Previous issue date: 2009 / Resumo: Diante da necessidade de se levar um escrito literário a sério, interpretamos o conto O Alienista [1882], de Machado de Assis, como expressão cômica em relação à prática psiquiátrica do século XIX, compreendida como um poder médico que domina a loucura, mesmo que não a conheça. Para tanto, em um primeiro momento, trata-se de analisar a tese História da Loucura [1961], de Michel Foucault, no concernente à subjetivação da loucura por meio da sujeição e do silenciamento do louco. A partir de uma historicidade nada convencional, ressaltada pela tese de Foucault, buscamos evidenciar o projeto moderno de silenciamento da loucura, consolidado pela psiquiatria positivista, a qual é precedida por uma experiência trágica da loucura no período renascentista e pela separação entre razão e desrazão, que desencadeou na internação clássica. Em um segundo momento, relacionamos essa leitura à economia interna do conto machadiano, destacando o projeto inverso, ficcional e crítico de silenciamento da razão médico-psiquiátrica. Diante da constatação ficcional de que o excesso de luz provoca a cegueira, ou seja, da patologia da razão médicopsiquiátrica, mencionamos, em um terceiro momento, a maneira pela qual a psiquiatria se constituiu como ciência médica no Brasil do século XIX. Dessa forma, ao perscrutar a economia externa d'O Alienista, por considerá-lo também como um escrito que ocupa um lugar em seu tempo e em sua cultura, buscamos compreender até que ponto o procedimento irônico do narrador machadiano possibilita com que seu universo ficcional seja interpretado como uma expressão crítica ante uma determinada realidade. Em outras palavras, sugerimos uma possibilidade interpretativa d'O Alienista a partir da análise histórico filosófica de História da Loucura, uma vez que ambos os escritos apontam, às suas distintas maneiras, a fragilidade epistemológica da psiquiatria, além da idéia de que a racionalidade a todo o custo é uma potência que compromete a vida. / Abstract: Given the need to take a literary writing seriously, we interpret the tale O Alienista [1882], by Machado de Assis, as comical expression in relation to psychiatric practice in the nineteenth century, understood as an medical power that dominates the madness, even if does not know it. Therefore, in a first moment, the Histoire de la folie à l'âge classique [1961] thesis by Michel Foucault is analysed concerning the subjectivation of the madness through the subjection and silenciamento (to become speechless) of the madman. From an unconventional historicity emphasized by the theory of Foucault, we highlight the modern project of the silenciamento of the madness, consolidated by the positivist psychiatry, which is preceded by a tragic experience of madness in the Renaissance period and by the separation between reason and unreason, which triggered the classical confinement. In a second moment, we relate this lecture to the internal economy of O Alienista, by Machado de Assis, highlighting the reverse, fictional and critical project of the silenciamento of the medical-psychiatric reason. In a third moment, given the fictional indication that the excess of light leads to blindness, which means the fictional indication of the pathology of the medical-psychiatric reason, we mention the way by which the psychiatry constitute itself as medical science in the nineteenth century in Brazil. Therefore, researching the external economy of O Alienista, considering it a writing that has a place in its time and in its culture, we try to understand until where the ironic procedure of the machadiano narrator allows that his fictional universe is interpreted as a critical expression in face of a determinate reality. In other words, from the historical-philosophical analyze of the Histoire de la folie à l'âge classique, we suggest one possible interpretation of O Alienista, given that both writings show, in their different ways, the epistemological fragility of the psychiatry and show that the rationality at all costs is a power that undermines the life. / Mestrado / Mestre em Sociologia
