Abstract Stereotypes are mental representations of for example people groups or places. It has been argued that stereotypes are used to classify for example individuals in to normal and deviant categories. One group in Sweden who are being associated with strong stereotypes and prejudice are individuals of a Muslim background. This study aims at understanding Swedish middle-aged men and woman’s images of Muslims. The overall resarchquestion which the study seeks to answer is; what are Swedish middle-aged men and woman’s images of Muslims? The research design of the study is of a qualitative nature. The method employed is phenomenological analysis. The data collection techniques employed in the study are interviews and projective techniques. The study’s findings indicate that the Swedish middle-aged men and woman’s images of Muslim are of a confirmatory nature. A typical stereotype of individuals of a Muslim background is, according to the respondents, that Muslims are dangerous and hold a female-hostile point of view. Furthermore, all of the respondents exhibit an ethnocentric way of thinking regarding Muslims. / Sammanfattning Stereotyper är mentala föreställningar om exempelvis människor, grupper eller ställen. Stereotyper klassificerar individer till kategorier, vilka som tillhör den normala eller avvikande kategorin. En grupp i Sverige som betraktas utifrån fördomar och stereotyper är människor med en muslimsk bakgrund. Undersökningens syfte är att undersöka medelålders svenskars män och kvinnors bilder av muslimer och studiens forskningsfråga är; Vilken bild av muslimer har svensk medelålders män och kvinnor om muslimer? Studiens design är av kvalitativ art och den valda metoden är en fenomenologisk analys. Datainsamling har skett genom intervjuer och projektiv teknik. Studiens resultat visar att svensk medelålders män och kvinnors bilder av muslimer är återbekräftande och stereotyper av muslimer är att de är farliga och har en negativ kvinnosyn. Vidare visar studiens resultat att respondenter har ett etnocentriskt tänkande.
