The aim of this study is to investigate how a group of people use music while studying, why they do it, and what perceived effects they get from it. The two main questions of the study were: What perceived effect does music have on the participants according to them? Does tempo have any effect on the participants? Six people were interviewed about their relation to music while studying, how it affected them and if they were listening to a specific genre. The study uses a socio-cultural theory perspective. Two themes emerged in the interview; In the first theme the informants used music as a tool to become motivated and listened to rock/pop with a high tempo. In the second theme the informants used music to relax and to become more focused while studying. The informants in this theme listened to classical/ambient music with a low tempo. The participants also talked about the downsides of music while studying and named specifically music with lyrics as a distraction.
