The present study aimed to investigate how teachers at SFI practice the instruction of learning strategies, and under what preconditions this subject is undertaken. The method used is qualitative and data has been collected through interviews of three teachers with experience of teaching at SFI. The result shows that the instruction can be organized either separately or integrated in the regular language instruction. The preconditions vary but are particularly influenced by the students' cultural and linguistic background, as well as their educational background. The teachers deem that many of the students, who mostly relies on translating, need to develop their skills and therefore strongly benefits from strategy instruction. Mostly their instruction is explicit and focuses, among other methods, on mind maps, summaries and guessing strategies.
