This study aims to explore how Swedish middle school teachers experience assessment of reading comprehension and reading fluency, and how they reflect on the concepts of reading comprehension and reading fluency. Seven teachers have shared their thoughts, reflections and experiences through semi-structured interviews. The results show that these teachers work to create a motivating and engaging environement, in which their studens can show their progress and also gain confidence in their reading skills. Assessment is obtained through a variety of methods, including both written and verbal respons from the students. The teachers describe how they use every-day classroom activities to gain information about their students progress, and also to give formative feedback to assure continuing progress. The results also show that the teachers value activities, for learning and for assessing, in which the students can work togehther in pairs or groups. There is a clear focus on reading strategies, and assessment is oftentimes made based on how student use these strategies in their responses or discussions.
