Previous issue date: 2013 / A presente dissertação investiga a presença da Língua Materna e da tradução no livro didático de língua inglesa, Upgrade. A motivação inicial foi a crença de que o uso da tradução e da língua materna pode ser eficaz para o ensino de línguas estrangeiras, mas são utilizados indiscriminadamente na sala de aula de ensino básico público; bem como pelo fato de ter notado a presença desses elementos nos livros didáticos de língua inglesa distribuídos pelo MEC (Ministério da Educação e Cultura) a partir de 2012, foi decidido pesquisar como a língua materna e a tradução aparecem no livro e se o livro poderia servir como um guia não apenas para mediar o ensino de língua estrangeira, mas também para mediar o uso da língua materna e da tradução em sala de aula. Com este estudo foi possível constatar que a LM (língua materna) e a tradução podem ser utilizadas para enriquecer o processo de ensino e aprendizagem se for usada moderadamente e de forma adequada, mas também pode atrapalhar o processo se o professor não souber em que situações pode e deve usá-la.<br> / Abstract : This thesis investigates the role of mother tongue and translation as a didactic resource in the English textbook called Upgrade. The initial motivation for its development was the belief that the use of translation and the mother tongue can be effective in the teaching of a foreign language, but that they are used indiscriminately at basic public school, and by the fact that I have noticed the presence of these elements in English textbooks distributed by MEC (Ministry of Education and Culture) in 2012, I decided to investigate how translation and the mother tongue appear in the book and the possibility of the book to serve as a guide, not only to mediate the foreign language teaching, but also to mediate the use of mother tongue and translation in the classroom. This study made it possible to verify that the mother tongue and translation can be used to enrich the teaching and learning process when it is used in the right amount and in an adequate way. But it also can make the process difficult if the teacher does not know in which situation he is allowed to use it.
