Previous issue date: 2011-10-31 / Introduction: To determine whether a correlation between water absorption and diametral tensile strength (DTS) exists, two orthodontic adhesives - one of hydrophilic (Transbond Plus Color Change), and other of hydrophobic nature (Transbond XT) - were tested. Methods: Samples were divided into 4 groups (n = 10 each) according to the variables cement type and storage condition (Group I, XT dry; Group II, XT wet; Group III, Plus dry; and Group IV, Plus wet). After measuring and weighting, samples from groups I and III were kept dry, while those from groups II and IV were immersed in distilled water for 72 h. Then, all samples were stored at 37?C for 72 h, re-weighted and re-measured. Statistical analyses assessed significant differences among the groups. Results: Water absorption was significantly higher in group IV when compared to group II (p = 0.004). As for DTS, group IV values were significantly lower than those obtained from the other groups. A significant correlation between water absorption and diametrical tensile could not be demonstrated. Conclusion: Our results suggest that Transbond Plus Color Change samples, after immersion in distilled water, absorbs more water and has lower DTS values than those obtained from wet and dry Transbond XT samples. Grupo I (controle): XT seco. Grupo II: XT ?mido. Grupo III (controle): Plus seco. Grupo IV: Plus ?mido.
