Bilfritt Åre

Since World War Two, the car has been given a large place in society as well as in the urban planning. During many years, the development of driving has been discussed, primarily because of the vehicle ́s impact on the environment due to the carbon. Because of today’s situation, urban planning must include possibilities to reduce car usage to the extent necessary. Åre is a winter destination in the western part of Jämtland county with about 400 000 visitors every year. The number of cars is getting too big for the streets of Åre. This cause for instance congestion and pollution in most central parts in the village. To reduce emissions and increase the attractiveness, suggestions have been discussed since early 1980s. Today the central parts of Åre has still not been made car free and this thesis has conducted a study to this issue. The purpose of this essay is to find an appropriate strategy to enable parts of Åre car free. A qualitative study has been done in order to respond in best possible way to the issue of the thesis. A visit interview was conducted with the interviewee Ida Thuresson, planning and construction manager at Åre municipality. A phone interview was also made with Katrin Wissing with title as chairman of the planning board in the municipality of Åre. The results of this study show a connection between the resort’s parking problems and a car free Åre Centre. An opposition against a car free Åre is believed to be store owners in the central parts of the village, who are worried about reduced customer flow. One of the conclusions after conducting a case study on Åre and developing a strategy to enable parts of Åre car free, is that this action requires a higher priority in the planning if it is to be implemented within a reasonable future.
