Previous issue date: 1997 / Resumo: Este trabalho teve como objetivo contar a trajetória dos ribeirinhos das Comunidades Eclesiais de Base, na defesa do peixe no Amazonas e em especial nas cidades de Itapiranga e Silves no período de 1981 a julho de 1996. Moram às margens (ribeira) dos rios, igarapés, lagos, vivem do trabalho da roça e pescam para sobreviver. O peixe é sua "comida", seu alimento básico. Porém a partir de 1967 com a instalação da Zona Franca de Manaus, aumentou a população e com isto a procura pelo peixe. Os barcos pesqueiros cada vez em maior número, além de pescar estragavam esse produto, provocando a falta para os ribeirinhos. A partir desse fato os comunitários se propuseram a defender o peixe, para que não faltasse em suas mesas e na de todos os que moram no Amazonas. A trajetória dos ribeirinhos contada ao longo de 12 encontros mostra que foi necessária a união e conscientização de que o peixe estava diminuindo, e portanto era preciso defendê-lo e preservá-lo para não faltar. A preservação de lagos de manutenção e procriação, a nova lei da pesca, as Leis Municipais são algumas das conquistas dos ribeirinhos. O papel da Comissão Pastoral da Terra do Amazonas e Roraima (CPT AMIRR), das Prelazias e Dioceses foi decisivo neste movimento e suas conquistas. Com este trabalho pode-se concluir que a falta de peixe não se deve apenas ao estrago feito pelos barcos pesqueiros, mas também pela degradação ambiental, a pesca seletiva e à falta de apoio governamental ao setor pesqueiro. Palavras chaves: RIBEIRINHO, MEIO AMBIENTE, PESCA, COMUNIDADES ECLESIAIS DE BASE / Abstract: This work repports the way the people of the Comunidades de Base, the "ribeirinhos" who live along the rivers and lakes of the Amazon, specially in the towns of Itapiranga and Silves, tried to protect theirs fish from 1981 to july 1996. These people live along the rivers, igarapés and lakes. They grow plantations of subsistence and fish is their most important food, the basis of their nourishment. In 1967 was created the "zona Franca de Manaus" and this brought a growth of the population and a demand for more fish. The fishing boats, their number growing bigger and bigger, would come to fish. Their way of doing this caused a great waste of fish and the "ribeirinhos" weren't able to catch all the fish they needed. Seeing this the people that belonged to the Comunidades de Base determined to fight for their fish and that of all the people who live in the Amazon. As we can see, during the twelve meetings they had, they discovered the importance of getting together and of being aware that fish was begining to decrease and that it was important to protect and preserve it. Otherwise they would run short of it. Some of the conquests of the "ribeirinhos" were the preservation of the lakes for maintenance and procreation of fish, the new law about fishing and some laws made by the districts. The role the "Comissão Pastoral da Terra" from the Amazon and Roraima (CPI AMIRR), the "Prelazias" and the Dioceses played was determinant for their conquests. With the present research we can see that the shortage of fish isn't due on1y to the damage done by the fishing boats but also by the environment degradation, the selective fishing and the fact that the governement doesn't support the fishing activity as it should.
