This is a thesis work in Information Design with a focus on informative illustration. The study is about highlighting specific areas on maps and whether illustrations can be designed to make it easier for users when they visit an exercise track. The study has been done in collaboration with Västerås city and examines the Rocklunda-Rönnby exercise track. The empirical material was collected using methods such as site analysis, interviews, usability testing and more. The study’s research question was answered with the help of the collected empirical data as well as selected theories from the fields of cognitive science, map design and information graphics as well as illustrative aspects such as colour and shapes. The objective of this study was to come up with a design proposal in the form of an information graphic that highlights certain risk areas and gives users a prior knowledge of the area. The hope is that the design proposal will be used for its intended purpose in Rocklunda-Rönnby. either in its entirety or specific elements of it.
