Bakgrund: Diabetes mellitus typ 1 är en autoimmun kronisk sjukdom som drabbar alltfler barn varje år. Cirka 1, 2 miljoner barn och ungdomar lever med sjukdomen i världen och det blir föräldrarnas ansvar att ta hand om barnet tills dess att de kan hantera sjukdomen själv. Syfte: Att belysa erfarenheter av att vara förälder till barn med diabetes mellitus typ 1. Metod: En litteraturstudie genomfördes baserad på åtta kvalitativa studier. Databassökning gjordes i CINAHL och PubMed. Analysen genomfördes utifrån Fribergs femstegsmodell. Resultat: Resultatet från analysen sammanställdes i tre kategorier: Omvälvande förändring, Påverkan på vardagen och Påverkan på relationer med totalt nio tillhörande subkategorier. Konklusion: Att vara förälder till ett barn med Diabetes mellitus typ 1 innebär en storförändring på föräldrarnas liv. Den omvälvande förändringen som föräldrar till ett barn med Diabetes mellitus typ 1 går igenom är av värdefull kunskap för all vårdpersonal som möter föräldrar till barn med diagnosen. Kunskapen kan hjälpa sjuksköterskor förberedaföräldrarna för den kommande förändringen. / Background: Diabetes mellitus type 1 is an autoimmune chronic disease that affects more and more children every year. Approximately 1, 2 million children and adolescents in the world live with the diagnose and it’s the parents’ responsibility to take care of the childuntil they can handle the disease themselves. Aim: To illuminate parents' experiences of having a child with diabetes mellitus type 1. Methods: A literature study was conducted based on eight qualitative studies. Database searches were done in CINAHL and PubMed. The analysis was based on Friberg's five-step model. Results: The results from the analysis were compiled into three main categories:Revolutionizing change, Impact on everyday life and Impact on relationships with a totalof nine associated sub- categories. Conclusion: Being a parent of a child with Diabetes mellitus type 1 implies a disruptive change in the parents' lives. The change that the parents of a child with Diabetes mellitus type 1 go through is of valuable knowledge for all healthcare professionals who meet parents of children with that diagnosis. This knowledge can help nurses prepare the parents for the coming change.
