This essay discusses the complex of problems relating to gender roles in correlationto the chosen novel The summer I turned Pretty written by Jenny Han. The essaycompares examples from the book based on different perspectives such asfemininity in comparison to masculinity, and how it consequently impacts theprotagonist in her actions and thoughts. Which also impacts her approach to therespective characters in the book. As a result of this the essay also discusses theimportance of looking at intersectionality in addition to the feminist perspective toinclude a wider perspective of social structures. Additionally, the result of theanalysis consists of an explanation that focuses on the feminine approach the bookexploits. It discusses how our view on femininity are focused on the male gaze andretails the details of the patriarchal structures we live after in the contemporarysociety. Due to this it also impacts the literary themes and trends such as thefeminine figure subjecting herself to the male gaze. Due to these themes and trendsthe essay demonstrates how women are obliged to follow the patriarchy andultimately shows how it can be highlighted in the chosen book.
