The purpose of this study has been to research the method of which music students apply their knowledge of music theory when practicing music, and their beliefs how they most efficiently learn music theory, lastly how they want to be taught music theory. This study is of a qualitative nature and the method of choice has been focus group interviews with two separate groups of thirteen and seventeen music students. The results of this study shows that the student get to apply their knowledge of music theory when practicing their instrument, while performing individually and as a group. Their knowledge of music theory has also contributed to their oral skills. The result also shows that the most efficient way to learn music theory according to the participants is a combination of pen and paper work and the practice of music. Lastly the participants wants in their education of music theory summarizes into three categories; Materials, understanding and grouping, and integration of musical practice.
