Previous issue date: 2005 / Resumo: A determinação do gênero humano (sexo) é um dos objetivos principais dos peritos médico-Iegistas e odonto-Iegistas, quando responsáveis pelo exame antropológico de ossadas humanas. Dentre os ossos que podem ser analisados está a primeira costela, particularmente quanto ao seu tamanho. No presente estudo, mediu-se 100 (cem) primeiras costelas do lado direito, sendo 50 (cinqüenta) do gênero masculino e 50 (cinqüenta) do gênero feminino, com idade variando entre 18 e 101 anos, de ossadas inumadas no Cemitério Municipal de Rondonópolis - Mato Grosso - Brasil. Verificou-se seu tamanho com o uso de uma fita métrica flexível, tendo como ponto de referência a extremidade dorsal ou vertebral da primeira costela do lado direito e a extremidade ventral ou esternal da referida costela, medida essa realizada pela sua borda externa. Constatou-se que não há diferença significativa entre o comprimento da primeira costela no sexo feminino em relação ao comprimento da primeira costela no sexo masculino, com coeficiente de confiança de 95% / Abstract: The determination of human gender (sex) is one of the main objectives of forensic doctors and dentists, when they are responsible for the anthropological exam of human bones. Among the bones that can be analyzed there is the first rib, especially regarding its size. In this investigation, we measure the first hundred ribs at the right side, which are 50 (fifty) of male gender and 50 (fifty) of female gender aged between 18 and 101, of skeletons buried in the Municipal Cemetery of Rondonópolis, Mato Grosso, Brazil. We verify its size using a flexible tape measure and having as reference point the posterior and the anterior extremities of the first rib at the right side, which is measured by its external edge. We testify that there is no relevant difference concerning the length of the first female rib in re1ation to the length of the first male rib, with a confidence coefficient of 95% / Mestrado / Mestre em Odontologia Legal e Deontologia
