whistler waves generated by these lightning strokes. The particular time/frequency dependence of the received whistler wave enables the estimation of electron density in the plasmasphere region of the magnetosphere. Therefore the identification and characterisation of whistlers are important tasks to monitor the plasmasphere in real time and to build large databases of events to be used for statistical studies. The current state of the art in detecting whistler is the Automatic Whistler Detection (AWD) method developed by Lichtenberger (2009) [1]. This method is based on image correlation in 2 dimensions and requires significant computing hardware situated at the VLF receiver antennas (e.g. in Antarctica). The aim of this work is to develop a machine learning based model capable of automatically detecting whistlers in the data provided by the VLF receivers. The approach is to use a combination of image classification and localisation on the spectrogram data generated by the VLF receivers to identify and localise each whistler. The data at hand has around 2300 events identified by AWD at SANAE and Marion and will be used as training, validation, and testing data. Three detector designs have been proposed. The first one using a similar method to AWD, the second using image classification on regions of interest extracted from a spectrogram, and the last one using YOLO, the current state of the art in object detection. It has been shown that these detectors can achieve a misdetection and false alarm rate, respectively, of less than 15% on Marion's dataset. It is important to note that the ground truth (initial whistler label) for data used in this study was generated using AWD. Moreover, SANAE IV data was small and did not provide much content in the study.

Electron kinetic processes in the solar corona and wind

The Sun is surrounded by a 10^6 K hot atmosphere, the corona. The corona and the solar wind are fully ionized, and therefore in the plasma state. Magnetic fields play an important role in a plasma, since they bind electrically charged particles to their field lines. EUV spectroscopes, like the SUMER instrument on-board the SOHO spacecraft, reveal a preferred heating of coronal ions and strong temperature anisotropies. Velocity distributions of electrons can be measured directly in the solar wind, e.g. with the 3DPlasma instrument on-board the WIND satellite. They show a thermal core, an anisotropic suprathermal halo, and an anti-solar, magnetic-field-aligned, beam or "strahl". For an understanding of the physical processes in the corona, an adequate description of the plasma is needed. Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) treats the plasma simply as an electrically conductive fluid. Multi-fluid models consider e.g. protons and electrons as separate fluids. They enable a description of many macroscopic plasma processes. However, fluid models are based on the assumption of a plasma near thermodynamic equilibrium. But the solar corona is far away from this. Furthermore, fluid models cannot describe processes like the interaction with electromagnetic waves on a microscopic scale. Kinetic models, which are based on particle velocity distributions, do not show these limitations, and are therefore well-suited for an explanation of the observations listed above. For the simplest kinetic models, the mirror force in the interplanetary magnetic field focuses solar wind electrons into an extremely narrow beam, which is contradicted by observations. Therefore, a scattering mechanism must exist that counteracts the mirror force. In this thesis, a kinetic model for electrons in the solar corona and wind is presented that provides electron scattering by resonant interaction with whistler waves. The kinetic model reproduces the observed components of solar wind electron distributions, i.e. core, halo, and a "strahl" with finite width. But the model is not only applicable on the quiet Sun. The propagation of energetic electrons from a solar flare is studied, and it is found that scattering in the direction of propagation and energy diffusion influence the arrival times of flare electrons at Earth approximately to the same degree. In the corona, the interaction of electrons with whistler waves does not only lead to scattering, but also to the formation of a suprathermal halo, as it is observed in interplanetary space. This effect is studied both for the solar wind as well as the closed volume of a coronal magnetic loop. The result is of fundamental importance for solar-stellar relations. The quiet solar corona always produces suprathermal electrons. This process is closely related to coronal heating, and can therefore be expected in any hot stellar corona. In the second part of this thesis it is detailed how to calculate growth or damping rates of plasma waves from electron velocity distributions. The emission and propagation of electron cyclotron waves in the quiet solar corona, and that of whistler waves during solar flares, is studied. The latter can be observed as so-called fiber bursts in dynamic radio spectra, and the results are in good agreement with observed bursts. / Die Sonne ist von einer 10^6 K heißen Atmosphäre, der Korona, umgeben. Damit lassen sich viele makroskopische Vorgänge beschreiben. Fluidmodelle basieren aber auf der Annahme eines Plasmas nahe am thermodynamischen Gleichgewicht. Doch die Korona ist weit davon entfernt. Ferner ist es mit Fluidmodellen nicht möglich, Prozesse wie die Wechselwirkung mit elektromagnetischen Wellen mikroskopisch zu beschreiben. Kinetische Modelle, die Geschwindigkeitsverteilungen beschreiben, haben diese Einschränkungen nicht und sind deshalb geeignet, die oben genannten Messungen zu erklären. Bei den einfachsten Modellen bündelt die Spiegelkraft im interplanetaren Magnetfeld die Elektronen des Sonnenwinds in einen extrem engen Strahl, im Widerspruch zur Beobachtung. Daher muss es einen Streuprozess geben, der dem entgegenwirkt. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird ein kinetisches Modell für Elektronen in der Korona und im Sonnenwind präsentiert, bei dem die Elektronen durch resonante Wechselwirkung mit Whistler-Wellen gestreut werden. Das kinetische Modell reproduziert die beobachteten Bestandteile von Elektronenverteilungen im Sonnenwind, d.h. Kern, Halo und einen Strahl endlicher Breite. Doch es ist nicht nur auf die ruhige Sonne anwendbar. Die Ausbreitung energetischer Elektronen eines solaren Flares wird untersucht und dabei festgestellt, dass Streuung in Ausbreitungsrichtung und Diffusion in Energie die Ankunftszeiten von Flare-Elektronen bei der Erde in etwa gleichem Maße beeinflussen. Die Wechselwirkung von Elektronen mit Whistlern führt in der Korona nicht nur zu Streuung, sondern auch zur Erzeugung eines suprathermischen Halos, wie er im interplanetaren Raum gemessen wird. Dieser Effekt wird sowohl im Sonnenwind als auch in einem geschlossenen koronalen Magnetfeldbogen untersucht. Das Ergebnis ist von fundamentaler Bedeutung für solar-stellare Beziehungen. Die ruhige Korona erzeugt stets suprathermische Elektronen. Dieser Prozeß ist eng mit der Koronaheizung verbunden, und daher in jeder heißen stellaren Korona zu erwarten. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit wird beschrieben, wie sich aus der Geschwindigkeitsverteilung der Elektronen die Dämpfung oder Anregung von Plasmawellen berechnen lässt. Die Erzeugung und Ausbreitung von Elektronenzyklotronwellen in der ruhigen Korona und von Whistlern während solarer Flares wird untersucht. Letztere sind als sogenannte fiber bursts in dynamischen Radiospektren beobachtbar, und die Ergebnisse stimmen gut mit beobachteten Bursts überein.

Whistler: A case study of the effects of amenity migration on the Resort Municipality of Whistler and surrounding environs

This thesis examines the nature of amenity migration, its effects and related planning strategies and practices through a case study of the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) and surrounding environs. The goal of this study is to provide a descriptive overview of amenity migration in relation to the RMOW and region, primarily from the perspectives of selected key stakeholders as well as documentation from several RMOW and regional sources. For some time, the RMOW has been known as a world class destination resort and a progressive leader in various aspects of planning and sustainability. Interviews with sixteen key stakeholders revealed a range of familiarity with the concept of amenity migration and considerable knowledge about economic, social and environmental consequences. The concept of amenity migration was not used in RMOW and regional planning strategies and practices, raising some question about its conceptualization. A major effect of amenity migration was the lack of affordable housing, with subsequent local and regional effects. Significant planning measures perceived as effective included the Whistler Housing Authority, Vision 2020 and a regional growth strategy, currently under development. The study identifies the importance of a regional framework for strategic planning and the need for more research, in particular, to enable mountain communities to track their amenity migrants. Two key issues emerged: whether a “resort community” is viable; and the role of planners in relation to serving the diverse interests of stakeholders in these locales. The thesis concludes with implications regarding the continued use of the concept of amenity migration and the importance of the concept for planners, policy development and planning practice related to the phenomenon.

Henry James and James McNeill Whistler : representing modernity

This thesis is an examination of Henry James and James McNeill Whistler as cultural analysts of modernity. Using the theoretical work of Peter Burger, Jurgen Habermas and Theodor Adorno as a frame, I analyse James's and Whistler's theoretical and artistic responses to modernity and the problematic status of autonomous art and the modernist artist in late nineteenth century industrial capitalism. In so doing, I place both figures in their social and historical context and show how their work not only reflects but itself participates in the complex social and cultural transformations of late nineteenth century society. While Henry James has continued to attract critical attention from many quarters, those who have studied him in the larger context of nineteenth-century avant-garde culture are still relatively few. Of those contextual studies, none has examined James's career and work in the light of parallel developments in avant-garde visual art during this important and complex period. James McNeill Whistler, like Henry James an American expatriate working in late nineteenth century London, has been the subject of many studies describing his formal achievement; however, he has not yet attracted the attention of critics interested in theories of modernist representation, gender and sexuality. Because modernisation was a phenomenon which had an impact on all aspects of late nineteenth century culture, as both James and Whistler themselves acknowledge, my interdisciplinary, contextualist approach to cultural production can illuminate aspects of cultural theory and practice which might remain hidden in analyses contained within disciplinary boundaries. The present thesis is not primarily a work of art-historical scholarship nor is it an in-depth textual analysis of the Jamesian canon; it is an analysis of the ways in which two individuals deal with the conditions of their artistic practice. My thesis is original in its bringing together of two important figures - a writer and a visual artist - whose theory and practice reveals the complexity of early modern art's dialectical relationship with modernity. In so doing, I offer a critical reevaluation of the work of Henry James and James McNeill Whistler in light of its engagement with the discourses of modernity and modernism.

Studium elektromagnetických vln generovaných bleskovými výboji v širokém pásmu frekvencí / Investigation of lightning-generated elecromagnetic waves in a broad frequency range

In this work I present a study dedicated to the penetration of whistler- mode waves to the ionosphere. An algorithm of automatic detection of whist- lers in spectrograms computed from the data measured on the DEMETER sa- tellite is described. A method of causative lightning detected by the EUCLID lightning detection network assignment to a detected whistlers is described. Results of statistical study dedicated to relationship between the detected whistlers and assigned causative lightning. Based on the proccessing of data from 364 passes of the DEMETER satellite over monitored area is shown, that mean whistler amplitude decreases with distance between the causative lightning, increses with causative lightning current and in the evening is ap- proximately three times higher than in the morning. A study dedicated to subprotonospheric whistlers is presented. We found, that subprotonospheric whistler causative lightnings currents are very high compared to that of usual 0+ whistlers.
