Research questions: Overall research question; How is the undertaking of social sustainability organized, led and executed within the management of Västerås Municipality Government Administration. To answer the overall research question, a focus is on two sub-questions; How is social sustainability discussed at the leadership level in the city of Västerås? How is social sustainability integrated into the two committees? Purpose: The purpose of this study is to contribute to the body of knowledge of how working with social sustainable development is integrated within public administration organizations. Method: The starting point of the study is qualitative method, with thematic content analysis as a basis for a narrative presentation. Conclusion: Our conclusion is that social sustainability is a broad concept. There is a wide variation in knowledge among leaders and the ambition to work with these issues. The topic in itself is current and permeates large parts of the Västerås Municipality Government Administration both in terms of the work within the organization and towards civil society. Social sustainability recurs in different forums and on different levels. Social sustainability is observed on several areas, however, deficiencies can be discerned within certain domains. This means that the implementation of social sustainability needs to be given more space to maintain and strengthen the legitimacy of the organization. The essay's contribution: The study is an empirical contribution to the organization in terms of research in social sustainability a new institutional perspective / Frågeställningar: Övergripande forskningsfråga; Hur bedrivs, organiseras och leds arbetet med social hållbarhet på ledarnivå inom Västerås stad? För att besvara studiens övergripande forskningsfråga riktas ett fokus på två underfrågor; Hur diskuteras social hållbarhet på ledarnivå i Västerås stad? Hur integreras social hållbarhet sett utifrån de två nämnderna? Syfte: Syftet med denna studie är att bidra med kunskaper i hur social hållbar utveckling är integrerad i offentliga organisationer. Metod: Studien har utgått ifrån kvalitativ metod, där tematisk innehållsanalys har legat som grund med en narrativ framställning. Slutsats: Den slutsats som dras är att social hållbarhet är ett vitt begrepp som berör många olika områden. Det förekommer stor variation i kunskap hos ledarna samt vad gäller ambitionen att arbeta med frågorna. Social hållbarhet i sig är aktuell och genomsyrar stora delar av Västerås stads arbete både inom organisationen, men även sett ut mot samhällets invånare. Social hållbarhet återkommer i olika forum och på olika nivåer. Inom flera områden kan tydliga inslag av social hållbarhet ses, trots detta kan brister urskiljas inom vissa domäner. Detta gör att implementeringen av social hållbarhet behöver ges större utrymme för att bibehålla och förstärka legitimiteten i organisationen. Uppsatsens bidrag: Studien är ett empiriskt bidrag till organisationen vad gäller forskning om social hållbarhet sett utifrån ett nyinstitutionellt perspektiv.
