Previous issue date: 2015-03-23 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Cient?fico e Tecnol?gico - CNPq / During the cycle of life of organisms, the food intake is crucial to maintenance and anticipation of biological events. One of the major events in terms of metabolic costs is reproduction. Indicators of oxidative status may become important tools in conservation biology, in order to evaluate survival and reproduction expectations on organisms, as well as to elucidate the effects of anthropic impacts among populations in their natural environment. Tropidurus catalanensis it is a dark-colored and medium size lizard that can be found in rocky outcrops, and has a day-light habit and territorial behavior. It?s reproductive period goes to September from January, with males defending its harem and females tend to be more sedentary. The objective of the present study was to analyze seasonal variations of the intermediate metabolism, body index and biomarkers of the oxidative status of males and females from a population of Tropidurus catalanensis from Pampa biome, which occurs in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. The study was developed in a farm located in the city of Alegrete, RS. The study lasted one year, and it was collected 73 animals by active search and manual capture. It was measured the snout-vent-length (SVL), the body weight and it was taken blood samples by cardiac puncture with heparinized syringes. It was analyzed total proteins, uric acid, glucose, total lipids, triglycerides, total cholesterol and VLDL cholesterol of the blood plasma. On the liver, it was analyzed the levels of total proteins, glycogen, total lipids and triglycerides. On the liver, kidneys and muscle tissue from the lizard?s tale it was analyzes the levels of lipid peroxidation (TBARS) and the activities of the following antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST). It was also measured the hepatosomatic and gonadosomatic index, as well as the abdominal fat. The present results indicate that this lizard has a clear pattern of seasonal variation on its metabolism, its oxidative stress biomarkers and its body indexes. The winter period seems to induce a hypometabolic state mainly in males, and the reproductive period seems to be the biological event that requires the largest energetic demands, especially in females. These costs caused by reproduction may increase the vulnerability of the species to any environmental disturbance. Thus, the present study can be considered important on the description and understanding of the effects of the seasonality on the intermediate metabolism and oxidative status of free-living lizards, providing resources for the conservation of herpetofauna.
