A. laevigata / There is a deep and widely known association among Attini ants and microorganisms. In this paper it was investigated the presence of various taxa of fungi related to the Attini leaf-cutter antAtta laevigata. Leafcutter ants were collected from inside the nests and foraging trails in two different localities (Rio Claro and Bauru), and they were washed in order to remove external microorganisms from their bodies. Leafcutters which have not been washed also were used. Ant DNA was extracted and purifiedand the fungal rRNA ITS region was amplified. PCR products were cloned and sequenced in order to identify fungal species based on the operationalmolecular taxonomic unit (MOTU) criteria. As a result, 50 fungal species were recognized; 20 of them were identified as casual contaminants and as 30 were found as symbionts more tightly adhered to ant body. Four out of these 30 symbionts (Cladosporium cladosporioids, Epicocum sp., Hypocrea virens and Nigrospora sp.) were identified in the two geographic localities and in large quantity. Thus, these are candidates to a more stable and functional symbionts of the ants. There were large quantity of the Trichosporon chiarelli and Coriolopsis rigida among the prospected ants. This paper shows the enhanced capacity of the ants to acquiring and transporting a varied of fungi and it is in an initial point to elucidate the role of fungi associated to the body ofA. laevigata / FAPESP: 11/04053-6
