impact caused by the use of hearing aids in the elderly. Aiming at placing the
reader inside the universe of this research project, a literature review was
made, focusing the aging process, the hearing impairment and its implications
and the sound amplification usage. Method: The procedure used was the
gathering of the thematic verbal history in seven hearing impaired elderly
collaborators, all hearing aids wearers aging from 62 to 82 years old. The
results revealed that some of the collaborators had their hearing impairment
detected by a member of the family s suspicion, due to quarrels and
arguments, which arouse from the hearing disability in their environment.
Others realized their own difficulties in understanding other person s speech
and decided to look for adequate treatment. For the majority of them the
hearing aids have offered an improvement in their quality of life, leading to a
social play enjoyment. The family and friend s respect comes back when they
are wearing their hearing aids and it is precisely this respect that makes them
happier and more sociable persons. Conclusion: The negative impact provided
by the hearing aid usage tends to decrease as the elderly become satisfied
with what they are listening to and with life, which, gradually, becomes to be
what it was before the hearing impairment. The thematic verbal history
procedure can help the gathering of more information so that we can better
understand the hearing impairment psychosocial implications, bringing us the
possibility of identifying and solving problems in these fields, as they are
uttered / O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar, por meio de relatos orais, o impacto
proporcionado pelo uso de aparelho de amplificação sonora em idosos. Com o
intuito de situar o leitor a respeito do universo no qual esta pesquisa se insere, foi
efetuada uma revisão de literatura, com ênfase no processo de envelhecimento, na
deficiência auditiva e suas implicações e no uso da amplificação sonora. Método: Foi
empregado o procedimento da história oral temática, fazendo parte sete
colaboradores com idades entre 62 e 82 anos, portadores de deficiência auditiva
neurossensorial, usuários de aparelhos de amplificação sonora. Os resultados
revelaram que alguns colaboradores desta pesquisa tiveram sua deficiência auditiva
descoberta, inicialmente, por algum membro da família ou amigos, em virtude das
críticas e discussões que as dificuldades auditivas geravam em seu ambiente.
Outros perceberam suas próprias dificuldades para compreender o que as pessoas
falavam de decidiram procurar pelo tratamento adequado. Para a maioria deles, os
AAS proporcionaram melhora na qualidade de vida, levando-os a desfrutar
novamente do convívio social. O respeito da família e dos amigos retorna quando os
idosos estão com os aparelhos de amplificação sonora, e é justamente esse respeito
que faz deles, pessoas mais felizes e sociáveis. Conclusão: O impacto negativo
proporcionado pelo uso dos aparelhos de amplificação sonora tende a diminuir
quando os idosos estão satisfeitos com o que voltam a ouvir e com a vida que, aos
poucos, volta a ser o que era antes da deficiência auditiva. O procedimento da
história oral temática pode auxiliar na obtenção de mais informação, a fim de que
possamos melhor compreender as implicações psicossociais da deficiência auditiva,
trazendo-nos a possibilidade de identificar e solucionar os problemas nessas áreas,
na medida que são verbalizados
