Previous issue date: 20 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Em “É melhor prevenir do que curar”: a higiene e a saúde nas escolas públicas gaúchas (1893 – 1928), abordamos o tratamento dado pelos governantes gaúchos às questões relacionadas à saúde e à higiene nas escolas públicas primárias do Rio Grande do Sul entre os anos de 1893 e 1928. A análise das Introduções aos Relatórios da Secretaria de Estado dos Negócios do Interior e Exterior do Rio Grande do Sul, dos Relatórios da Higiene e da Instrução Pública – seções administrativas afetas à Secretaria do Interior e Exterior – e da Legislação do período revela que os governantes do RS – em sintonia com as discussões que vinham se dando no âmbito nacional – não deixaram de manifestar sua preocupação com os elevados índices de mortalidade e de criminalidade infantis. Considerando as posições políticas assumidas e as estratégias por eles adotadas para combatê-las, priorizamos as proposições que visavam garantir a salubridade do espaço escolar, o desenvolvimento saudável e a preservação do físico da população escolar, e a / “Preventing is better than curing”: Hygiene and Health in the Public Schools of the State of Rio Grande do Sul from 1893 to 1928 discusses the treatment given by the public officials of the state of Rio Grande do Sul to issues related to hygiene and health in the elementary schools in the period from 1893 to 1928. The analysis of the introductions to the reports of the state´s Department Of Internal and External Affairs, of the reports on Hygiene and Public Instruction – wich were administratively subjected to that Department – and of the legislation of the period reveals that the public officials of Rio Grande do Sul – in accordance with discussions that were being conducted at the national level – didn´t fail to express their concern with the high rates of infant mortality and criminality.
