Previous issue date: 2013 / Resumo: Este trabalho parte do tema Religião e Surdez. Considerando a escassez de estudos que apresentem olhares dos próprios surdos e realcem o papel assumido por cada língua presente nos encontros com ouvintes, espera-se estabelecer discussões que se afastem das representações dos surdos como "deficientes" e atentem para as relações de poder existentes. Focaliza-se a participação desses grupos em um contexto religioso caracterizado pelo multilinguismo, no qual, inserem-se a escrita, a leitura e os conhecimentos matemáticos, embora estes últimos não sejam aqui destacados. Reconhecendo que mesmo fora da escola as pessoas envolvem-se com variados tipos de conhecimentos, acredita-se que tratar das práticas de letramento na igreja, com toda dificuldade teórico-metodológica que isso representa, é cada vez mais necessário e apropriado, especialmente porque, no que concerne à realidade brasileira e seus estudos, eventos religiosos geralmente são preteridos aos eventos escolares. Assim, percebendo o contexto religioso como lócus privilegiado para ensino-aprendizagem e para construção de identidades e territorialidades, investigam-se representações suscitadas e posicionamentos assumidos/contestados, principalmente diante das opções linguísticas realizadas nas práticas consideradas, utilizando como suporte as pistas interacionais de Wortham (2001). A pesquisa, de cunho etnográfico (ERICKSON, 1984; 1989), segue uma abordagem qualitativa e interpretativista, situa-se na Linguística Aplicada em sua vertente INdisciplinar (MOITA LOPES, 2006b) e Transgressiva (PENNYCOOK, 2006) e desenvolveu-se com um trabalho de campo realizado de maio/2011 a julho/2013, em uma paróquia católica de Campinas-SP, por meio de observação-participante da Pastoral dos Surdos que nela se abriga. O corpus para a análise - que surge desse processo - inclui notas de campo, conversas informais, entrevistas gravadas em áudio/vídeo, diário retrospectivo, considerando também trocas que se deram por meio de mensagens de e-mail, celular e em redes sociais como o Facebook e sites como o You Tube. A discussão teórica orienta-se por autores como Bauman (2003), Cavalcanti (2006), Cuche (2002), Haesbaert (2008), Hall (1997), Maher (2010a), Moita Lopes (2012), Perlin (2004), Santana (2007), Santos (2008), Silva (2007), Street (2012), Strobel (2008), Stumpf (2007), Woodward (2000) e, abrange conceitos como letramentos, comunidades, culturas, identidades, territorialidades, representações e posicionamentos. A análise indica que o contexto, pensado inicialmente para evangelização, também é utilizado para socialização e organização política. Nesse espaço, surdos e ouvintes posicionam-se e são posicionados hierarquicamente seguindo representações sobre suas manifestações linguísticas, resultando em diferentes formas de participação nas atividades e no acesso (ou não) a determinados territórios. Das diversas práticas de letramento, surge a necessidade de familiarização com diferentes línguas, com conhecimentos em torno da leitura e da escrita, mas também com o uso das novas tecnologias e com modos particulares de atuação na igreja, para serem considerados membros efetivos desse grupo. Conflitos internos não dissolvem a comunidade (que precisa se proteger de possíveis ameaças externas), mas permitem o afastamento provisório/definitivo de alguns de seus membros. Enfim, pode-se afirmar que, no contato com diferentes tipos de letramento, surdos e ouvintes forjam representações sobre o que eles são e sobre o que os outros podem ser, experimentando, refutando ou ratificando diferentes identidades e territorialidades / Abstract: This thesis focuses on Religion and Deafness. Taking into account that studies that either present the perspective of deaf individuals or highlight the role of each single language in meetings with hearing people are scarce, it aims at encouraging discussions which consider the existing power relations that determine how such meetings occur and at avoiding taking for granted representations of the deaf as "disabled". Thus the study investigates the participation of deaf individuals in religious events in a multilingual context where literacy practices take place. The study looks at the religious context as a privileged locus for the occurrence of learning and teaching processes as well as for the construction of identities and territorialities. The data analysis was based on Wortham?s Interactional Clues (2001) and aimed at investigating the construction of representations and the assumption/refusal of positionings regarding the linguistic occurrences within specific religious practices. Situated in a niche of Applied Linguistics conceived as both Non-disciplinary (MOITA LOPES, 2006b) and Transgressive (PENNYCOOK, 2006), this ethnographic research work (ERICKSON, 1984; 1989) was based on a qualitative and interpretive approach, The data were generated during fieldwork which occurred from May/2011 to July/2013 in a catholic parish in Campinas (São Paulo) where the researcher played a participant-observer role. The corpus consisted of fieldnotes, informal conversations, audio and video recorded interviews, retrospective journals written by the researcher, messages exchanged via e-mail, cell phones and social networks such as Facebook, and data from sites such as You Tube. The theoretical framework was based on studies carried out by Bauman (2003), Cavalcanti (2006), Cuche (2002), Haesbaert (2008), Hall (1997), Maher (2010a), Moita Lopes (2012), Perlin (2004), Santana (2007), Santos (2008), Silva (2007), Street (2012), Strobel (2008), Stumpf (2007) and Woodward (2000), and used the concepts of literacy, community, culture, identity, territoriality, representation and positioning. The data analysis showed that the religious context, which had the initial purpose of evangelization, was also used for socialization and political organization matters. Within these contexts, deaf and non-deaf individuals either position themselves or are positioned hierarchically following representations derived from their linguistic performances which point to different forms of participation in activities and different forms of access to territories. From the diverse literacy practices arise the need for familiarization either with different languages, different sorts of knowledge regarding reading and writing, different sorts of technology, or with specific manners of participation in church, in order for these individuals to achieve membership within the religious group. Internal conflicts within the group do not dissolve the community (that needs to protect itself from possible external threats) but might lead to temporary/definitive removal of its members. The data analysis indicates that while in contact with different sorts of literacy both deaf and non-deaf individuals forge representations of either what they are or what others can be; therefore, both of them experience, refute or ratify different identities and territorialities / Doutorado / Multiculturalismo, Plurilinguismo e Educação Bilingue / Doutora em Lingüística Aplicada
