This thesis consists of an examination of two separate episodes of investigative journalism. These two episodes are Dömda för våldtäkt produced by SVT1 and Slutstationen produced by TV4. Each episode was released during the early autumn of 2018 and received substantial criticism for their lack of responsible journalism and proper media ethics. This essay intends to thoroughly investigate each of these episodes in order to determine their ethical value and potential risks. In order to do so we examined several scientific outlooks on media ethics as well as the guidelines used by the separate media houses to conclusively summarise adequate characteristics of media ethics of which to examine the episodes by. In this essay we use theories by Stephen Ward, Torbjörn Von Krogh as well as Mats Ekström and Stig Arne Nohrstedt’s research on the subject. To analyse the episodes we have used a qualitative research method of critical examination as defined by Esaiasson et al. in order to summarise each episode’s ethical value and discuss if they follow the ethical guidelines or not. We discovered that each of the episodes were barely lacking in parts of the criteria, and the largest issue is regarding how much of a consequence ethics perspective that should be involved in a media ethics framework. This essay foremost presents an issue of intentions. Each episodes’ intention to produce critical journalism is greater than their use of proper media ethics which might discredit their journalism to a certain extent.
