Esta dissertação busca caracterizar o discurso didático-expositivo acerca da variação linguística presente nos livros didáticos de língua portuguesa e literatura aprovados pelo Programa Nacional do Livro para o Ensino Médio de 2009. Nesse sentido, toma como corpus a totalidade dos livros aprovados naquele ano, propondo uma análise em duas etapas. A primeira etapa, de cunho quantitativo, busca nos sumários dos livros os capítulos e seções dedicados à variação e a temas relacionados, selecionando os trechos dos livros a serem lidos. Procede-se, então, à leitura dos capítulos selecionados, fazendo um levantamento dos temas relativos à variação abordados no discurso didático-expositivo dos livros didáticos. Como resultado dessa primeira etapa de abordagem dos livros didáticos, tem-se (1) uma lista de temas abordados e (2) sua distribuição nos livros didáticos. A segunda etapa de abordagem dos livros didáticos seleciona os dois livros mais adotados e os dois livros menos adotados para uma releitura dos capítulos dedicados a temas relacionados à variação, com o intuito de produzir uma análise do conteúdo do discurso didático-expositivo acerca do tema. Como resultado dessa segunda etapa de análise, encontram-se diferenças entre o discurso hegemônico (representado pelos livros mais adotados) e o discurso mais à margem (representado pelos livros menos adotados) acerca da variação linguística. O discurso hegemônico, apesar de admitir a variação linguística, parece reservar um espaço de invariabilidade na língua. Neste espaço de invariabilidade, coloca-se a norma padrão, que se apresenta como objeto de ensino. O discurso mais à margem, por outro lado, busca apresentar a língua como variável como um todo. Por fim, apresentamos algumas implicações de nossa análise dos livros didáticos para uma pedagogia da variação linguística. / This paper seeks to characterize the discourse regarding linguistic variation, found in textbooks of Brazilian Portuguese language and literature aproved by the National Program of Books for High School of 2009. It takes all books aproved that year as corpus, proposing an analysis in two steps. In the first step of analysis, which has a quantitative nature, we read the table of contents of each book in search of chapters and sections dedicated to linguistic variation and related subjects, making a first selection of what would be read in full. Then, we read the selected chapters, making a list of the subjects related to variation that were discussed in each books’ didatic and expository text. As a result of this first step of the analysis, we came up with (1) a list of subjects that are discussed by textbooks, and (2) their distribution in the same books. In the second step of analysis, we chose the two most adopted books and the two least adopted books to be read again, focusing on analysing the content of the didatic and expository text on linguistic variation. As a result of this second step of analysis, we found differences between the hegemonic discourse (in the two most adopted textbooks) and the marginal discourse (in the two least adopted textbooks) on linguistic variation. The hegemonic discourse, although admitting the existence of linguistic variation, seemed to suppose a part of language which would not be subject to variation. In this part, we could find the standard language, which is presented then as object of study by the textbook. The marginal discourse, on the other hand, seemed to present the language as variable as a whole. Finally, we present a few implications of our analysis of the textbooks to a language variation pedagogy.
