In this day's society the elderly live longer and they consume more alcohol than previous generations. That puts home care professionals in a situation where the work burden increases. And they meet more individuals with problems that they have no or little knowledge about. The purpose of this study is to describe and analyse the knowledge of how home care professionals identify and handle elderly with alcohol abuse. This was done by a vignette study with three different home care groups. That made it possible for us to see how home care professionals think and act in different situations. This study shows that home care professionals lack knowledge on how to identify alcohol abuse. They also don’t know how to handle alcohol abuse among the elderly. There is a lack of routines and coordination with other professionals. The home care professionals take the elder's self-determination into big consideration and that affects how they can handle alcohol abuse. We hope that this study will contribute to an increased awareness about the situation that home care professionals meet, and that this study will contribute to changing the situation. We also hope to be able to contribute knowledge about the topic.
