Have assumed, that the choices of students still get along due to your cultural capital, the habitus of a social group and its chances of future success, as well as the overall structure of the education system. Aimed to analyze the policy of quotas on UFPB regarding democratization of access and permanence of the shareholders in the courses of high social prestige of the campus I of UFPB. He enrolled in a quantitative and qualitative approach of research, whose investigation broke the look on access, from the enrolment indicators in the CEPS and CBPS of 2011-2015 analyzed by SPSS software, which had a higher concentration of students respectively in pedagogy, law, medicine, civil engineering, nutrition and physical. About the permanence, sought to understand the nuances of performance of shareholders through the CRAs, beyond their trajectories, social origins and the mechanisms of student assistance offered by UFPB from students ' shareholders look of CEPS, using the semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis of content of Bardin. Was on the concepts of cultural capital, field and habitus in Bourdieu, and discussed the democratization whereas access, permanence and the concept of quality in education. Argued that the democratization of public higher education took place primarily via careers considered of lesser social prestige, and the area of Humanities in particular, although the study recognizes the role of the law of quotas in the reconfiguration of the profile of the students present in the most prestigious courses. / A pesquisa em tela reitera a responsabilidade da universidade no processo de democratização dos Cursos de Elevado Prestígio Social, e as reflexões sobre os mecanismos de permanência a partir dos cotistas beneficiários. Tem como pressuposto, que as escolhas dos estudantes ainda se dão muito em função de seu capital cultural, do habitus de um grupo social e das suas probabilidades de êxito futuro, bem como da estrutura geral do sistema de ensino. Teve como objetivo analisar a política de cotas na UFPB quanto à democratização do acesso e a permanência dos cotistas nos cursos de elevado prestígio social do campus I da UFPB. Inscreveu-se numa abordagem quanti-qualitativa de pesquisa, cuja investigação partiu do olhar sobre o acesso, a partir dos indicadores de matrículas nos CEPS e CBPS de 2011-2015 analisados por meio do software SPSS, que apontou uma concentração maior de estudantes respectivamente em pedagogia, direito, medicina, eng. civil, nutrição e física. Sobre a permanência, buscou-se compreender as nuances de desempenho dos cotistas através dos CRAs, além das suas trajetórias, origens sociais e dos mecanismos de assistência estudantil oferecidos pela UFPB a partir do olhar dos estudantes cotistas dos CEPS, utilizando-se das entrevistas semi-estruturadas e da análise temática de conteúdo de Bardin. Pautou-se nos conceitos de capital cultural, campo e habitus em Bourdieu, e discutiu a democratização considerando o acesso, a permanência e o conceito de qualidade social em Educação. Defendeu que a democratização da educação superior pública se deu prioritariamente via carreiras consideradas como de menor prestígio social, e pela área de humanidades em particular, embora o estudo reconheça o papel da Lei de cotas na reconfiguração do perfil dos estudantes presentes nos cursos de maior prestígio.
