This chapter will also highlight the constraints of the study. This is necessary to clearly identify the application of this essay in practice. The reader of this essay should be able to identify the relevance and possible applications of this study after having read chapter 1. In the past few years substantial attention has been given to auditing aspects of system software. The way system software operates and interacts, and the impact on the auditability of computer based systems were issues discussed in the EDP auditing environment. Auditors are now concentrating on using technology to assist in the performance of their audit procedures. The reasons for this are multiple, but for the purposes of this document only the major reasons will be highlighted.

The ecological interaction between habitat composition, habitat quality and abundance of some wild ungulates in India

The ecological interrelationships between the habitat composition, habitat quality and abundance of three wild ungulate species, viz. Chital (Axis axis), Sambar (Cervus unicolor) and Nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus) were investigated in three National Parks in India. The study sites differ in the structure and composition of the habitat and also occur along a rainfall gradient. The study incorporates a new approach of using forest compartments for gathering baseline ecological data. The significance of these compartments in serving as ecological bench-marks for monitoring habitat condition has been demonstrated. Toe-point transect, a modification of the point-intercept method has been extensively used to obtain rapid, reliable but coarse ecological data on ground and aerial cover and the results obtained are compared with those from the visual estimation method. Motorcycle and foot-based line transects have been used to obtain data on animal abundance. The significance of the results indicating that motorcycle transects are an efficient and reliable means of estimating the abundance of Chital and Nilgai, while foot transects provide more reliable estimates of Sambar abundance is discussed. Data on 22 habitat variables were gathered in the summer and winter seasons from all the study sites and were statistically analysed using Generalized Linear Interactive Modelling (GLIM) procedures. The habitat requirements of the three ungulate species have been determined, which enhance our understanding of the complex herbivore-habitat relationships. Analyses of habitat selection, central to the understanding of animal ecology, has been done to understand the mechanisms which permit species to co-exist. The results indicate that the three species are ecologically separated and that resource partitioning is achieved primarily by habitat partitioning. Sambar, a forest ungulate, largely occurs in the forest-woodland habitats; Chital, a species of the habitat 'edge', occurs in the woodland-grassland habitats while Nilgai prefers the miscellaneousopen and grassland habitats. The three ungulate species together contribute more than 78% to the total wild ungulate biomass. This is presumably because these species are by nature generalist and are able to exploit the unpredictable resources more efficiently than specialist species. The differential biomass/rainfall relationships of three species observed in the study have been explained on the basis of habitat requirements and feeding strategies adopted by these species. The ecological biogeography of the three ungulate species has been discussed and their ecological equivalents in Africa have been examined. The significance of above in enhancing our understanding of evolutionary biology is discussed. The study has shown that habitat composition is an all-important factor in large herbivore biology and that animal density may be used as an indicator of habitat quality.

Initial data for axially symmetric black holes with distorted apparent horizons

The production of axisymmetric initial data for distorted black holes at a moment of time symmetry is considered within the (3+1) context of general relativity. The initial data is made to contain a distorted marginally trapped surface ensuring that, modulo cosmic censorship, the spacetime will contain a black hole. The resulting equations on the complicated domain are solved using the piecewise linear finite element method which adapts to the curved surface of the marginally trapped surface. The initial data is then analyzed to calculate the mass of the space time as well as an upper bound on the fraction of the total energy available for radiation. The families of initial data considered contain no more than few percent of the total energy available for radiation even in cases of extreme distortion. It is shown that the mass of certain initial data slices depend to first order on the area of the marginally trapped surface and the gaussian curvature of prominent features. / Science, Faculty of / Physics and Astronomy, Department of / Graduate

RADIX 95n: Binary-to-Text Data Conversion

This paper presents Radix 95n, a binary to text data conversion algorithm. Radix 95n (base 95) is a variable length encoding scheme that offers slightly better efficiency than is available with conventional fixed length encoding procedures. Radix 95n advances previous techniques by allowing a greater pool of 7-bit combinations to be made available for 8-bit data translation. Since 8-bit data (i.e. binary files) can prove to be difficult to transfer over 7-bit networks, the Radix 95n conversion technique provides a way to convert data such as compiled programs or graphic images to printable ASCII characters and allows for their transfer over 7-bit networks.

The reason for using a lower precision is to see if these algorithms will run on a limited precision device, such as a Texas Instruments TMS320C25 digital signal processor, in real time.

Better Coverage of Arizona's Weather and Climate: Gridded Datasets of Daily Surface Meteorological Variables

7 pp. / Many areas that use agricultural and environmental science for management and planning – ecosystem conservation, crop and livestock systems, water resources, forestry and wildland fire management, urban horticulture – often need historical records of daily weather for activities that range from modeling forage production to determining the frequency of freezing temperatures or heavy rainfall. In the past, such applications primarily have used station-based observations of meteorological variables like temperature and precipitation. However, weather stations are sparsely and irregularly located throughout Arizona, and due to the highly variable terrain across the state (Figure 1), information recorded at these sites may not represent meteorological conditions at distant, non-instrumented locations or over broad areas. This issue, along with others related to quality, length, and completeness of station records, can hinder the use of weather and climate data for agricultural and natural resources applications. In response to an increasing demand for spatially and temporally complete meteorological data as well as the potential constraints of station-based records, the number of gridded daily surface weather datasets is expanding. This bulletin reviews a current suite of these datasets, particularly those that integrate both atmospheric and topographic information in order to better model temperature and precipitation on relatively fine spatial scales, and is intended for readers with knowledge of weather, climate, and geospatial data. In addition to addressing how these datasets are developed and what their spatial domain and resolution, record length, and variables are, this bulletin also summarizes where and how to access these datasets, as well as the general suitability of these datasets for different uses.
